politics is not done by how much tax a business has put into treasury to then have a bigger share of say over proposals. but instead how much money they secretly pay to legislators as bribes to get their say.

this is why when voting in a electee, voters want to know how corrupt a person is to know how risky it is to put them in a seat where they could actually be bribed into doing things that benefit companies that dont pay tax. while simultaneously hurting normal people/voters that do pay tax.

a solution should have been made in the 19th century to outlaw any bribery 'donations'. to make it so a business can only lobby for proposals if that company has fairly paid its taxes. .. but this has not happened. hense the need to background check electee's morals and life to work out how corruptible they are

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER.
Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

The potential rewards of winning, in terms of money and power, are so huge that people will go to extraordinary lengths in order to win. Politics will always attract people with a win-at-all-costs mentality, and will always attract people who have no actual ideological stance and no motivation beyond self-advancement and making $$$.
Of course there are also a number of genuine idealists attracted, who want to change the world. Some remain idealists, others either leave or slowly fall prey to the endemic corruption.

I've often thought that countries would be governed better if the first rule was that the people in charge have to be those who don't want to be in charge.

In one word: 'secrecy'.

If the peeps insisted upon complete transparency of everyone and everything involve with 'governance' (including contractors who get paid from the government's coffers) then we'd have 'clean' government.  And technology is such that it is completely practical to do.  Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Note that there is nothing 'un-free' about government service workers opening up their books and lives to the public.  Nor is there with contractors.  If a person cannot handle scrutiny than they are perfectly free to choose the private sector.  If a contractor cannot handle the scrutiny, they are perfectly free to bid only in the private sector.

Technology is at a state now where it would be possible to do brain scans and tell whether an elected official actually cares more about the U.S. then he/she does about some another nation or project.  It would be great if such tests were mandated for all elected officials.  Again, they are 100% free to make other career decisions (or make aliyah) if they don't like it.

Why is politics so dirty? Becuase there is a massive amount of power on the line which causes people to do whatever must be done to get, keep, and continue to retain the power that they get.

Once you win public office, you begin to notice that the power is amazing. Think of someone like Nixon, I highly doubt when Nixon first got involved in politics that he was a horrible person (haven’t read into him though, so I have no idea about his early life) - but as time went on Nixon become dirtier and dirtier and then we get to the point where he’s having the DNC raided into.

When an insane amount of power is on the line, people will stop at nothing to continue to have it. It’s Machiavellian, but that’s where we’re at now.

...
Once you win public office, you begin to notice that the power is amazing.   ...

I doubt that it holds a candle to the feeling of power one achieves by controlling entire nations and civilizations with a minor tweak to an algorithm.

My read of most people in 'public office' is that they are chronically frustrated at the LACK of real power.  Everything is a compromise and every action has potentially worse reactions.  By-n-large the 'elected leaders' play the role of the plastic targets we used to shoot at when I was in the military.  (They had a red star on their plastic helmets when I was in.)  They go down when hit, but when some unseen range controller pushes at button they pop back up again with one more hole in them.

The powers of this world are vested in some many places of which, politics is one of the major one as it awards you some power within the sovereign body for which one finds himself. Power they say is given to those who wants it the least but, in politics, this is very much not the case. Power in politics doesn't consider a persons character, it's often about loyalty and what your cabinet will stand to gain. For this, you go any length or your cabinet does that for you to ensure they get these benefits.

Power is capable of corrupting the best of persons and as such, it takes one of strong-will to go through it's huddles unbroken. It's always going to be a dirty game. Even video games have got trials so, if politics is a game, why won't it have tricks about it!
It's just sad that this game is how the future of a nation and it's citizens are decided.

If you can't convince people with your real agenda that you are going for cheap shots. It's easier to make your oppenent look bad that producing your own ideas. Also the problem with having a real agenda  means that people are going to judge you based on it. It's better for politicans to just muddle through the business and jump from crisis to crisis instead of working on long term plans. Another issue with having a real plan is that it might take years to notice the difference and will be hard for people to understand.
