Here’s the simple math: power comes forth from determination, and determination is created by hunger. There’s no other way it works. Unless you are as determined as a dog after a cat, or a sailor to become a Navy Seal, you cannot tap into the greater levels of your own personal power.
Determination has two basic meanings: purpose and establishment. When you’re determined, you’re resolute, or settled, on the purpose or aim you’re after; but you’ll never be filled with purpose until you first establish what it is you truly want.
How do you know what you want? You know what you want by your hunger—that deep desire, or void, that occupies your mind. It’s the overall direction you want your life to take. It’s the great vision that torments your thoughts because it’s unfulfilled. That passion that’s eating a hole on the inside of you is what sets the agenda for what you truly want.
If you don’t have that level of hunger, you’ll have to cultivate it. If you don’t live with a gnawing in your heart for something beyond where you are, then you must create it. If you’re not hungry, then you’re satisfied, and that means you must become dissatisfied. You must learn to despise your limited existence to hunger for maximum living.
The Proof of Hatred
So long as you remain where you are, then you’re satisfied. If the last 365 days, resemble the year before that, then you’re satisfied. You might claim you’re not. You might scream, “I hate my life,” but the real proof of hatred is when you’re consistently making changes to your life. Otherwise, you love what you claim to hate because you haven’t left it yet!
If you’re satisfied, then you’re content, and content people don’t make changes. Why would they? Only someone soaked in discontentment is looking to cast off the garments of the past in order to put on something new.
This doesn’t mean leaving everything in your life. You don’t have to quit your job, abandon friends and family, or take on a new identity. What it does mean is changing those areas in your life that restrict your ability to maximize your resources. In other words, by changing you, we’ll change what’s around you.
You can’t blame your circumstances when you’re the circumstance that must change. You can’t change you until you learn to have a healthy hatred for how you’ve let yourself go. Don’t condemn yourself. That’s not the kind of hatred I’m talking about. Just become dissatisfied enough to bring about a personal transformation.
The Better You See, the More You’ll Hate
If you want to experience more personal power, then determination and hunger will release it and that comes by defining what it is you want in each area of your life. You can’t be hungry about something that’s undefined. You can’t be determined to achieve something you can’t see. Know what it is you want and spell it out in detail.
Once you do, something will happen to you. The more clearly you can define and visualize what you want, the more you’ll hate where you are. The better picture you have for what your personal changes will look like, the more dissatisfied you’ll be with what you see in your life now. This is what will push you to change. This is what will drive you out of the nest!
