It's pretty clear that Satoshi is not Asian culture-wise. Bitcoin was never offered directly in an Asian language. Whatever. TV has never been canonically correct to reality.

Aye, but it better fits what the stereotypical American views as the face of someone that his insanely smart with math..

Never heard of the show either, though to be fair i don't watch much t.v.  I will definetly tune in for an episode about Bitcoin however!  Did they have a plot drawn out for the episode?  And, anyone here thinking about casting for the parts? =)

My wife watches this show and so, consequently, I've seen a few episodes. It's not bad, per se, just not my cup of tea. It will probably be as effective at turning people onto bitcoin as a commercial on the Lifetime channel.

I see that the Bitcoin community is buying up the price, now it is about 45 % over its low if you look at the couple of months back. My target of 2-3 dollars that I had when Bitcoin was at 6 dollars is now fulfilled.

So what will happen now? Two things I think, first it will get back to lower levels after this buying optimism is gone, it will happen within 1-2 weeks. After that, let see it this show will get some new interest in, the up side is still pretty small, the main reason is the high level of inflation that still is in the system. At today's rates the inflation level in USD is around 20 000 USD/day, a pretty big sum with the Bitcoin community that have around 400 active users (top number for this month) on its biggest forum.

That would be 400+ online *at one time*  - not the total active for the month.

Ok, lets say 800, or even 1000. 1000 active members, that is still not that of a big number if you think about the inflation numbers, it is 7500 USD/person for a year ((7200 x 2,86 x 365) / 1000). I don't think that the average user will put that type of USD in to the Bitcoin Economy per year. As an example this thread have 600 users looking at it for the last two days.

Page views don't indicate how many people have looked at a thread, just how many times it's been loaded.  I've loaded it at least five times today to read the latest responses and I'm sure that others have too.

A lot of message-board software uses the number of members who've logged on in the last 30 days as the figure for "active users".

All I can say is that this is Bitcoin. I don't believe it until I see six confirmations.

That means that the 1000 number probably is a bit lower. But even it you calculate with the higher number of 1000, 7500 USD /person is still a hugh number. My guess is that the average investor maybe puts in more like 1000-2000 USD /year.

As a conclusion, the interest have to pick up again, if not it will trade at 2 dollars within 1-3 months. The chance of that is very high as I see it. Sustained prices at 4 dollars is very unlikely as I see it for the nearest months.

I agree in general with your sentiment that there are a lot of new coins available for a relatively small number of people - but I suspect your idea of 'active members' is on the low side.

There were over 1900 new members this month - plus I would guess a fair few thousand existing members who check in at least a few times during the month.

There have been over 200K page views per day for many days this month.
You can't look at the 'average page views per day' figure in the general statistics - as it presumably calculates for the entire period the forum has been running - and many of the older values are zeroed.

Anyway - I don't know what the real figure for how many 'active users' there are of the forum - but I strongly suspect it's more like 10K or more.
1K sounds way too low based on the available forum stats.

10 000 is to high, maybe 1000 is to low, but as I see it at this high inflation environment Bitcoin needs at least 3000-4000 active users to sustain the price at this levels.

It would be interesting if someone could show that number, total active users the last month.

Looks like at least 5Million page views in November -   take 5M / 1K people - you'd get an average of 5500 page views per person.  Now sure - some people do a lot of clicking around in a forum - but I don't think an average of 5500 per person is anywhere near reasonable.   10K people and 550 page views per person on average?  Well I'm still guessing wildly - but it passes my sniff test a bit better.

(and I guess there would be a number of hits from non forum members of course)

I think at least 3000-4000 active users is *easily* what we have now.

Well back to the topic..  even if this show does hit millions of eyeballs, I'm not expecting that to translate to sudden Bitcoin interest.

Judging by the casting notes - it looks like Bitcoin will be covered as some sort of shady, risky, illegal thing.
Is there an uptick in cocaine use when a major TV crime show features cops and lawyers chasing users?
I'm guessing not, and similarly - I don't expect this to bring the hordes to bitcoin.

It might get a few people intrigued, or at least make them more likely to read when they later come across the word bitcoin online, so in a way it's still a good bit of publicity (I hope!)

If it airs to 13 million people, and if Bitcoin is mentioned many times in the episode it will bring some interest, the problem is that it can be a short term thing. The positive part is that it is at a time when the Bitcoin Economy is shrinking and desperately needs something like that. It can give it a boost, no question about it, but how long time that will endure is a hard question to answer. As a risk/reward point of view, 3 dollars looks to be a to high price for the moment and it reflects the short term optimism.

If .0001% knew about cocaine a show about it would probably increase use by 10x.

Probably many will think it's a made up for the show thing. Later they'll be like "wait what, that's real what am I missing?"

Yeah.. well honestly I don't know what to expect.  Perhaps cocaine was a bad example - maybe better would be some new designer drug X that nobody has heard of. I don't think it'd make people suddenly hunt for that, except for a few people already into drugs. So maybe this show will just push a few more of the IT savvy people towards bitcoin.
I recently encountered a young bloke studying IT at university who'd never heard of it - so the awareness is still pretty patchy despite all the coverage. What really pushes people towards something is if your peers are using it.

Dudes, do some research before jizzing yourselves. Good Wife season 3 only has 12 episodes.

I'm pretty sure that if CBS had renewed that show for 23 episodes it would show up on tv.com.

CBS is currently casting season 3 episodes of ‘The Good Wife’ which  stars  Julianna Margulies. The an hourlong drama for CBS is about the wife of a politician who returns to her law practice after her husband goes to jail.

Filming of season 3 will be on going until about early April 2012. Casting directors are seeking men and women, any ethnicity, ages 18+ for principal roles and background extras. AFTRA preferred but not required.

Background extras should forward color photo snapshot or/headshot and contact info to: Comer Casting, 336 W. 37th St., Suite 315, NYC 10018 or email comercasting@gmail.com.  Please put ‘The Good Wife Background Extras’ in the

While, it is certainly possible the Bitcoin thing was made up, I see no reason to believe CBS only ordered 12 episodes this season. Unless you have a link to info stating such, I have to belive otherwise.

Touche. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

waiting sucks. Hopefully by the time they get the Dec.4 episode out the next few will be announced.

and CBS!

Now advertisers will see a new, untapped market of viewers with $0 in real money, but literally millions in spergdollars and will this start advertising services in Bitcoin!

This may actually be Bitcoin's moment, brb finally buying in.

Maybe I've been watching too much Max Keiser but it struck me that perhaps this The Good Wife episode could be Hollywood's gift to the US government for SOPA.

I'm wondering how many times the word "Bitcoin" will be heard at the episode. My guess is: one.

Was this show supposed to be on tonight? Did anyone see it?

As far as I got it it was Sunday. I actually watched another episode and checked the figures and my conclusion is this is really a well done, fast paced series with, according to wikipedia, 13,000,000 watchers. The interview Bruce did with some of the actors sounded absolutely not like the minds behind the script were up for a plot against bitcoin itself, so I expect it to be really a mayor boost in popularity.

I actually watch this series regularly.  Personally I'm looking forward to the episode, but I think the hype is ridiculous and I don't think it will have any real impact on Bitcoin growth aside from speculators with high hopes.  Publicity is good, but nobody is going to see this episode and go "ZOMG what is that bitcoin thing, it's real, wow!  Let's dump lots of money into it without having a clue about what it actually is!"

It usually takes a few hours to sufficiently explain bitcoin in enough depth to tech/econ savvy people, and even then most exhibit a healthy skepticism before bothering to look into it any further.  Expecting some kind of massive boost from an inaccurate fictional portrayal in a TV drama is silly.  I think the segment that appeared on Fox News "Freedom Watch" with Napolitano was much more important.  They actually explained what it was to an audience of folks that would have genuine interest in it.

All that said, greed doesn't necessarily follow logic, so I could easily be wrong.  Place your bets.  Smiley

It will not make people jump into trading bitcoins - but it will be the first exposure to many and it can also lead to more media in a snowball effect.  But I agree that this will play out in a much longer time frame than most speculator expect it now.

If this article ( http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/13/the-good-wife-graham-phillips_n_1200021.html ) is anything to go by, it looks like regular watchers of the show will be more engrossed by the ongoing soap-opera story arcs and ignore the 'bitcoin' stuff as mere filler.

It's funny how people in this forum were hoping this soap opera will make Bitcoin more prominent/valuable, whereas so far only obvious effect is that more people will be watching the TV show.

actually no... ;p  They seemed to have scraped a LOT of the ideas for the episode from 'real' things online. So, it is a real quesiton. ya never know.  I have a neaky feeling they got the self representing client/lawyer thing from michael piscuzzy...

Average US viewership is around 10 million.  There are viewers outside the US.  With only 8 million BTC, do you really think the average user has less than 1?

just in case if you were confused about the ending at first...  it made sense once i looked up Round Robin
Quote
The modern use of the term dates from the 17th Century French ruban rond (round ribbon).[2][3] This described the practice of signatories to petitions against authority (usually Government officials petitioning the Crown) appending their names on a document in a non-hierarchical circle or ribbon pattern (and so disguising the order in which they have signed) so that none may be identified as a ringleader.

This practice was adopted by sailors petitioning officers in the Royal Navy (first recorded 1731).

I loved the episode.

I especially like how they redid the "What is Bitcoin ?" video, it was quite funny to see a "rip-off" for the purposes of dramatization.

Bitcoin: the only currency you can store directly into your brain.

What this planet needs is a good 0.0005 BTC US nickel.

This looks like a boring series that I will probably never watch again, though I liked their Bitcoin coverage. My favorite part was the implication that Bitcoin is something that all young people are familiar with. Like it's an integral part of Internet culture. Not really true yet, but I like the idea.

The real Satoshi story is way more interesting than the story in the show, though.

I actually like the show, my girlfriend got me hooked on it a couple of seasons ago. There's some good drama, and it is a story from an interesting perspective, that of the wife of a cheating, dirty politician.

Great show! Amazed at how much they addressed many of the issues -  ie., "digital commodity vs. currency". Although I think most of the Occupy Wall Street are clueless to bitcoin (contrary to what was said in the episode), but many of them will now know about it. And then there was Kramer...shocking that an establishment insider like him called it a "commodity" vs. a "currency" (of course this is only an acting role). Perhaps the banksters don't fear bitcoin and I'm not sure if that's good. Huh

Just heard about it and checked out about half of it.  Interesting discussion in the courtroom about how to treat the concept of Bitcoin.  Never been into drama shows though and don't watch much TV but I thought it was pretty interesting.

Oh Loaded, who art up in Mt. Gox, hallowed be thy name!  Thy dollars rain, thy will be done, on BTCUSD.  Give us this day our daily 10% 30%, and forgive the bears, as we have bought their bitcoins.  And lead us into quadruple digits

I thought the episode was excellent.

BUT from my perspective, this show, and every other mass market publicity for bitcoin is a double-edged sword.  On one hand, it will cause thousands of people to Google bitcoin and learn more about it, thus helping the economy grow.  On the other hand, some of those people will find these forums when they Google, and see what a load of pedantic aspergians we have around here, and it will frighten them away.  Speaking of, does Atlas still post?

Watched the episode today--twice--and it was fantastic!  Even my 65ish year old parents, which had previously been totally uneducated with bitcoin, were fascinated and learned a lot.  It's a lot more interesting when people on TV are talking about something, I suppose.

The crowning moment of writer stupidity was when they actually said an IP address that was incoherent.

Otherwise, not terrible. They seemed to imply that bitcoin is incorporated, closed source and somehow subject to identity verifying code injection. Hopefully they talk about it more with that newly formed love interest. I was stunned at how many times they actually said the word. Looking forward to that montage on youtube soon.

Bitcoin combines money, the wrongest thing in the world, with software, the easiest thing in the world to get wrong.

Spoilers:

-Bitcoin is still an illegal currency,
-It is too much of a hassle,
-It was created by a lawyer who needs a lawyer,
-Super-cryptologists can embed secret messages in the bitcoin "code" using other people's computers remotely, and the IP addresses used are easily traceable for anyone who wants to look,
-In a world where you have a moderate stack of cash to plunk down, you can get a whole law firm's undivided attention and a one-day trial in a well decorated courtroom with a jovial judge and no jury when charged with a crime by the federal government.
-Software coders are fidgety asian dweebs who would proclaim they love a snoopy lawyer they just met.

and
- when you are accused of giving a bribe, you get ineptly questioned by a pretty investigator at whatever location you specify, instead of being woken up at 3am by g-men with guns.

Well yeah..  the Len Sassaman tribute and the Good Wife addition are awesome..
pity about Luke-Jr's superstitious vomit in the middle, but in a way even that is a testament(no pun intended) to the freedom granted by decentralization.

-In a world where you have a moderate stack of cash to plunk down, you can get a whole law firm's undivided attention and a one-day trial in a well decorated courtroom with a jovial judge and no jury when charged with a crime by the federal government.

This show had the same problem that most any other movie or TV show has.  It presents a universe where space and time bend to the whims of the story.

Really, the guy hires a lawyer, get 2 working full time, goes to trial, gets arrested, has a bail hearing, goes to trial again, gets acquitted, goes to the bank and spends 20 minutes getting a cashiers check, and returns to the law office all in 72 hour period.  72 hours because the lawyers kid sees his girl friend three times.

Meanwhile the clever lawyer changes from one sexy outfit to another dozens of times, perhaps indicating the passage of time but more correlated with the change of scene.  She meets twice with another sexy investigator to conduct business in a bar, never really consuming a drink or paying for one.

One thing I really liked about Star Trek was it's vision of a future in which women didn't age, had great bodies, perfect makeup and whore skin tight outfits with short skirts.  This lawyer world shares that same vision.

In the original Star Trek women caused most of the problems yet in the end did what they were told, all the while providing an interesting romantic relationship to the main guy.  I could see a little of that in this lawyer world.

I just saw the show.
I dont remember who it was, who promised to drink one shot of rum (was it?) for every time the word bitcoin was used. Do we have the address of the hospital he is in to send him flowers Cheesy.

As a bitcoin "commercial", I guess it was much better than I had hoped for. At the same time, I dont think it will do much. I dont think Id get the urge to google bitcoin after seeing it. If you had never heard of it, youd probably still think it was purely fictional. The only way for this to have an impact, is when its combined with some actual bitcoin news, so people understand it really exists. Then people may remember the term from the show and look in to it, but if you only heard of it by watching this show, slim chance I think.

Well, a lot of people did. Apparently search word "bit coin" spiked to 6th in the hot trends list. Currently it's not in the top 20 anymore but it was there for a good while.

The following review of the show will contain SPOILERS.

Personally I was REALLY FUCKING IMPRESSED by the show. Well, the episode itself was quite boring and I think a lot of regular viewers didn't like the episode too much, but simply the fact that the word "bitcoin" was said so many times makes it awesome.

And I don't think that there is any doubt that Bitcoin is a real thing. It could've been a bit shady if not for the ending where the *main character of the show stated that she actually bought a bitcoin online* !!!. That and the comment Biggs' character made afterwards. It's highly unlikely that after that viewers thought that it's all just made up.

Of course there were a lot of issues with the technicalities but that's entirely irrelevant. The beginning was awesome where the main character's kid and his girlfriend basically explained the thing to the main character and then the ending was gold as well. Also the actual mystery of "who is Mr. Bitcoin" was solved in an interesting way, it's possible that the show is close to the truth regarding the real life Mr. Bitcoin.

Er, the premise of the show is that creating private currencies is illegal, except that's not true. I wasn't able to see it (not in the US), but that doesn't sound really that great to me.

If only you could see the irony in what is implied by people making a 600 page thread to complain about someone elses 'obsession'.....

but, I agree. and no one has said much of it after it was pointed out that it was a similar use as the 555 phone numbers....

It's kinda funny, I saw the complaints about that before I saw the show, so I wouldn't have noticed otherwise. But after he says the IP address, which admittedly is something weird like 187.32.4 she just stares at him (rewatching it, she's looking over his shoulder) so I was half expecting her to berate him for a bunk IP.  But she just said "Oh I know that IP!"

But she just said "Oh I know that IP!"
Which of course, it the slightly more fundamental problem, the idea people would recognize IPs and be able to match them to individuals.  Then again, this wasnt a show about TCP-IP, so who cares.
