Lucky you, Gazeta!! I've been to Tenerife and Lanzarote, but not Gran Canaria. I planned to visit GC some months ago, but I had to cancel it temporarily because of my work.

I had to choose between Madeira, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. I understood there are not many activities for children in Madeira so I dropped that idea. Finally, I chose Gran Canaria over Tenerife because I saw it's warmer here hence a better sun tan ☺️

It's Spain, yes, but very far from the peninsula, the Canary Islands are in the African continent... a bit far from the Basque Country

I'm not sure about GC but in Tenerife the north is usually cloudy while the south is sunny, so you must be right that you have a better weather there.

Gazeta, take care! I've listened that there is a heat wave in Canarias right now (plus calima and moderate thunderstorm warning), although they usually have mild max temperatures of 20-25 degrees through all the year.

It seems that it will last until Wednesday: the perfect excuse to enjoy a few cold "cañitas"

I'm glad to hear that you're having such a good time ^^, yes, the North is usually cooler, I knew about Tenerife but it seems that in GC it is the same. Did you rent a car? car rental is very cheap in Canarias (Cicar worked for me) and the ability to roam the island freely greatly improves the experience.

I didn't rent a car... I wanted to be free to drink cañitas 😅 I never rented a car, in any vacation. But the trips I bought included transportation and for other (small) trips (like to various beaches) I took a taxi. Prices are acceptable... 5-20 EUR.

Now I am on my way to visit volcanos and in weekend I'll visit a beach with black sand. Never saw one before. Its name is Marañuelas, in Arguineguín area. Porf, maybe you heard of it...?

That is true. I don't know in other countries but in Spain we have very strict rules about not drinking when you're going to drive. I'm not sure if it's already in force, but the last update of that rule will/has lower/ed the limit so even one small beer would be beyond the limits of what's permitted.

I have heard of it, yes. It's not the only one with black sand, most beaches in Canarias have that volcanic origin, but in Marañuelas it seems to be specially dark.

There are others, in contrast, where the sand is golden: it's sand from the Sahara Desert and carried by the wind. The most famous one is Las Teresitas in Tenerife, but there are several like this throughout the archipelago.

I know only this beach with black sand and one more -- in Agaete, but that one is at 1.5h driving away from my hotel, while Marañuela is at 15 min drive ☺️ So I chose Marañuela. I am here right now, writing you while sitting on this black sand, which is just WOW! The ocean is so calm... there is no wave... and this beach is so small! Only 300m long and only 20 sun chairs... I am glad I caught one ☺️

Oh and I also found out that the name of the island does not come from canary birds, but from dogs! When the Romans came here they brought with them some huge dogs (as big as Argentinian dogs) and after they left, some dogs were left behind. Later, when the Spanish came, they found these huge dogs and named the island as Gran Canaria -- the island of big dogs. Gran means big, while can comes from the Latin canis, which means dog (n.b. -- câine, in Romanian). I would have never thought about that...

As about Tenerife, I understood there are not many activities for children, so I don't know if I'll go there too soon. However, next year I wish to visit Azore islands, which are even more in the middle of the ocean ☺️

As a curiosity, "dogs" are still also called "canes" apart from "perros" in Spanish, although the use of the former is in decline, and often used by poets, intellectuals or simply pedantic people.
