So there's no point keeping it in the OP Exactly I just checked the OP (it's been a while), and I'm surprised so many "non-privacy focused VPNs" charge such a high rates! That seems like a complete waste of money.
Unfortunately, you're right... This is mostly the case with their monthly plans, but their one & two-year plans have more reasonable prices [except for NordVPN, which now appears to charge a separate amount for its dedicated IP services (back in the day, this was included with basic subscriptions)]. I mean: I should start a VPN provider Please do so and a lot of us will be loyal customers [assuming that there'll be good discounts]

I mean: I should start a VPN provider Please do so and a lot of us will be loyal customers [assuming that there'll be good discounts] I wasn't serious, I was just assuming it must have a huge profit margin. If I compare the cost of (budget) bandwidth with the price VPN providers ask, it should be good business. But if I think about the amount of work and skills required (front- and backend development, app development, payment integration, legal complications and registration in a privacy friendly country, abuse handling, etc.), I end up with the same conclusion I had 5 days ago on a completely unrelated subject: I don't have the skills, budget and connections to create this.

It looks like searching for a VPN is dangerous, as Microsoft has identified a campaign that uses fake VPN clients to lure victims to download a malicious ZIP files. Below are the details: n mid-January 2026, Microsoft Defender Experts identified a credential theft campaign that uses fake virtual private network (VPN) clients distributed through search engine optimization (SEO) poisoning. The campaign redirects users searching for legitimate enterprise software to malicious ZIP files on attacker-controlled websites to deploy digitally signed trojans that masquerade as trusted VPN clients while harvesting VPN credentials. Microsoft Threat Intelligence attributes this activity to the cybercriminal threat actor Storm-2561.
Active since May 2025, Storm-2561 is known for distributing malware through SEO poisoning and impersonating popular software vendors. The techniques they used in this campaign highlight how threat actors continue to exploit trusted platforms and software branding to avoid user suspicion and steal sensitive information. By targeting users who are actively searching for enterprise VPN software, attackers take advantage of both user urgency and implicit trust in search engine rankings. The malicious ZIP files that contain fake installer files are hosted on GitHub repositories, which have since been taken down. Additionally, the trojans are digitally signed by a legitimate certificate that has since been revoked.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security/blog/2026/03/12/storm-2561-uses-seo-poisoning-to-distribute-fake-vpn-clients-for-credential-theft/So I guess VPN is also in the cross-hair of cyber criminals as weapons to lure potential victims.

So I guess VPN is also in the cross-hair of cyber criminals as weapons to lure potential victims. That's one of the reasons I only run VPN software inside a VM, or on a spare laptop that I can wipe at any moment. To quote myself: How to prevent this1. Don't use Windows, but we both know you're not going to change that.

@Synchronice I just noticed ExpressVPN no longer has a Bitcoin/cryptocurrency option [screenshot] and based on " this post on their subreddit", it appears this has been the case for at least the past two months. Thank you very much for noticing this. I already edited the original post. I'm actually sorry for being a little late, I was having some rest for a few weeks. What a stupid move was this from them. I don't know the current situation, but some years ago ExpressVPN was by far the best and the only one that reliably worked for Netflix/Amazon etc (I used it mainly for that reason) so it maybe that's why they are still getting away with those prices.
I have also heard that ExpressVPN was a great choice for Netflix streaming.

That is another reason to make a switch from using wind0ws to good open source Linux OS. I wouldn't worry about this news, but there are a bunch of crap VPN services, and some of them are honeypots. I have also heard that ExpressVPN was a great choice for Netflix streaming.
ExpressVPN is a terrible VPN, most likely a honeypot, and Edward Snowden publicly said everyone to stop using it.

We are used to it, it's an OS that we were using since our childhood to play video games. There are many games and software created for Windows in general and it's what makes Windows attractive. Linux is absolutely better choice for safety and privacy but many people do not prioritize it. For them, Windows brings more pros than Linux because their priorities are different. I don't like ExpressVPN. I don't know if it's a honeypot or not but it's not a VPN I would use for privacy, I would use it for streaming though. That's why I have Privacy Focused and Non-Privacy Focused.

Small reminder for everysone that NYM VPN discount is still available, and you can get 87% lower price if you pay with NYM tokens. This can be on native NYM chain, on ethereum and on BNB chain, and price should be less than $29 for 2 years contract. YOu can still pay with BTC, monero or other coins but price is much higher, so you can simply exchange them only for payment purposes. Here is the thing about Windows. We are used to it, it's an OS that we were using since our childhood to play video games. There are many games and software created for Windows in general and it's what makes Windows attractive.

$1,20 per month? I might get this. I always used cheap and not-so-trustworthy VPNs for some non sensitive stuff. But now that Brazil is passing laws to require KYC for everything, I might get a good one. I was thinking Mullvad, but if NYM is as good and for 1/4 of the price...

Mullvad VPN is still better and more reliable option, but I think it's a good idea to have two VPN options available. During my testing I found that Nym VPN is much less detected by websites that didn't work correctly with Mullvad in my case.

$29 for 2 years is worth it, i might get it as a backup VPN. Here is the thing about Windows. We are used to it, it's an OS that we were using since our childhood to play video games.
at least for gaming, you can play almost all games on linux (except live games with their shitty anti cheat malware). Here is the thing about Windows. trust me nothing makes windows attractive, especially windows 11, it's a shitty OS on all levels, most people use windows just because it's what thier computer coms with, and it's not like the majority of people use software that only works on windows. for just emails, watching youtube and the other normal stuff people do online, any mainstream linux distro is more than enough and does the job better than windows.

Looks like I'll try NYM too. My previous VPN is too slow now for no obvious reason at all. Although the price is still affordable, and I don't necessarily need the fastest speed for everything, getting a slow response time for no reason on a random day is annoying. A bit of a hassle to trade, though. I wonder if they'll offer auto conversion or something similar in the future. If it's not worth it, I'll probably use Mullvad again.

I'll update this thread with more VPNs for privacy and non-privacy usage but would love to hear an opinion from you guys. Great compilation, especially the distinction between privacy-focused and mainstream providers. I've been a long-time user of Mullvad precisely because of their "no-email" account policy—it's one of the few services that actually understands the "zero-knowledge" principle from a user data perspective. One thing worth adding to your "How to be sure" section is checking the provider's jurisdiction. Even a technically sound VPN can be forced to log data if they are based in a "14 Eyes" country. Also, for those using Proton or Mullvad, it's worth mentioning that they now support WireGuard natively, which is much faster and more modern than the old L2TP/PPTP protocols mentioned in the table. Thanks for keeping this guide alive!

Imho, slow VPN is useless VPN. At least for me. And that's one of the reasons I have no issues paying for Mullvad a little bit more than for some of the others.

You literally need few minutes of your time on to get tokens on uniswap or non-kyc exchanges I mentioned before. What about Kaspersky VPN?
I would never use that, or any other VPN made by antivirus scam software companies. John McAfee explained clearly that all antivirus are just spying users, and I can only imagine their VPN is doing the same.

Sorry, but this has to be one of the worst excuses from adult human I heard in a while If the excuse that I wrote above is one of the worst excuse, then what do you think, why do millions of people use Windows over Linux? I trust you. By the way, I know lots of girls who bought MacBook over a cheap laptop just because it has an apple logo while they could easily buy a very good laptop for a hundred bucks that would be absolutely enough for web browsing and watching Netflix.

What about Kaspersky VPN?
the VPN comes bundled with the antivirus i think, so if you are just going to use it to bypass geo restrictions or something that is not privacy focused, i guess it's okay, but i would still not use it. i mean kaspersky is already spying on you with the antivirus, so using or not using their VPN is not going to change anything. at least for gaming, you can play almost all games on linux (except live games with their shitty anti cheat malware).
Can I play Assassin's Creed Shadows or Uncharted 4 on Linux? I didn't know that both should be playable, but your hardware and your Linux setup might give you some trouble. you can also check other games on protondb.com to see if they would be playable or not.
