Any reason for me to not peel coins right now? I’m feeling the risk involved with selling and posting isn’t worth the potential increase in value.

Anybody have a helpful opinion?

Bitcoin mining is now a specialized and very risky industry, just like gold mining. Amateur miners are unlikely to make much money, and may even lose money. Bitcoin is much more than just mining, though!

Well we can't really give you any more help rather than a simple "yes" or "no" depending on who reads this thread and the feeling/opinion that he/she has regarding Casascius Coins.

To better understand your point of view may I ask why is that you're thinking in peeling the coin? Is if for financial reasons? Do you need the money to buy something that is deemed essential for you?

Honestly it's your risk assessment and what you are comfortable with.  Depending on the coin its a great way to see the country(world) and go p2p for the trade.  If you aren't comfortable with an in person transactions, in the US there are police stations you can use to do the transaction.  I've done it multiple times and its about as safe as a transaction can be.

Where are you located and what coins are you talking about peeling? If its silver .1 or .5's it's definitely worth selling to a collector for the amazing premium they hold.
Escrow has been a great alternative to help with the exchange if meeting in person is not an option and you use very good mail service. Hope this helps please post pics if you decide to sell

If you have desirable coins then there are a few people here who will travel to you to buy them.  This removes the risk of mailing the coins and using escrow.  I would post pictures of what you have and state that you are only willing to do in-person trade.

Some good advice. Cheers all. I’m based in the UK and I definitely have some desirables. I do have some silvers as well as some older ones too.

I feel a bit stupid for not selling a little before when the premium was so good. I’m not sure what a silver 1 or 0.5 would go for now.

I’ll get some photos up soon

Selling it right now considering the value inside versus the premium amount is not worth the risk. I recently peeled 2 of my 1BTC brass casascius coin and enjoy the profit by scalping it. I almost earn more than the premium amount of it.

If you have a lot of coins in your collection, It's not bad to peel some and take profit. You can still sell the peeled coin too in case you want to sell it.

First off, you shouldn't feel "stupid" for any kind of action if you believed in the product that you have been holding/collected trough the years. At least that's my perspective of it, I guess it's worth 1 satoshi? Cheesy
Also, I'm sure there are a lot of members that have successfully sold Casascius coins right there in the forum OP. You could ask them how did the transaction went and what steps they took to keep safe/anonymous as possible during the transaction. Regarding that idea, I've managed to find the recent threads of Casascius coins being sold:

I think that it's always good for you to edit your 1st post with decent pictures of the coin to show it's state meanwhile you gather feedback from the previous sellers regarding the methods that they've used in their auctions/selling of this kind of item.

Call me a sap, but Cas’s coins — especially the silver — are something to behold and a key part of Bitcoin history. Lots of trusted folks on this forum in the UK who I’m sure would be willing to travel to you for coins they desire. You’ll capture the premium, and the coin will live on. Smiley

There are many great resources here who have been around the block, so don’t hesitate to seek advice.

Cheers!

Seems to me that the value of these coins has never been higher (unless you ask people who think 1 BTC is 1 BTC). If you’re planning to cash out, I can’t think of a better time in history to do so. Enjoy your riches friend. It takes a strong investor to still be holding these bad boys and you deserve the fruits of your labor.

Dont listen to him lol you peeling just makes his collection more valuable. 1 btc is 1 btc and will always be more valuable than any amount of fiat

Yeah, I’m gonna disagree with him also. IMO, the premium on unpeeled Cas is going to continue to be very significant, if not more so, as we see more institutional interest and widespread adoption. There will be a lot of rich people realizing Cas is a thing and want in on it.

Yeah for sure dont peel a Cas. especially if it's one of the smaller denominations.

How much have brass 1s been going for though. I think I got 1.15 for 1 a couple of years back. I don’t think they are going for that any more are they?

I would say it depends on condition but getting 1.05BTC-1.1BTC should be feasible (higher premium on the lower denominations).  Could you post some pictures of your collection; I'm sure it will help push the sale.

I can see why someone would want to peel.  Its much more simple than finding a buyer and then figuring out the safest way to meet and exchange.

Personally I'm holding onto my coins currently myself and have no plans to peel.  But the allure is there.

You would have to declare them as monetary instruments if you cross an international border with them. If you can’t sell p2p or with a lawyer’s assistance (don’t be dumb, consider absolute value of transaction and pay a minute fraction of that amount to protect yourself), don’t feel bad about peeling them. That’s what I did.

No longer buying/selling Casascius coins. Beware scammers.
