I've read so many versions of the powering PCIE risers story.

I've read that a riser draws 75 watts

I've read that you can power two risers off a 54 watt Sata cable

I've read that you should never power a riser off Sata as they cause fires

I've seen people on YouTube power only the riser and not the GPU WTF

I assume the truth is that I can power two risers of a Sata/Molex cable, as long as I power the GPU with a good PCIE power source?

I plan to use an HX1200i to power four GPUs for now, as it's the PSU I have. We will likely go to 12 GPUs and three smaller PSUs eventually. Assuming the profitability makes sense.

The draw depends on your cards, and how much wattage a riser can handle depends on the cable. Most of the time, it's the power cable (extension) failure, yes the SATA/molex to 6-pin cable one or SATA cable if you have SATA risers.

The strongest cable obviously the 6-pin, but the problem is you will have a limited 6-pin cable to power the risers plus the gpus. After this point, what we do is a workaround to get the 6-pin like power from SATA/molex. From common sense, you will need more than one SATA/molex port to power one riser.

Therefore, I still prefer two SATA/Molex port -> two SATA/Molex to 6-pin (Y-cable) -> one 6-pin riser. The old school build.
