Hello all. Finally got my to wallets and i am 98% finished syncing with bitcoin core full node. One wallet is 1.3mb in size and the other is 900kb. My question is, should there not show some transactions in wallet one allready, even though bitcoin core is 98% synced? also when my wallet is at 1.3mb, it should not show as empty.
thanks
Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

when my wallet is at 1.3mb, it should not show as empty.
Have you transacted with these wallets in the past, and were there funds left in them?
The size of a wallet file is not only determined by transactions or inputs, the number of addresses also adds to it, as well as some other factors. So, a certain size amount does not explicitly indicate that there are coins in the address.

Hello all. Finally got my to wallets and i am 98% finished syncing with bitcoin core full node.
If the wallet sync is 98% there's the chance for it to show wallet balance but if you're not using the wallet to mine there's no reason for you to run the full node.

One wallet is 1.3mb in size and the other is 900kb.
There's no way for a full node wallet that's 98% sync to be 1.3MB or 900kb in size and running a full node wallet requires a minimum of 145 gigabytes of disk space.

My question is, should there not show some transactions in wallet one allready, even though bitcoin core is 98% synced? also when my wallet is at 1.3mb, it should not show as empty.
thanks
A wallet Bitcoin core full node wallet which is 1.3MB is not 98% sync and it won't update the wallet balance.

Minimum 2GB if you prune it. ~ 370GB without.
A wallet Bitcoin core full node wallet which is 1.3MB is not 98% sync and it won't update the wallet balance.
OP is talking about the wallet.dat file.

OP, the space occupied by the wallet.dat file is not an accurate representation of the number of transactions stored within. The size can be due to miscellaneous data being stored within. For reference, my empty wallet.dat occupies about 1392KB as well. If you want to be sure, just make sure you've loaded the correct wallet.dat and try to rescan again.

It's hard to tell just by the wallet.dat's size but surely, the "900kB" wallet is from an old version since newer ones are preloaded with thousands of key pairs making the initial size at least 1.3-1.4MB.

But if those wallets were used before, they should at least have "unknown" transactions in the history once loaded.
Also, it's already 98% sync and there are no transactions found, that's not a good sign for the currently loaded wallet.dat.

If you finished syncing and there's no balance, try to rescan the blockchain after opening both wallets (File->Open Wallet).
The command is rescanblockchain (RPC command usage link), that process will be slow but not as slow as downloading the Blockchain.

how old version of your wallet.dat file ? Bitcoin-Qt or new updated versions?

if you use old wallet.dat file your wallet size 1.34 will show less than 300 TX. spam wallet can have size up to 400MB (faucets) but this does not mean you will have too many bitcoins.

you can try -zapwallettxes
why not rescan your wallet or dump your private keys?

- When were these wallet.dat's created?
- When were the previous transactions that you expect to show up sent or received?
- Do you know of any wallet addresses/transaction ID's from the previous transactions?

If the wallet gets to 100% synced and there is nothing to show, then the wallet's are most likely empty and you have restored an empty wallet... wrong backup file? Huh

Bitcoin Core syncs (fetches blocks) linearly starting with the earliest block, so if all of your transactions in the wallet were made after the block that is currently being processed (and the sync dialog box will tell you how many months the blockchain copy it has is behind) then you won't see any transactions in it.

By now your node should be 100% synchronized, so tell us, is the wallet still empty or do you see transactions in it now?

thanks alot for the intel, and srry for late respons.
The bitcoinCore still says 14 hours, but it's not the fastest pc i'm using ( AMD Athlon 11 x3 440 processor ) to only sync the entire blockchain, and soo far i have downloaded 346GB blocks. I am not so high tech with this, but the wallet has been on my harddrive since 2012. I will try the dump wallet function and install Python to see if it helps. Totally forgot about the wallet and what i used it for back then, but did not want to delete it, until i find out why it's there, and if it's bitcoin or what's on it.

Did you find it in a folder on your old drive called "Bitcoin" or was it just a wallet.dat in a "random" directory? Huh Given the age of the wallet files, and how much of the blockchain you've already synced, then it is likely that the wallets are either empty, ot it is also possible that they are wallet.dat's from one of the many altcoins that cloned Bitcoin Core/BitcoinQt (like Dogecoin, Litecoin etc).

If you make a copy of the wallet.dat's and open the copy in a text editor... (I would recommend Notepad++) and then do a text search for: name

In amongst all the weird looking symbols, you should hopefully find some "name" records that look like cryptocurrency addresses... like this example:

Do they start with a "1" or another character? Huh In the example above, it starts with a "D" because it was a Dogecoin wallet.dat

Hi again, and thanks for patience. I did a full node/download with Bitcoin Core, and it showed up empty in the main screen. I did a search with Notepad++ and it says "found 6 entries" which looks like the screenshot you provided. It shows "NUL SOH EOT name*bc1q6xxxxxxx" with a total of 42 digits. I did a quick search on blockchain.info and i showed nothing thinking it was a transaction address. Any suggestions on what to do from here?

It shows "NUL SOH EOT name*bc1q6xxxxxxx" with a total of 42 digits.
This is a bech32 address.
Please correct me if am wrong, but bech32 was first introduced in 2017. Therefore, the wallet file to which this address belongs can't be from 2012!

Are you sure you imported the right wallet.dat file?

i will scan the harddrive again and look, but what about the data i have provided mean or tell you?, can it be from an Electrum wallet, or is it bitcoin. I am not so tech, and have played around with a few crypto things a few years ago, or during the years. I know that from 2018, i have only been using Coinbase wallet and Blockchain dot com, as it is the easiest for me to use.

any futher info on how i should proceed with this wallet. I have read up some, but it only get more confusing, something with decoding. Is it more difficult with bech32. That is why i went over to coinbase and blockchain dot com - easier for the standard guy. If there are any link i maybe also can (try) to read up on, it would help to post :-)
thanks

How did you know that you have 2 wallets? Is it two wallet.dat?

I suggest you if you have two wallet.dat replace the current wallet.dat file on the Bitcoin core data folder if you don't know the location you can check this link below.

Once you found the wallet.dat on that folder location backup or move it to another folder and place it with another wallet.dat since you said above that it does not have a balance after synced it means it does not have BTC. So maybe your Bitcoin is in your 2nd wallet.

After you replace restart your Bitcoin core wallet and let us see if your Bitcoin is there but I think you will need to use "-rescan" after you replace wallet.dat but if you don't want to wait for long, dump the private keys of your wallet and import them to another wallet like Electrum. It doesn't need to download the whole blockchain and it will show you the right balance of your wallet.

However, if it doesn't show any balance the same as your 1st wallet then try to use block explorer to check those public keys or addresses if there is a past transaction and maybe you already sent them to another wallet or in exchanges.

If you have a "wallet.dat" file... it is highly likely that it is NOT Electrum... Electrum wallet files do not have a ".dat" extension (or any extension)... additionally, they use a completely different file format from Bitcoin Core, and you would not have been able to find the "name" sequence with "NUL SOH EOT name*" etc...

As mentioned above by khaled0111, the fact that it says "bc1" indicates you have a relatively new wallet.dat... certainly, it is not one from 2012... as the bech32 addresses were only introduced in Bitcoin Core 0.16.0, which was released in Feb 2018.

Do both of your wallet.dat files show the same addresses when you search for "name"? Or do they show different addresses? Huh If they show different addresses, do they both show "bc1" addresses or does one have addresses that start with a "1" (or something other than "bc1")? Huh
