Mining/ASIC

The term ASIC seems to be misused, a little clarity...

CMP is not an ASIC, it's a vector processing platform.
A GPU is a vector processor on a graphics card.
Vector processors are used in supercomputers.
A processor can run any application via software.
ASIC is an Application Specific Integrated Circuit, not a synonym for miner.
An ASIC can only run the specific application it's designed for.
An ASIC miner is a miner built with ASICs designed for mining a specific algorithm.

misused technically but not misused business wise.

if you buy that with an "asic" in mind then you are good to go. but if you buy that with "video card" in mind, that will fuck you up later on.

That ambiguity is the problem. If everyone gets it right from the begining there's no confusion.
"ASIC" has not only become a synonym for "ASIC miner" but also "FPGA miner", and now it's being expanded to include "CMP".

just keep open minded about the business perspective, it was "business" that created this abomination in the first place LOL

AMD just have to put a video output and they already out competed NVIDIA LOL call it radeon VIII. The architecture might be a bit slower or at par with 3080ti for gaming but if you don't want to mine (bear market vibes) anymore, some gamers will grab that "video card" any day vs 3070 ti or lesser cards.  Wink

Of course it's all about business, but I was just being picky about the use of the word ASIC Whenever I see it I have
to pause and think if they really mean "ASIC miner" of just "mining rig". Some people claim an algorithm has an ASIC when
in reality it's a FPGA. When I saw the CMP referred to as an ASIC it was too much.

Farm is another one, I've seen it when they mean rig.

Anyway, with CMP it looks like Nvidia are trying to prevent multiple markets for their products. Gamers get Geforce LHR,
miners get CMP, supercomputers get Tesla and professional video gets Quadro. They don't want CMP in supercomputers,
the don't want Geforce used for mining of video production...

That will reward big farms that can get CMP and penalize hobby miners that use their gaming rigs for mining.

I can't wait for Intel ARC, maybe a third player can shake things up.
