So one day, when he had gambled away all of his salary for the month while the month was still very young, he came to me and asked me to borrow him some money, but i refused knowing fully well he did nothing good with the salary we both collected like a week ago, aside gambling, i told him i cant lend him any money since i am very sure that he has gambled away all his salary, he started begging me and later on, i asked him why can't he just stop gambling since he can see that gambling is not helping him financially, he then opened up to me that several a times he has tried to stop, but he only succeeded not to gamble when he is completely broke, but whenever money enters his hand, he will be feeling so restless until he steps out and engage himself in a gambling activity.

He was battling with this addiction until i traveled out and we were no longer communicating, really hope he is free from that addiction by now, since it's been several years i haven't spoken with him, though we are friends on Facebook and i constantly see his posts from time to time.

An addiction, irrespective of what the habit is, isn’t good. And I think you’re right. It’s almost like a spell that won’t allow one to think rationally until there is no more money left to feed the habit. And when your funds are exhausted, borrowing is what comes to mind.
For an addict, It’s a never ending cycle and like you noted, a helpless situation. For someone having a steady income from work and unfortunately develops an addiction, it won’t be long before the income that was previously enough to meet basic needs with some left for savings will suddenly become never enough.

I have read several people to compare gambling addiction to be "like drug" or "like a drug", some stuff like it. I have never been a user of illegal substances and I have never fallen into gambling addiction (though, I know how it feels to get hooked while gambling), but I believe it is a mistake from us to compare a behavioral dependence to a physiological dependence produced by a substance. Those that are dealing with it should do it with the aim of not going to the extent that they will have hard. It's hard to get into this situation but when someone wants to quit and they're already addicted, the problem starts from there.
