Can anyone confirm if opendime wallet works through phone USB?

As you found yes. And you can generate an address and add funds. However, once you 'open' it by punching the hole (or breaking the tab on the originals) you now have a private key on an online device.
Probably not that big a security risk since once you open it you are probably moving the funds, but still something to think about.

Have a look at Satodime (https://satodime.io). It is similar to openDime, but with a smartcard form factor.
Since it has NFC connectivity, you can use it easily on a smartphone by tapping it to the back of the phone!
Currently there is an app for android, the iOS app will be released in a few weeks.
