I’m not sure if they’re doing a Halloween promotion, but so far they’ve always had discounts for Black Friday - I bought my device in 2019, and the discount was 35%. I wrote something about my experience here.

Based on their Twitter feed, they didn't offer a Halloween promo code last year, but if you can wait a little more, their Black Friday promos usually run from mid-November until the end of the month...

From what I've understood, the firmware update only fixes the "temperature error" while the main battery problem ^{[hardware issue]} still remains ^{[unfortunately]}!

I will add that the last 2 discounts I know of - 2020 Christmas pack and 2021 Valentine's day - the promotions were rather disappointing: $25 and $15 vouchers to buy from Coinify.

However, Nano X issues are more a concern than the possible discounts/promotions.

I would personally not purchase a Nano X because of everything that has been happening recently. I have the Nano S and think it's a nifty little gadget and I would pick that over the Nano X if I had to use a Ledger product again. I am personally looking to buy a Trezor Model T on discount to further divide my portfolio.

How does it look in terms of discounts for the Trezor T and do they have a history or giving users discount codes if they ask for them?

Big mistake, and I would not waste any money ordering devices that most likely has faulty battery, temperature issues, and who knows what else,
I see now latest reports from people who say that after last update even their seed word check is all messed up and not working.

It makes sense, because they can solve the problem with the battery only if they detect what the problem is, and when they remove all defective devices from the circulation. With each new failure, it is increasingly confirmed that something is wrong in that company.

I can only say that I am completely satisfied with my Nano X, the battery lasts a very long time and everything else works - but after everything that has happened and is happening in Ledger, I would not buy any of their products at this time (and probably not in the future).

Nano S would be a slightly better choice than nano X, but it has smaller memory space limitation if you plan to use bunch of altcoins, so you can install only up to 6 apps (nano x can install up to 100 apps).
I would rather choose hardware wallet that is open source like Bitbox, Keystone that is airgapped, or even Trezor if you use it with a passphrase.

The Nano S I have is working flawlessly for years, but it is still a device that appeared on the market in 2016 and the question is how long it will still have support. Personally, the Nano X is far more comfortable for me to use because it has a larger screen so you can check your address at once, not like the Nano S which displays the address in three separate parts. The difference in storage has been mentioned countless times, and that's where the Nano X comes into play - and while Ledger is always trying to optimize firmware and apps for the Nano S, there's very little room for improvisation.

In case there are no problems that currently exist, I would definitely recommend Nano X if you really want Ledger HW, but if you still decide to buy it, you must be aware that you can get a device that may have a battery problem or something else - Ledger has become a company that constantly produces problems for its customers.

If you are looking for a hardware wallet where you will only store your bitcoin, the Nano S will do the job. Besides bitcoin, you will be able to fit 1-2 additional stand-alone applications. At different times throughout my "crypto career", I have had a few altcoins on my Nano S including ether, stellar, tron, dota, but honestly there has never been enough space to fit 6 apps at once.

In some app combinations, it should work.
You should know that Ledger has stand-alone and dependent apps. The stand-alone ones take up more space on the internal storage. Bitcoin is a stand-alone app, while litecoin or dogecoin are dependent on the Bitcoin app, for example. You'll be able to include multiple Bitcoin-dependent apps without a problem, but you will run out of space if you try to install the Bitcoin, Electrum, Tron, and Stellar app, for example. Only 3 of these will probably work.

The Nano S problem, as said, is the memory space.

If you use small number of coins long time or you have a laptop at hand to uninstall some apps and install new ones as you need, you'll be find. Of course, if you plan to leave without a laptop, this needs a bit of planning.
And if you want to use it with an Android mobile you'll need an OTG data cable (not necessarily from Ledger) or adapter.


Also, if you plan to use Ledger's official online store, my advice is to try to avoid giving them your home address (send to POBox or similar).

@OmegaStarScream, as others have already mentioned, the biggest issue with the Nano S is the limited memory space, but you won't have any trouble if you only plan to use a few different coins at once. I would recommend waiting for Black Friday or Cyber Monday to get the best deals. They usually offer a discount on those days every year.

I agree. In fact, the next time I order from Ledger, I will order it to be delivered to my mother-in-law's address.

Like previous users said, if you're willing to wait I'm sure you'll find good deals on Black Friday period. For instance, I know that last year Trezor had a 20 % discount for all their products[1]. If you aren't able to wait and are interested in Trezor Model T, you can take the offer from coinmap.org[2] where you benefit from 10 % off your order. Other open source hardware wallets that have done discounts in the past that I could recommend is either Bitbox[3] (not a discount though) or Opendime[4]. Either way, I'm sure that if you can wait you'll get a better "bang from your buck" since most hardware wallet providers end up doing some kind of offer around Black Friday period.

Something to pay attention to if you decide to buy Nano X, customers are warned that the time to send the shipment is as much as three weeks, which means that they do not have enough devices in stock (at least not those who have no battery issues). There is no such warning for the Nano S.



It seems that there is some kind of discount on Nano X which is obviously part of the affiliate program and is shared privately.

The reason why I want to switch to Ledger is that I want to start holding some alts that are not currently supported by Trezor. I currently own the old model so a few new alts are not supported and won't be, there is the Model T but it's a bit expensive.

Now regarding Ledger nano limited memory, I was aware of that but when does that happen exactly? Do you need to install the Ethereum app in order to use Ledger with MetaMask for example? or you're basically not consuming any memory if using the HW with third-party software?!

Yes, you need to install for that indeed the (Ledger) Ethereum app onto your Nano S. And that stands for each separate coin, basically (including Bitcoin)
I didn't use Metamask, but in MEW, at least I remember I've set something extra (in the ledger) and all the tokens I wanted were also supported (since they are on ETH network), but I didn't use that for quite long time now.

With ledger nano s you have capacity of only 144kb that is enough for up to six apps, Bitcoin app is around 40kb, ethereum app is 50kb, so you need to install all those apps to use any third party wallet.
Please note that metamask + ledger connection currently have a lot of problems when used for ethereum, probably connected with that EIP update and fact that metamask is very slow with their own updates.

I am not interested in keeping any new altcoins on ledger because they are causing so much problems, and you can check ledger reddit page to see many people complaining how they can't send their shitcoins.

The Nano S has always been limited in storage, just as is the case with the Nano X - there is always some upper limit. The space to install multiple apps began to shrink as stand-alone apps became larger in size, and each new firmware began to take up more and more storage.

It is impossible to use Ledger HW with any UI without having the app installed on the device, otherwise it would not be possible to communicate on the relation Device -> Ledger Live / MetaMask.

If those altcoins that you have are ERC-20 tokens (I am assuming they are since you mentioned MetaMask), I think you are better off keeping them in your MetaMask wallet. You can always check https://www.ledger.com/supported-crypto-assets to see if Ledger supports the assets you own.

dkbit98 is correct when he mentioned various issues we have seen in the past when there are too many coins in your Ledger portfolio. A user in our Croatian local board couldn't access or do anything with his Ledger Ethereum account for a long time because it couldn't sync with the network. The culprit was a token he had in his account there. It took a while before Ledger fixed the problem. dkbit98 maybe remembers more details about that particular case?!
