How many CODERS has Bitcointalk?

We all know: Bitcoin is very succesful because of its code!

When Bitcoin was still new, people needed to verify if Bitcoin is legit or not. And it was possible to verify because Bitcoin is open source.
Open source made it possible for coders to look up if Bitcoin is legit or if it was maliciuos code.
And coders did it! Coders looked into it because coders knew how to do it and how to review and verify it.

As a result, Bitcoin was proven legit and capped at 21M coins. Bitcoin’s promise was true.
Coders confirmed it or Bitcoin would not have received an endorsement from coders like Hal Finney or Gavin Andresen.
Hal Finney and Gavin Andresen are coders and were involved in Bitcoin very early.
Today, Bitcoin has more coders looking into it and even coding on it or making proposals.

We know, also on Bitcointalk, coders are active because Bitcoin is a very technical subject.
When normal people ask a question here, coders will look at it and reply.
It’s a very good feature of Bitcointalk because coders are still here.

My question after all: how many coders has Bitcointalk?

The answer "yes"  to this question  doesn't mean that the user can audit bitcoin code.

For example, I know how to code some front end using jaavscript and some back end using python or golang, mainly for web development

Bitcoin code is something very different and I am not able to audit it.

Knowing how to  code a web page is very different than coding a blockchain

I'm not an expert on programming/coding part but that doesn’t mean I'm not expert on bitcoin. Also, I don’t think the code is somewhat everyone should know. I'm more than enough knowledged to participate in the network and take the full advantages of it. What else? What does my coding skill have to do anything with my participation in the bitcoin network?

Firstly, one does not need to be a coder to understand the technicalities of bitcoin. Someone that has no knowledge of coding or programming can understand bitcoin technicals very well and answer bitcoin questions. I doubt that all the people providing answers to bitcoin technical questions dwell in the back-end of bitcoin.

Again, not everyone that understands codes and that codes knows bitcoin. You can be a coder and knows nothing about Bitcoin or blockchain coding.

So, you can rephrase your question by asking how many blockchain developers are here in bitcointalk.

There are a lot them, in different language. If you mean bitcoin contributors there are a lot of them in here in the past when its on its early stage, you can check this thread^[1]. It's a list of bitcointalk users that is also a bitcoin core contributor once, active or not.

there are a few hundred coders that have been involved in bitcoin protocol coding over the years.

and many many thousands that review the code and even adjust their copy of the code to do new things not based on the main protocol.

EG saving the UTXOset of their own local dataset into new database formats into different orders and or with extra info included for their own personal use of further analysis beyond the basics.

some add in extra API/RPC commands of their own to do extra communication things with their chosen peers

its been deemed that to be a 'bitcoin dev' you need to be part of the elitist hierarchy allowed to make suggestions via the bitcoin core github commits.

where as those just reading, reviewing and tweaking their local copy of the code, not affecting the network rules. are just 'wallet coders'

oh and there are also alot of idiots who pretend to be part of this elitist crew of 'bitcoin coders' by just being loyal fans/friends of bitcoin devs. or just do silly things like spell check commits on github to get name recognition

Coding, as simple to say it but not that easily to get along with without proper understanding of it. Understanding coding and knowing all about bitcointalk are two different thing. You can be so good in both or only one of it. Majority of people here have more knowledge on bitcointalk and have little or no knowledge when it comes to coding. They’re two different aspect entirely that can’t be interlude.

This is very interesting to know that people from around the world working on bitcoin coding and contribute for the same on GitHub. If there had been team work competition then these guys would have been the winners. Its highly collaborative work being the public domain and imagine so much goes into it coding from different users who has different ways of working and contributing.

How do they do it really? Like someone jumps in over problem and state their solution and all other agree if it works properly?

yep only the top guys have the ultimate "lead maintainer" privilege that can ultimately sign off on what gets put into a release candidate

When you say, CODERs you mean people who know how to program or people who are just tech savvy and know where to find the right "codes" and use them properly?

I know some basic programming, which is mostly used in writing scripts for what I do, just to save me time.
On the other hand, I could use pieces of already written code and bind them together where I need to.
I'm not a full time programmer but I can help newbies, so I vote with yes.

I wonder if it's any more (maybe less for most) interesting to know how many have left Bitcointalk too. Pretty sure that number's not insignificant. Probably not as meaningfully impactful as coders who've left the Bitcoin project altogether, but I do wonder if anyone still active as maintainers no longer post on the forum. Have always assumed they're watching at least.

The question is not all that clear, and can and has been interpreted as:

-   How many Bitcointalk coders are there? (i.e. people that program Bitcointalk)
-   How many people, that are coders (*) are on Bitcointalk?
-   How many Bitcoin Core coders are also on Bitcointalk?
-   How many Bitcoin Core coders are there?

(*) Yesterday I went from interpreting the first option to the third, but now I believe you intended the second option. That is, to determine (a sample of) how many people that roam the forum, are actually coders, and probably more specifically, in an area related to bitcoin (and/or crypto in general ?).

Having a question so open to interpretation means that it should be readjusted for it to be of any use to you (otherwise it’s going to mix-up answers for all derivable interpretations).

I went for this, although indeed the question is rather unclear; also it must be mentioned that there are many "levels" of being a coder and many coders didn't touch the code of Bitcoin or don't even know in-depth how it's working.

But, on the other hand, it can prove (or not!) whether bitcoin attracts mostly IT-related people. Imho that assumption is no longer true, for at least 4 years now.

It is worth noting that these contributors on GitHub aren't necessarily programmers and each contribution could be very different from others. For example if you fix a typo in readme text through a commit you become a contributor (which is still a valuable thing) and yet you may not know anything about coding.
Someone who creates a new issue in the repository also receives the contributor tag but won't appear in that list.

I always found "spam" an unacceptable excuse for those who left bitcointalk. I'm sure they all left for other reasons because you can find spam everywhere on the internet, even GitHub is spammed. See the issue section of bitcoin core for example, all those issues with title that shows a dot are spam. You don't see anybody stop contributing to bitcoin core because the repository was spammed! Things were even worse in 2017 during the bcash scam period.

I guess there is a difference between forum for flight engineers and for people who just fly from time to time for holidays. Probably something like that happened to that forum.
Is it bad? I do not think so, as still we must remember the main idea was to adopt it as much as possible.

Many people join bitcoin talk and few leave everyday. So it's not really feasible to keep track of the count of coders on bitcointalk.
But you can surely keep a track of the coders who are contributing to bitcoin core from the github repo.
Also, not every coder on bitcointalk is a contributor to bitcoin core. There are many other coders as well who do other things.

Yes, it was not intended tob e specific, it was just a general question. Really setting up a flawless code is very difficult and only few can it. We know it from flawed coded Shitcoins.

But you are not a coder for special knowlege, code and more. Bitcoin is designed to be sent peer to peer from everyone and after a time it was startet, enough knowledge was set up for easy transactions.

Your assumption is a bit superficial because Bitcoin is a very technical subject and very detailed. People need no understanding of Bitcoin when bought on an exchange or as part of ETF.
It gets more difficult every step and educational content needs to be available for each topic. Luckily, we are today in a good situation and Bitcoin is heavily supported by good applications.

So, you can rephrase your question by asking how many blockchain developers are here in bitcointalk.

No, because it is a general question. I’m not requiring any title from a university or practical education.

We can see right now a very high number of CODERS.
I did not expect if but I also started my topic in Developers and it was moved to Bitcoin discussion, so very likely we will see more votes for NO (no coders).
