A surprisingly strange move, although they are obviously targeting those potential customers who are looking for a device that supports altcoins. In that case, there should be a Bitcoin-only firmware version, just like with Trezor. I was honestly thinking about buying a Prime, but I think I'll stick with the Core.

As far as I can tell, sometime in early August they announced a Core update within a timeframe of 4–6 weeks.

All of their firmware releases are Bitcoin-only up until now. I don't own either of the two Passport devices but they have always been bitcoin-only. Legacy mode is optional and requires installing it manually. But the support for Legacy Mode is only available with firmware version 1.4, so you are kind of right. I can't comment on how much 'altcoin code' gets installed on the device by upgrading to firmware version 1.4.

In my view they intended to do this from the very beginning when they started developing KeyOS. Developing  OS from scratch involves significant time and human resources,  so such development would be nonsense just for one crypto coin, no matter what it's called,  Therefore, adding shitcoins is quite  expectable step from Foundation. I am not surprised.
