It can be both currency and asset depending on how would you use it but most people use it as an asset nowadays rather than an online payment currency. When the world know that the value of Bitcoin is increasing each time there's a Bitcoin halving that would create a bull run after a few months then people started buying and investing with it. Thus, it creates a global adoption that makes the Bitcoin price achieve a new ATH last year.
