I like your definition about mainstream, non-mainstream and junk coins. I completely agree with you about this. When it comes to long-term investment we had better choose mainstream or non-mainstream coins, as they have the best dev teams, the best communities and they are likely to give us money within time. As opposed to them, we should avoid junk coins, they are suitable only for trading.
