New 15% discount!

Trezor currently has a new promotion, and to celebrate it, they are offering a 15% discount on Trezor One and Model T hardware wallets. This promotion will be valid until 8 November 2022.
So, if you are in the EU, the Trezor One will now cost you around €70, while Trezor T is approximately €220.

The reason for this is the introduction of Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) in Trezor Suite. Their term for it is Bitcoin savings account. Most already know that using the DCA investment strategy means buying a fixed USD/EUR amount of an asset at a fixed time. That can be once a week/month/year, etc.

There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

Oh maybe they noticed my constant complains and wining about new higher prices of their devices, so they decided to make a new discount around Halloween time.
Black Friday is November 25th and Cyber Monday few days later, so we could see new discounts around that time.
It's still a lot of money for Model T, so no thank you... €100 - €150 is most I would pay for that device.

It's their new partnership with Swan Bitcoin and BTC Direct, but I don't think it works for all countries and registration is needed, probably with verification, so no thank you.
Only supported countries for now are Unites States, Belgium, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.

Much more interesting update is P2P non-KYC worldwide crypto buy provided by HodlHodl with new Trezor Suite v22.10.3.
I think they should also add option to sell Bitcoin with HodlHodl.

I doubt we'll see any better prices by that time if they're giving 15% off now. They might add some offers about buying two, and getting the third one for half, or maybe give free silicon cases instead, but more than 15% off? I don't see it happening.

Trezor is working on that new secure element that will be integrated with their future hardware wallets. If they are considering to eventually retire the old Model One when the new devices hit the market, we might be seeing bigger discounts for Model One until the supply runs out. This is just speculation, of course.

A 20% discount (for Black Friday) is quite possible and it will be a little more profitable than 15%. In the last 2 years (2020 and 2021), Trezor made a 20% discount for its customers on Black Friday.

Here are links to information about it:
https://www.cryptocurrencyposters.com/trezor-black-friday-cyber-monday/
https://blog.trezor.io/trezor-black-friday-deals-2021-6550e15305ac

It is difficult to say whether there will be a similar discount this year, because there was one year (I don’t remember exactly) when Trezor and their competitor represented by Ledger didn't make any Black Friday discounts for their products at all. If I'm not mistaken, this was one of the years of a deep bearish trend. So, either be content with a 15% discount, or wait for a 20% discount in 1 month if it is not canceled.

In my opinion, 15% is not bad at all if you are going to spend money on a HW device in the near future.

I am not saying it's going to get bigger discount, but it's still much better than what we had previous season, if someone remember them offering discounts for silicone cases and trezor accessories  Roll Eyes
Yeah I know it was chip shortage and all that crap, but better don't offer any discount in situation like that.

New Trezor model will probably appear in this time next year, and that is my optimistic prognosis, if world economy don't collapse until them, and full production maybe starts in early 2024.
That doesn't mean they should follow steps of bad competition and retire devices all the time like old socks.
Maybe upgrading Trezor One with bigger memory (like in model T) would be better option to keep it alive, affordable and functional in future.

There is nothing wrong with cooperation with btcdirect, but as I understand it only brings "buy" option inside the application. I would prefer to see a better conditions for Trezor users (spread). Otherwise why not to buy from them directly?
And again, if someone is afraid of leaks, the task to check the code how they send buy request, if they collect data how much you bought, when. Does btcdirect knows you are Trezor user? etc etc

That wouldn't be bad since the old Trezor model doesn't have the hardware strength to cope with certain coins and can't support them. But a hardware upgrade would certainly affect the price, which could then go above €100 maybe.

I am sure Trezor takes a cut in some way. I remember when Ledger introduced a similar partnership with a crypto company and we compared the rates offered through Ledger Live against what was offered on the official site. The spread was always worse in Ledger Live for the exact same trading pair compared to what you could get on the official exchange. These kind of partnerships are about additional revenue for the manufacturers after all.

Some of us here don't consider the "secure element" an improvement but just the opposite.  Sure in theory SECURE sounds great, but that comes with closed source and users having to trust what is going on inside the element all beyond our scrutiny.  That is a pass for me anyway as far as my preference!!

The secure elements we find in today's hardware wallets are closed-source, but Trezor and their partners are trying to change that. I guess they realized early on that 100% open-source isn't going to be possible, so the wording they used in some of their public announcements was "as open-source as possible". It's going to be interesting to see how Wallet Scrutiny and other parties classify the new type of wallets once they eventually come out.

So, if you are in the EU, the Trezor One will now cost you around €70, while Trezor T is approximately €220.

And I still remember that a few years ago, some complained that $100 was a price they were not ready to pay to buy such a device. I haven't followed how much the price of the T model has changed since it appeared on the market, but it costs about $130 more than the Ledger X that I bought in 2019. Security is never expensive, but this price seems a bit excessive to me, even from an EU perspective, and here we are talking about the price with a discount...

I wonder how many people from various poor countries of the world have no chance to buy something like this because they have to work for several months to earn money for such an HW. On the other hand, some will say that they don't need HW, given that they can't even afford big investments.

Re: hardware wallet pricing.
I have no internal information about margins of different vendors, but model T can be expected to be supported for longer, has more coins that need to be actively maintained, and hasn't sold as many units as model One. These are some reasons for which I can understand a higher price.

Personally, I believe even 200€ or more for a Bitcoin-only device (less maintenance of coins, smaller codebase, less potential for bugs...) can be worth it.

Basically, with any such device, you're buying a signer with secure storage of your seed and a pretty good level of security against software and hardware attacks. If you don't need this convenience, you can very securely store your seed on paper in multiple physically secure locations.
You don't really pay for the security (as you said, it can be achieved for much less), but for convenient security. Having access to your coins from a mobile device on the go, without exposing the keys to software or prying eyes, for example.

Unfortunately, people from financially weaker countries can't afford a lot of things, but by giving up some convenience, they can still use Bitcoin very securely for cheap.

After some quick research using Wayback Machine, I managed to gather some data.

The Model T was released in February 2018.
- An achieve from June 2018 shows a price of €149.
- A second achieve from November 2019 shows the same price.
- In December 2020, the price was up to €180.
- In October 2021, an achieve shows €164. So, the price went down for some reason.
- And the last one I checked was April 2022 with a price of €249.

I was talking about secure element that is in development by Trezor with their project Tropic Square, and that is going to be most open source secure element so far, but I hope others will follow.
I do agree with you that closed source wallets are basically black box and nobody knows what is happening inside, but same thing is already used everywhere in banking, smartphones, etc. so we don't have anything better.

Personally, I believe even 200€ or more for a Bitcoin-only device (less maintenance of coins, smaller codebase, less potential for bugs...) can be worth it.
How about paying 10 times less and you still have functional open source Bitcoin signing device?  Read more about it soon Wink
For me 200€ is a lot of money for currently available hardware wallets, except maybe Passport, but that is borderline price, I would certainly buy it again for presale offered price.

Unfortunately, people from financially weaker countries can't afford a lot of things, but by giving up some convenience, they can still use Bitcoin very securely for cheap.
There might be solution for them, but they should keep their old mobile phones and not throw it away in garbage.
ESP32 devices are very cheap and now it's possible to make Bitcoin airgapped signing device for dirt cheap.

You can do cool stuff with generic, off-the-shelf microcontroller dev boards, but they're just not made for security like a hardware wallet is. It's often trivial to read out the flash storage, alter or even reflash the firmware and similar, since that's what they're basically made for.
I guess it is still better than a hot wallet and more convenient than a paper seed; just make sure to safeguard those things at all times.

But who knows, maybe really secure, cheap to acquire, microcontroller boards will emerge and really give hardware wallets a run for their money.

-snip-

I doubt we'll see any better prices by that time if they're giving 15% off now. They might add some offers about buying two, and getting the third one for half, or maybe give free silicon cases instead, but more than 15% off? I don't see it happening.

Since Trezor business model runs on their sales of hardware rather than their sales of software (their software is free and open, as it is supposed to be), it kind of makes sense they need to profit off their wallets.

Still, I am holding onto the hope their model T could decrease in retail price once their new generation of cold wallets gets released to the market, perhaps it is a bit foolish of me to think that way though. My pessimistic place as consumer even led me to think this 15% off was "good" in comparison to the lack of offers last year.   Sad

It's not foolish. I am thinking the same thing. It's to be expected in all niches (not just hardware wallets) that whenever a new model of a brand comes out, the price decreases for the older models. Since Trezor T is a good wallet (but overpriced), many could jump at the chance to get it once the prices drop after the release of the new-generation of their hardware wallets. But there are no signs that this could happen soon, therefore, patience is required.

Suppose a trezor releases a new model of a hardware wallet. What discount do you think the manufacturer will sell it at? 90%, 75%, 50%, 25%? These are too unrealistic and fantastic figures. It may turn out to be 15% -20% more realistic, that is, exactly the discount that you can usually get during Black Friday or now. Well, maybe a little more. So what am I on about? And to the fact that if there is already a discount, then it is naive to wait for an even greater discount, believing that it will be much more significant than the current one. Moreover, it is not known when and whether there will be this discount. Why is the current discount dissatisfied, if model T is your preference?

I am not sure if this is a rhetorical question or if you are asking me directly? I am not looking for a new hardware wallet currently, but if I was, a Trezor would be on top of my candidates list. I was just complimenting the device, not expressing a desire to purchase it right now. Because of its design flaws and unfixable vulnerabilities, I don't think it's worth close to $250. It's still an excellent product that deserves its place on the podium among the winners.

The scenario I have in mind is Trezor launching their new generation to the market, that only would drop the price about 5-15%, because people would start also buying the new device over the model one and T. Added to this drop in the price I would also expect other chances to buy a model T with seasonal offer, let us say 10-15%.
So in the case it would be a discount of 30% and in the worst case it would be around 15%. I am not sure if these are realistic expectations, I would like a Model T but I am not in a rush to get one, I can wait for better prices.

The price of Bitcoin could also increase much leading people to buy more HWs, increasing demand and messing my estimations.

Ok, I understand your position. May I also ask why you are choosing model T, not One? What is it connected with?

That's right, there is a chance that the new model will attract buyers, leaving the old model with low sales. Then, this would be an ideal time to buy in terms of the price, which will have to drop due to low demand. There are many factors that can influence a Trezor's decision about discounts and prices for their devices. Including demand for HWs during the rise of bitcoin. A bear market is the best time for this.

Regarding discounts: let's see if Trezor will make discounts for their devices on Black Friday. Purely out of curiosity. It seems to me that 2 discounts in a row with an interval of less than 1 month looks too very good.

It sounds pretty good but it is unlikely, in my opinion.
Specially after this disaster we are witnessing with the FTX exchange, it is possible that some people will move their funds out exchanges just in case, prompting an increase of demand for hardware wallets from both Trezor and Ledger, if this is the case these companies would see no reason to offer more discounts this next black friday.

I would expect Trezor to keep a 15% or offer packs of Hardware wallets together with their silicone cases. Let us see...

Trezor is calling the upcoming Black Friday event the biggest Black Friday sale ever! They might be planning something special. Something is telling me that we are going to see even bigger discounts than the 15% the company organized at the beginning of November. Whatever it is, the promotion begins on 21 November and will last until 27 November!

I expect other hardware wallet providers to do the same thing, because of what has been going on with FTX.
It is a great opportunity for them to profit from this unpleasant situation. It all began with this new Proof of Reserve nonsense, where other centralized exchanges are trying to prove how much better they are than FTX. And with the upcoming Black Friday, Christmas, and the New Year, we will surely see an attempt by hardware wallet manufacturers to further increase their userbases as well. And what better way to acquire new users than to offer good discounts on your products followed by the usual "not your keys, not your coins" slogans? Not that it isn't true, but they are and will take full advantage of the situation.

Something is telling me that we are going to see even bigger discounts than the 15% the company organized at the beginning of November.
I also have the same feeling [in the previous three years, they gave bigger discounts (2019 = 30%, 2020 = 20% and 2021 = 20% but not for the HWs)], but at the same time, I'm wondering how could they afford to give bigger discounts while there are still ongoing issues with chip shortages?!

The chip shortage might not be that big of a problem as it was during the COVID times. I am pretty sure that crypto users are already showing greater interest for popular hardware wallet brands already. I think Ledger said somewhere they are already onboarding more people than usual since the FTX fiasco. I have no reason to think Trezor isn't also experiencing the same. And the companies might be willing to loss some profits short-term by offering cheaper products to gain more customers.

They probably loaded up with microchips when they were available for cheaper prices, and chip shortage is not so severe as it was few months ago or last year,
than they increased device prices a lot after that, so now they can afford to offer bigger discounts.
As much as I appreciate was Trezor has done for hardware wallets and overall Bitcoin industry, I wouldn't buy any of their devices now, even with big discounts.
I would still use them if I receive them for free, but I think there are better options on the market right now.

I think I had an unrealistic expectation that once the chip shortage issue settles, they'd revert prices to the pre-covid phase.
- At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Model R with a price tag of $350+ on its launch date!

I wouldn't buy any of their devices now, even with big discounts.

Even if you didn't own the Model One?
If we got a promo price of around €170-€200 for the upcoming Black Friday event (I doubt we will), I would consider getting a Trezor Model T. With a good passphrase and a secret code stored on a SD card, we can mitigate the hardware vulnerability of the device and make it secure enough. Together with Ledger, Trezor is the oldest and most popular brand. I have more trust in them than in the newer manufacturers on the block. The Foundation Passport is appealing to me personally if it wasn't for its young age.

Indeed, FTX exchange incident will prompt many users to change their crypto storage strategy  and move their assets to devices. I expect a surge in sales of devices from well-known brands, like trezor and ledger.

They already had a 15% discount recently, and if they scream about the biggest Black Friday sale ever!, then they are unlikely to limit themselves to a bonus silicone case. It looks like they are preparing a unique offer for their customers this time. Trezor has one main competitor (Ledger is doing better with marketing) who will also be trying to get new customers amid the events with the  FTX exchange and here trezor will need to try to beat them with something unusual.

I was checking Ledger's Twitter feed a few hours ago to see if they announced anything for Black Friday (nothing yet), and I came across a tweet where they said they have already recorded a 7x increase in sales in the days following the FTX drama. They are also claiming their support is overwhelmed with inquiries about hardware wallets and stuff like that. They seem to be suggesting that some of the server issues that dkbit98 was talking about in Ledger Server Problems could be a result of the unexpected increase of new users all coming in at the same time. If that's the case, maybe it's time to consider greater server capacity.

It seems I was wrong and Satoshilabs is indeed planing to drop some Black Friday offers this year.
There are not details given whatsoever yet, neither on their Reddit nor on the webpage, there must be some update soon.

They are marketing this as their "biggest" Black friday offer to date, my expectations are up.

Any thoughts? I hope they are not hyping up people just to present a 10% off.

Satoshilabs has already announced this event and it will be bad for their reputation if they cancel it. If they offer a 10% discount, this will also go unnoticed by their users. Recently there was a 15% discount, and against this background, 10% will definitely not look like the "biggest discount" and dissatisfied ones will appear. Which no firm wants to allow. Today is already November 21 and it would be time for them to announce what discounts trezor will offer, otherwise why were these loud statements needed. We should probably find out soon.

According to this article, the sale is live (up to 30%): https://blog.trezor.io/black-friday-sale-begins-752274134b2d

Apparently, you can get the Trezor One model for under 50$ but so far, I don't see anything. Maybe they released the blog article before applying the discounts.

Yeah the Black Friday deals haven't gone live yet. There is a paragraph under the first image in the blog post that says the prices on the Trezor shop will be updated in the next couple of hours.
A Trezor One for below 50$ is an excellent deal if you ask me. Let's see if the Trezor T will go below $200 with a discount...

This is indeed the case, and 30% discount is confirmed by the tweet:

"🎁 Trezor’s biggest Black Friday sale ever!

Up to 30% off hardware wallets and accessories.
Offers last till November 28."

Link to source: https://twitter.com/Trezor/status/1594730551780737025?cxt=HHwWgoDUtZq_z6EsAAAA

But there is a small problem:

Did the servers not withstand the influx of new customers. It seems that against the backdrop of the latest events in the industry, HW device sellers will reap a very good "harvest".

Let's see if the Trezor T will go below $200 with a discount...

I just checked and I can confirm they are selling the Trezor model T for 181$, not bad to be honest.
The only problem (as mentioned before) is the fact that the webpage is having problems because of the people getting onto this offer. they even had to enable the DDoS protection.
I wonder if Trezor costumer service will able to handle this influx of costumers, in situations like this one they could get overwhelmed.

But there is a small problem:
Did the servers not withstand the influx of new customers. It seems that against the backdrop of the latest events in the industry, HW device sellers will reap a very good "harvest".
Damn it. This must all be because of Ledger and their crappy partnership with FTX that is causing these problems with Trezor's website and servers. I am sure dkbit98 will fill us in. Pun intended. Wink
It wasn't working for me before either, but now it's up and running again.

I just checked and I can confirm they are selling the Trezor model T for 181$, not bad to be honest.
I guess that depends where you are in the world. If you want to ship it to a country in the EU, you are looking at prices of €220-€230. The price you see is probably without VAT (non-EU, Asian, American countries). You have to take that into consideration depending on how much VAT you are required to pay and how big the amount is that doesn't require paying any duties in your country.

They are marketing this as their "biggest" Black friday offer to date, my expectations are up.
Any thoughts?
Nobody can beat this year Black Friday offer for Keystone hardware wallet, that is up to 40% discount!
Trezor is also offering very good deals, but I said before that I am waiting to see new device they release with secure element and I am  not purchasing anything from Trezor until then.
However, if someone doesn't have much money and still want's to purchase decent hardware wallet, Trezor One is still usable and ok for current BF price.

I just checked and I can confirm they are selling the Trezor model T for 181$, not bad to be honest.
Still expensive for me.
Passport hardware wallet is a bit more expensive but it's way better than Trezor Model T.
Even Coldcard and Keystone are better, and they are currently much cheaper.
Jade hardware wallet could also be considered, it's going to be airgapped soon with firmware update, and it's around $40 to $50.

True, I forgot they adjust the prices according to one's location.

It has been so long since the mentioned the new model and still they have not shown anything about it, I think. Makes me feel pesimistic on seeing the new model anytime soon, specially because Satoshilabs is the kind of company that likes to show their advances and products, I have found some pictures on internet posted by them of their advances on model one and model T prototypes.

It also worries me the features of the new model, besides the TropicSquare chips, what other added advantages this model would have over Model T and One, I wonder. There must be something which drive people to buy it, otherwise they may not sell as much as they expect.

Trezor Model T and Model One both suffer from an unfixable design flaw allowing a knowledgeable individual to extract the seed with relatively cheap hardware. I think Ledger's security team was the first that pointed that out, of course without releasing any instructions or guides for an attack. Trezor doesn't have a secure element.

Since this can't be fixed with the current devices, they are developing a new secure element component that will be part of a future hardware wallet of theirs. This new chip will be as open-source as possible and fix the previously mentioned design flaws. I think that alone is quite a nice update, although you would need physical access to a Trezor to be able to manipulate it and extract sensitive information. A strong passphrase and a secure code stored on a micro SD card are excellent ways to mitigate the hardware vulnerabilities of the two devices.

SatoshiLabs can't stop luring new customers. One discount promotion is replaced by another: instead of a 15% discount, now free shipping. Only 1 day left until the end of the Christmas gift.

Apparently, this will be the last bonus to trezor buyers this year.

Did they confirm that somewhere in their official channels or is it your personal opinion? Something tells me they will have some type of promotion for New Years Eve as well. They have been onboarding many new customers ever since the problems with centralized platforms began last month and can surely afford another discount if they wanted to.

This is just my personal guess based on the wording on their twitter:  "This Christmas, give your loved ones security", "Your perfect Christmas gift".
https://twitter.com/Trezor/status/1600181921681506307?cxt=HHwWhoCgndm-_rQsAAAA

If during this action there was a mention of Christmas and a Christmas gift, then in my opinion, the probability of using this event for promotional purposes tends to zero. Agree, 2 discount promotions dedicated to the same holiday, this is unlikely.

I can't say for sure, but here are my guesses. There are only a couple of weeks left until the end of the year - so let's check my guesses.

It is the last discount that year or not, the promo is a bit disappointing IMHO. I do not think free delivery would change the total cost enough to convince someone to buy Trezor just because of that.
Personally I do not understand why the prices are so high, if the price for One I may understand, the price for T is for me unacceptable. I would say shipping costs are already included in the base price - maybe it would be a better strategy for them : "you pay for device, we deliver it for free".

I assume this "free delivery" deal will be the last one of this year. I guess it is okey after the up 30% they gave in November, judging by the fact their webpage was non-responsive for several days I would say their previous offer was a success.
Satoshilabs may have no incentive to offer Christmas offers this year because of that, I recall last year they gave a discount for the purchase of two Trezor One.

Also, I hope they finally reveal their new generation of wallets this incoming 2023, they are staying behind in comparison to Ledger.

The promotional prices will last until 21 May.

the dirty campaign has started quickly, it looks like they will try to attract people who might replace Ledger wallet.

We can now say that Trezor is still in a much better position compared to Ledger:

  • You will be careful before you install any future firmware updates or build firmware from reproducible builds and check everything in the code.
  • They still need to know they need the PIN if they suddenly decide to install the firmware without your permission so you have the option to stop using any future updates like what happened with Ledger Recovery.
  • Don't update the firmware (unless there was a private key bug)

With all these discounts, however, I recommend airgapped, electrum cold storage for my bitcoins instead of wasting my money in a new hardware wallet.

It is not known how long this "much better position compared to Ledger" will last.

It looks like these two biggest hardware wallet companies are now competing to see who screwed up the most.

I used to rejoice at the news about discounts, which allowed to purchase a device at a discount. Admit it, it's always nice to buy a little cheaper than full price, if possible. But now there are doubts whether it is worth buying from these manufacturers for the sake of saving 10-15% of the cost. It may be better to buy from other companies that offer really reliable devices and don't try to fool their customers with dubious collaborations (Trezor) and recovery functions (Ledger).

It may be better to buy from other companies that offer really reliable devices and don't try to fool their customers with dubious collaborations (Trezor) and recovery functions (Ledger).

What do you mean by "dubious collaborations" is this what you are refer for Trezor and Wasabi Collaboration Enhances Bitcoin Privacy with CoinJoin Feature?
It is related to privacy and not the security of your bitcoins.

Security is in ensuring that the private key is generated in a way that does not and will not connect to the Internet or that it is shared in one way or another with third parties, something that has not happened in Trezor.

In terms of privacy, if we take electrum wallet as an example, it is bad for privacy, as some electrum servers are managed by Chainalysis.

Chainalysis is the same company that does blockchain analysis with wasabiwallet and they're both trying to make privacy with CoinJoin questionable.

“The downside to this design is that when the user wallet connects to the network, a variety of information is revealed - the user’s IP address, the full set of addresses in the wallet (used and unused) and the version of the wallet software,” according to the slide deck. “Chainalysis runs a series of nodes on the Bitcoin network ... and if a user connects to one of our nodes, we receive the above information.”

Unless you're running a full node through Tor, relying on third parties, including electrum wallet, gives you questionable privacy.

What do you mean by "dubious collaborations" is this what you are refer for Trezor and Wasabi Collaboration Enhances Bitcoin Privacy with CoinJoin Feature?
It is related to privacy and not the security of your bitcoins.
It might not be directly related to security, but it is still a massive issue that Trezor fund government sanctioned surveillance and censorship.

Security is in ensuring that the private key is generated in a way that does not and will not connect to the Internet or that it is shared in one way or another with third parties, something that has not happened in Trezor.
Note that all Trezor devices have an unfixable vulnerability which means your seed phrase can be extracted from the device. If you are worried about this on Ledger devices, you should be just as worried about it on Trezor devices.

Trezor and Ledger are both very poor choices of hardware wallet.

the dirty campaign has started quickly, it looks like they will try to attract people who might replace Ledger wallet.
I have the feeling this 15% Trezor discount came one day before the first information about the Ledger Recover feature started making headlines, am I right? They have had such discounts in the past, so it doesn't look like it's connected with Ledger shooting themselves in the foot to see what will happen.

We can now say that Trezor is still in a much better position compared to Ledger
I agree somewhat with that statement. I wouldn't say 'much better', but slightly better. Co-sharing your seed phrase with 3rd-parties is worse than holding hands with chain analysis companies and working together on censoring and investigating the history of your UTXOs.

I wonder if what Trezor and Ledger are doing is solely their hunger for profit or if they have grown big enough and the time has come to cut their wings. The way to do that is getting big companies involved who you can easily press to reveal sensitive information on request.
