The best thing about the crypto world is the freedom of choice.
If your friend wants to use ETH or any other PoS altcoin, he is free to do so. Nobody is forcing him to use Bitcoin, if he doesn't like it.
PoW and PoS have their pros and cons, I also think that PoW is better, but I won't be wasting my time trying to convince other people about the benefits of PoW. This is completely pointless. If somebody doesn't like Bitcoin/PoW, just let them continue with their BS. Grin
Such arguments can end with only one sentence. "Why don't you use both?" Grin There's no problem diversifying your funds with both BTC and ETH. Nobody is saying that you could use only one or the other. Grin

According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

PoS is not just more centralized, but it also promotes the very things we've trying to get rid of in the global economy: the rich getting disproportionately richer, and the gap between the rich and the poor becoming wider. That's because the more Ethereum you already have, the more you can afford to stake, and the more you stake, the more you get in return. At least with PoW, miners aren't always or maybe even usually those who possess the biggest amounts of Bitcoin, even though to mine more, you still need to be able to afford more equipment. And I do think PoS is more 'energy efficient', but the energy consumption is naturally growing anyway, so we should focus on better sources of this energy rather than on trying to consume less energy.

Thanks for all your advice and sharing your knowledge.

Bitcoin is paired to USD but not pegged to it.
Oh, I see. I thought pegged and paired were the same. My bad. I'll let him know.

I hope it won't end up in physical contact.  Grin
Don't worry, it won't happen. We argue, and we share knowledge, and that's how we learn.

Each person has their own preference.  It is ok to have an exchange of idea and discuss it in a friendly way.  I can say you give a good points @OP but some of your arguments are lacking such as how you describe POW and POS, it could be better if you add the network security issue to strengthen your point of view.
Well, he's not into crypto that much and he knows less. So I tried to explain it easily so that he could understand. I will tell him more when I get the chance. Thanks for the article link.  Grin

Ask him to write down his reasons and I think we can counter every one of his reasons and prove that proof of stake does not work and has been proven by shitcoins before eth. Proof of work is not perfect because of the energy it uses but it is the best solution we have atm.
He's still learning. I'll let him know.

Rank by market capitalization does not distinguish one currency to be better than another. It is math and devs can use tricks to inflate the value their asset has. Price also does not show true value.
Totally agreed.  Cheesy

only the time will tell. But the improvements are necessary, and it will happen sooner or later.

Wow, thanks for explaining it like this. Very much appreciated.

Him: Bitcoin is old stuff, try ETH

This makes it sound like Bitcoin was released and no updates have been made since. You should have referred to it being at version 24 plus with developers constantly making improvements to this day.

Him: Ethereum is better now in terms of sustainability.

In terms of energy? Sure. In terms of economic stability? I don't think so. I would say that Bitcoin is healthier and more sustainable economically than Ethereum.

"horsepower"? If he is short-handing to say "electricity" or "hash rate" then he isn't very good at shortening his sentences with more useful words.. If he doesn't know what hash rate is then that says enough as to how valid his opinion is.
He was trying to say the calculation power, and energy consumption, I think. I got the point, so it's ok.

At the very last discussion, you should tell him that why he are fearful of centralized banks, pick cryptocurrency as alternative but at the end he pick a centralized cryptocurrency like Ethereum.

It would be my ending words, may last effort to convince him.
I wasn't trying to convince him. Just sharing our own opinion and learn from each other.

It also depends on the responses you are giving if you are aiming to inform or change opinion. The way the OP went about it could have definitely been better. The argument of POW versus POS is simple, at least to me. You just need to convey the facts in an easy to digest and indisputable way.
Well I lack in knowledge too. So I am here asking for your help. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

each person has their own preferences, we should only argue for fun, not force them to believe what we say or we have to believe them.
Yeah, that's why I have never forced him and just share what I know. Now it's up to him to decide.

If people are really care with energy, they shouldn't live in modern lifestyle instead they need to back to live with primitive lifestyle.
you got a good point there. Agreed.

The best thing about the crypto world is the freedom of choice.

Good idea. Why not use both and learn it by yourself? I was trying to warn him about the centralized shit that comes with POS. Now it's his choice.

Once he understands this, he will choose the right one for sure. In this case, that's POW/Bitcoin

I guess I have replied to everyone. Thanks to all for giving your time in order to educate us.
