Best Way to Carry Your Seed When Traveling Or Moving Abroad?

So I'm from the US.  But i travel quite a bit and am outside the US majority of the time.  My seed is stored online.   I do have my hardware wallet nano ledger s with me though.  Now I didn't want to bring my seed with me when traveling because well imagine something happens at customs and my bags get searched... well what if customs search through my stuff and then see a paper with my seed.  And of course there is a chance they know what it is and can write it down etc.  I heard many examples of those workers stealing from luggage, so imagine a search and then they see piece of paper and its words and they know what crypto is.  But that is rare of course.  




But when i travel abroad, I don't want to have my seed in the apartment as I don't think that is safe.  Where im located, there is lot of breakins... thats how it is here.  Thief would take electronics and wallet etc.  Doesn't matter what neighborhood you are in... its like this here and very common.  So people that say move... well most places are like this.  Even places that has security.  And because of this, i left my seed back in the US.  I mean look even in those rich places in california, you have breakins etc.




Now what I'm curious is for those of you who travel or move... how do you bring your seed with you?  Obviously if you are moving to somewhere else in the same state, well you can drive there with it so no big deal.  But what if you are traveling from say florida to los angeles?  Or florida all the way to canada or europe?  I mean having the seed with you written on a piece of paper when traveling when flying got to make you all nervous right?

A good way to safely store the seed is to memorize English words.  Seed can be stored in your head.  On the other hand, there is a chance to forget these 12 words and it will be a disaster. 

The main risks are that your laptop or smartphone could be stolen.  At the border, it is possible to inspect your devices with the assistance of technical specialists.  If the survey is carried out by IT specialists, the seeds will (probably) be found easily.  Hence, based on this, a very powerful protection for your device is required. 

I think you should consult with the appropriate cybersecurity experts.  The cost of a mistake is too great.

To be honest, the safest place to store seeds is a safe deposit box in a bank, because I keep my seed there along with other securities.
But if we travel frequently it is difficult too, especially going abroad. In my opinion, the most effective way is to store it online, even though
the risk is quite large. I usually save part of it in email and save part of it in the notes on my smartphone. So far it is safe and has never
been hacked, maybe those of you who often travel can try the solution I did.

How many safety deposit boxes do you use and you break the seed into two pieces right?  The thing is if you only have two banks with two deposit boxes... well what if theft/fire or something happens to one of them?  So wouldn't it make sense to have four safety deposit banks with two copies each and two pieces broken to make it safe?

You should be using encryption, particularly if you store a copy of your seed online. That way, theft of your seed won't automatically result in loss of your bitcoins.

You could type your seed in a plain text document, then encrypt it with password protection. You could also physically store your seed words in a way -- or in multiple parts -- where only you would be able to recognize and reconstruct them. If you leave them written down as a 12-word seed, there's a decent chance someone will recognize them as such.

Having multiple encrypted digital copies solves all issues. Just make sure to a create a system where you'll never forget or lose your encryption key.

I mentioned how i would put it in lastpass/keepass... then put it in the cloud ... dropbox/gmail... so if someone were to hack my email... they still need to know what is my lastpass/keepass password.  So isn't that good enough?


Of course the big issue here is if you get malware/virus/keylogger on your computer, then you are screwed then right especially keylogging?  Because that person could see everytime you type in when you enter your lastpass/keepass and email password?  Thus they could just log into it anytime they want and you wouldn't know?

If it is about hardware, yeah it may be a dilemma when you want to carry them out but it is too risky to do that. if there is a safe deposit box, it is the best way. Or, if you have your family and you trust them, you can also put it to them. However, if it is in your apartment, will be there a theft. You may also put it in your house or apartment but inside a very safe box with an advanced key. It may be also good to leave them there.  So here, I will be also very worried if something happens when carrying that with us around the traveling.

Well, it is always good if you will carry your seed while on travel is on physical just like writing it down in a piece of wood or even in plastic that no one suspected that is a seed of cryptocurrency. I don't trust keeping my seed online or in a cloud, there are too many instances that could be happened while your seed is online. Make multiple copies and keep them in your wallet that you always carry wherever you are. The best is, be responsible enough for all your belongings safe wherever you are and you are totally safe.

We did that playing spies ,and later sending love letters . You simply write with lemon juice. When you want to read it , heat the page .

I use a hardware wallet for my cryptos. I also carry passphrase or seed in the paper while traveling. I don't write as it is. I always shuffle some words that I can always remember so that If someone has access to my passphrase they can not access my wallet. Be Smart.

The best way to make sure that your seed is safe is to leave it on a safety bank. You can also split your seed then leave it on a two different safety bank. If the bank you left your seed is said legit then you don't need to worry and you can continue what you are doing but if you manage to put it on unnamed bank then it is a bad idea. We really need to socialize with each other so that we can know if the bank we are leaving our seeds are legit or not. If we manage to do this kind of work individually, we cannot survive until the end but if we manage to help each other then we can make the community better and achieve what all of us are dreaming for this community. In this kind of work, we need to give informations and take informations.

Custom seed - I picked up a public domain book and my feed is the X word from page Y, X+1 & Y+1, etc. Thus my seed is always online, always accessible through the internet and yet always hidden.

Now that you've made your setup public, anyone familiar with you in person and enough incentive will be able to figure it out and find your seed and steal your coins.

IMO this is even harder than just brute-force combining every the possible allowed word in the dictionary. There are millions of free public domain books online (https://lifehacker.com/access-millions-of-free-books-added-to-the-public-domai-1837073153, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain).

What about using a favourite book which you can carry with you or buy a copy if needs be?

Storing your "Seed" online is a huge risk, if you do not know what you are doing. The best method to do this is not to store all the seed words on one platform. Try to break it up into pieces for example : Put the first 3 words in a webmail account as a encrypted attachments to a email and then put the next 3 words in a Cloud storage platform within a encrypted file and the last 3 words, you can keep in your physical wallet. (on a piece of paper that are laminated or written on the back of a business card.)

Nobody will be able to assemble the 12 words in order, if you break it up into different pieces and store it in different places. (Tip : Make sure you store the whole seed with one of your trusted family members, if something happens to you)

What do you mean by storing your seed online ? You're getting my pulse racing ! To me that's where a seed should never be. It should be in a safe, physical place.

For traveling, I could see several options. For example having the words in several chunks, one bit in your wallet (the one with the fiat I mean), one bit as an encrypted file on your smartphone, one bit on an encrypted file on a USB key.

But to be honest a hardware wallet is enough for me, I don't really envision the need to have my seed always with me.

I have some ideas for OP why not print it on your underwear that you would wear on the flight,
Print an encrypted message on a tumbler and always hold it and make sure you wouldn't lose it.
I also am curious why you need the seed when you are traveling when you already have the hard ware wallet? OP you should just make sure that the seed is safe at your home.

So is! it is important to have safe seeds in various places in the home. I would have several copies and not explicitly as preventive measures if one is lost.
If I am going to travel I would keep the camouflaged seed in my travel books. Although the safest thing is that I have the funds for the trip in crypyo and Fiat in another wallet either in a P2P exchange and always keeping my wallet in a safe place at home.
I am also a bit jealous and discreet with my portfolios.

I was suppose to suggest the same thing on where breaking up to several parts of your entire seed.Its impossible for someone to find out that those words are part of a seed.

Placing it randomly neither back of your id, and smartphone notes or stickies or even on cloud storages will really be enough.Just be sure that you wont forget a piece of it

or else you would really be fucked up and let those coins lost forever in the void.It is just a matter on how you do creatively separate and putting them back without letting others know.

Saving it in your memory may sound good but as a member pointed out here, when you are at a gun point or threatened, you might give it out even if you don't want to.
And also, there is a possibility of forgetting it, I have seen it happen (I am an example).

However, have you thought of camouflaging it within written words? It may sound so simple, but many people might not know that this can be the best way cause a thief won't even imagine it to be so.

I only use 2 deposit boxes, it's true that if something happens to one of the deposit boxes it will be a problem. Therefore I do have to have a copy,
but using 4 deposit boxes for me wastes too much money. I keep a copy in a part of my house, which I consider the safest. But I only keep part of
the seed, partly I save it in a notebook on my smartphone. That way it is safe enough for me.

Why not tattoo it on your body?  Name the third word after your pet and tattoo the others on your body. Your thigh will be a nice spot for that.

It's tantamount to carrying the seed with you everywhere, especially if the pet's name isn't on the word list. Even if it is, theoretically if someone could strip search you and knew what they were doing, they could feasibly check all combinations of one word being changed (24*2048) to rule out your scheme.

I have no idea but does airport authorities search even the inside of your shoes? If not, you can write it on a piece of paper and put it there or inside your socks, phone case is also good to hide that paper. Then to make sure they won't be able to access it even if they search through all your things, remove the last 3 words of it and memorize it on your mind. If you're afraid you will forget it, you can print those 3 words on t-shirt or anything that you use daily.

I can't even imagine why all of you want to put it in a safe vault box. Did you know that it even adds in you luggage maximum weighs. We are living in the new technology where all things are possible. I can say that we can safely store our private keys on the internet. Just on your lsptop download some sruff that keeps password with a password. For me this is one of the effective ways because I even experience it. And just to make sure make a copy or backup in your own house. I know that this may be at risk but for me it is so much risky when you carry it with you in travelling in a vault or piece of paper.
