If OP can fund the game then it's best to find a beta testers for the final release.

Personally i think this one of the best ways to start a successful promotional marketing. And as this field is limited to a particular community, i see bitcointalk forum is one of the best platforms that attract a great partial from the total crypto users. Running a bounty campaign or contests in bitcointalk are good ways with good potentials.

I am a gamer at heart, and I love the newly-risen concept of Play 2 Earn NFT games. But there's so much noise on social media with startups trying to market themselves, it makes you appalled.

Let's say, hypothetically, I am an indie developer who is developing a really fun NFT game. What would be a pleasant, yet efficient way of marketing ourselves? What's a strategy that wouldn't immediately make you go "SPAM ALERT"?

How would you wanna see crypto marketing evolve in the future?
I think one way is do airdrops. Aside from airdrops, you can also pay some decent influencers to gelp you grow the community and make a name for it. Of course it will be hard at first to scale or expand it. As doubts will come over your way but its normal. A project should always accept criticism and from there you show them that you are capable of developing and also always be transparent to your every move.

And that would surely cost you because getting some influencers on introducing or trying out to hype your project isnt something that would be easy yet everything would really vary into its potential.

Considering that investors nowadays are really that wise on making out investments on which even if you do put up heavy spending on marketing but your project is shit then it would be useless.

Airdrops,Social media, Forum advertising, Influencers etc. There are lots on how you do introduce out your project.

You know what's a pleasant way of marketing that type of NFT game you develop? Fund the game itself and allow players to actually earn easy to trade token. If it's your own token, have a quick exchange that will make them play more so they'll earn more tokens to trade for bigger cryptocurrencies. And also, allow a free to play version of it which makes players allow to earn as well. When you do that, you'll have the freest marketing ever because it's the people who have tried to earn and enjoy that game of yours are going to be your marketing partner for free.
They'll speak and voice out as they spread the good news of what you have developed.
Funding the game when there's no investors will most likely drain the developers money itself, it should be a marketing where it could attract a potential players that would create a content or a content creator player plus the developers will do the job of marketing or find a marketing specialist to advertise about the game. There are certain ways to advertise the game like video ads in a different social media platform.

If OP can fund the game then it's best to find a beta testers for the final release.
Marketing is easy if there's a fund. He can just hire the best marketers that would certainly hit him miss or big but more of a chance that he'll get attention and the exposure that his project needs. But after that, people would go with the application and start playing the game.
When there's money from the game itself, the flocks will come and they'll be the one to share it to their friends and families that they've earned on an specific game. Even it's just a little money, for sure that there will be more users to come and there goes the next step of whichever is written on project's whitepaper. But as he implement that, he has to have an anti-cheat system for the possible abuse.

Gather an authentic community. Let's say the fun gameplay is really making the first adopter embrace the game as does the player within it, they should simply be able to form a community, and the game developer should support it. My point is, word to word may really have a huge impact on your game and to be able to gain a wider audience, I believe it is still an effective yet efficient way to spread out an indie game.

Ofcoure it will be costly. What do you expect a project will grow without funds alone? Lets be realistic here, projects that grows arr due to help of some marketing funds. Yes it would be sound like a pump and dump but thats how its work. Can you name a project that grows without help of such marketing ads or such used of influencers? There are some of course but that would take a lot of efforts and the chances arr not so confident.

very common way and i agree that these way of marketing is a big advantage as well if he really wants his project to become visible in the market or to get more attention from some investors.
Because i believe every successful projects these days took the same path when they were new and wants to expand their project.

actually it can cost alot but surely a worth it way of promoting projects..
A project should always accept criticism and from there you show them that you are capable of developing and also always be transparent to your every move.
correct, and also keep pushing and fix all the things which most people dont like, be aggressive and always accept your mistakes. Let them see how professional and very competitive you are.
