Any reason for me to not peel coins right now? I’m feeling the risk involved with selling and posting isn’t worth the potential increase in value.

Anybody have a helpful opinion?

A very tough question indeed...

If you do peel, I highly recommend for you to get a Ballet wallet and use that to sweep the funds.
Our Ballet wallets will help you split out all of the fork coins, and then allow you to properly send them out (exchange, sell, etc) easily.
We even have built-in integration with Changelly and ChangeNow to allow you to quickly exchange your fork coins to another crypto (such as BTC).

Just my 2 cents.  (Yes, I'm biased about Ballet, but I'm sure many other forum members here can attest to the usefulness of using Ballet wallets as an intermediate tool for peeling & sweeping physical bitcoins.)

So if you do choose to peel your Cas, please give Ballet a try.  You won't be disappointed; and I'll personally give you a money-back guarantee on the Ballet wallet you buy.   Smiley

Does Ballet offer any sort of free software option or is a purchase required to utilize the sweeping features offered by Ballet? I only ask because if someone is peeling their coins, they’re likely cashing out so buying another storage device (or card) seems like purchasing something they intend to use only once. I could see how a free software option that generated Ballet profits through fee deals with the above mentioned exchanges might be a sought after method of peeling these coins and claiming forks.

It is so frustrating knowing you hold something so valuable and having such limited safe options in which to sell.

I am hoping that in the future some of the larger auction houses will be open to listing some of the rare Bitcoin coins.

I also believe that these coins are a big part of history and will command a nice price once a safe place to list is found.

I wonder OP how did this situation came to an end? Did you decided to hold back on peeling the coin? I've seen that you've used minerjones in the past for some transaction, has it ever occurred to you to use it once again ? Or do you really believe that it isn't worth the effort? I think that selling the coin always brings a benefit to you (in this case) since you don't really seem to care about peeling or not, and you may just want the BTC of it while another person actually cares about the coin itself (not peeled) and it's willing to pay you for it - In the end both parties will get what they need.

Well, I just found this thread and this forum.  I too have a 2012, 1B funded coin.  I'm considering peeling it.  To be honest I don't know what my real options are that are considered 'safe'-   The coin was given to me at the DEFCON security conference back when these were first being created.  Thoughts?

This coin has the added bonus of having been on stage at DEFCON.

So I thought at the very least I'd share my experience here on the Bitcoin Forum so far.

I came here looking for advice/discussion on selling vs. peeling vs. holding my 1 BTC fully funded Casascius coin.

I joined and paid for a copper membership so that I could communicate with less latency (limits on newby accounts).

I found two relevant threads on the subject (this one and another), and joined in the conversation.

I had one person reach out offering to purchase with a physical meetup, but did not hear back after agreeing on conditions.

I had a different person reach out to "warn" me off meeting people to sell the coin, and asking if he was too late to make an offer.  I tried to respond and the account had blocked my account so I couldn't.  (Interesting that THAT account was a brand new account as well...interesting.)

A few people sent helpful messages and a few replies to threads were helpful/useful.

In celebration of Elon on SNL tonight I'm just going to peel this and go that route.

So thanks(?) for the help.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

Did you went trough with peeling of the casascius coin? If not you could check back one of my first posts in this thread (here) to see that it is not impossible to sell these kind of items in here. I would say, however, that the most difficult thing may be the fact that you won't be able to sell it as fast as you would want it to.
