Alright fellas, listen to this little advice of mine, if you want to do anything crypto practical is a necessity to understand some things, I will just like to warn you to never allow anyone to help you download and open a crypto wallet for you, here is my story

When I was still very new to crypto I find it very hard to do things myself so I look for a friend of a friend living in my hood to help me open a crypto wallet, after buying few bitcoins my coins have vanished twice... Later I detect that the wallet was already compromised the moment I allowed someone to open it for me

Even when I told him what happened I instantly noticed he knew, so I was free when I finally abandoned the wallet for new one...hope you guys learned from my mistake

The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

Thst is why it is good to be just independently operating wallets, if someone has the seed phrase, it means it is no longer your coin alone because both of you can acessed the cryptocurrencies on the wallet. If the person send the coin to another wallet, that means it is completely no longer yours. The person will also just be taking you for fool, open wallet for you and move the funds into his own wallet. No one should know your seed phrase, supposing you open the wallet yourself, or pay attention to the instruction about the seed phrase, the wallet would have stated that the seed phrase should be backup, if anyone knows the backup, that means the coin can be stolen by the person, this is what you will want to avoid.

I wouldn't go as far as not asking for help, it's just that I'd definitely be extremely picky on picking who's going to help me.

As for your lost funds, that's unfortunate. How sure are you that it was the "friend of a friend" that was the cause of all this though? Which specific step did you felt skeptical? Did he take a peek at the 12-24 word seed? Because depending on the circumstances, there's also the chance that your wallet simply just got compromised by hackers one way or another on your device.

Bitcoin is open sourced and there are even many good sites or channels, books, forum (like this one) can help you with basics to advanced questions.

Sacrifice your security by giving your computer control (then your wallet control) on the others is the worst thing to do. Never should do this.

Example is using TeamViewer when you need help from friends or strangers. I would not go with this sacrifice.

Some sources if you still need them

Letting someone open your wallet is like allowing someone to go through your wallet and bank account. It was never a good idea to let you open even with details anyone for it. You haven't also activated a 2FA for your wallet which is vital because even if someone opens it, he needs the code for the 2FA before he/she sends it to his own wallet address. But if you have learned from that mistake, it is what it is, and thank you for making that post because some people might be doing this or planning to do this and trusting their friends for it.

Somehow the so called fake friend managed to safe your recovery seed either through taking a snap or storing the words off head, yeah some people are that smart, this type of friend can do harm to anyone I would advise to stay away completely from such person, thanks for sharing

Never trust anyone about your crypto wallet, even family members I selectively trust those super close with me.  A friend of your friend isn't good to trust them because when we talk about valuable stuff, sometimes a good person turns into an evil one.  So treat your crypto asset as real money, because it is valuable for anyone who have.

In fact, you can learn on your own and don't rely upon other knowledge, storing Bitcoin and how it will work is very easy and it might take a week for you to study it.  I hope your new wallet now didn't expose to other person and learn how to have a strong password and how to keep your private key safe.  These links below might help you to store your Bitcoin safe and I recommend using Electrum and how to verify and stall it.

So where does the origin of the problem really reside? (the friend of a friend not being trustworthy, and may have ripped you off, or the wallet you used/site you downloaded it from).

If you want, you can name the wallet and the site you got it from, so others can chime-in and give their opinion. If you post the site, better make sure its link is not clickable here (i.e. put it in a code block or change the dots for [dot] – just in case it leads somewhere dodgy).

Sorry to say but that is so dumb of you OP, honestly this is a good advice because many newbie can easily do the same thing, in my country when people don't know something it's easier for them to go out and meet others to teach them instantly, anyways I'm sure you've learned a good lesson here and I hope this will get to some newbies too before they make such mistake

It's just normal to ask for help if you are in desperate needs but you should choose who you trust to help you especially when handling investment and money. Avoid those people who will suddenly turn against you someday because they won't gain something from you that's an awful behavior for a person.

Luckily, I have a friend who's in crypto market for too long who helped me with everything in crypto from wallet to trading and handling the transaction etc. Like he taught me almost everything because I'm in need that's why and without asking some money in return. You should have a friend like that, OP.

I'm sorry to hear this. Unfortunately, you can't really trust someone in crypto sphere, even this so called "friend" of yours. He may have set up for you, but he/she knows the seeds/private key and just totally watching it from behind and seeing how much bitcoin you have.

Not to rub it in, but if you wanted to enter crypto, there is a learning curve and you really have to go down this path to really know everything works. But at least you have learn your lessons, specially with regards to "trust".

It was a newbie's mistake. A very trusting person and thought his friend will not do something like that and now he learned his lesson.

I wouldn't do it myself even if I'm a newbie because I know when it comes to money a person can change from good to worse when it comes to money. I have experienced this myself seeing someone I knew that with a very small amount, a friend can become a foe risking a friendship built for years.

I think it is much better OP if you drop the name of the wallet you got scammed? It can help some people especially newbies to avoid that kind of wallet (if ever the wallet is still available).

Yeah, sometimes, we need to be more patient in learning and we can watch tutorials. Nowadays, there are so many tutorials in YouTUbe and other sources in order to use certain wallets.
And trusting a friend to help is a big mistake. haha
But, glad to see now you are aware of it. basically, I personally trust only one person who is really close to me, yeah my couple in marriage. We manage it together.
But if you are not really, sure enough, it is better to keep it by yourself because private keys and other data may be your own secret for the sake of your security.

If this friend of a friend intention to help you was genuine, then he would've shown you the steps to create the wallet by yourself and he would've taught you how to secure your funds.
If I were you, I wouldn't confront him unless I gather enough proofs to link him to the address to which the coins were sent. But what is done is done now and all I can hope is that newbies learn the lesson from your experience and don't make the same mistake.

For sure, when your friend created the wallet for you, he have kept the private key with himself as well and when he notices that you have funds in your wallet he have withdrawn it to your own wallet. If anyone have your private keys, then your funds are not save. Its good to take help from your friends but never let them get hold of your wallet. It good that you realize what's going on and you got save from losing big money in future.

Ive had a friend create crypto wallet for me but my coins aren't lost, that fella shouldn't be called a friend because he isn't, I used the wallet for months before going for trust wallet, you should be thankful that you knew what's going on cos some just buy coins and locked it in their wallets for long period of time without looking back

Even when I told him what happened I instantly noticed he knew, so I was free when I finally abandoned the wallet for new one...hope you guys learned from my mistake
if that person is your friend I think it's about time to forget about your friendship, he does not trustworthy, it is correct to not let others know your wallet keys, but for an instance, you should have at least one person who is trusted because sooner or later you're gonna need them, although it is not recommended I let my friend open my wallet, well there is a reason that I can trust him his portfolio is 20x bigger than mine, and I let him because its an emergency, people really change for money if someone, can be trusted that person is worth a bitcoin.
