limit of hash functions?

I'm sure there is a thread I can't find (link it please), but what is the limit on sha 256 and scrypt? 
There has to be a point of diminishing returns where a mining rig will not get outdated, or be only slightly less efficient (excluding the difficulty increases)
Unless it doesn't work that way.
