...
Image size reducing (either by dimensions or recompression) are a thing. Sounds to me a lot like you're too lazy to use appropriate camera settings or such a size reducing app on your mobile, aren't you? And if the upper limit were lifted, everyone else has to download larger sized images for the purpose of nothing. C'mon, seriously?

Now that you said it, I do realize I have never changed any exporting setting from my lightroom app! There is indeed an option to change the quality (not sure whether it would reduce size). As for the camera app, everything is on default, didn't touch anything there...

Thanks for clarifying! I'll keep it in mind the next time I try tp upload anything! Smiley

The forum's image proxy doesn't allow larger images.

snip

The only change I'd like to see is adding .webp support, but that's something only theymos can add.

Ah I get it! I didn't knew it was due to the forum's restrictions! I thought, he set that 2.5 MB limit for some other reason!

PNG, JPG seemed fine! Why webp again?

EDIT: Someone make a post, so that in a few days we can release the statistics, "no consecutive posts"...
Smiley

I would love to have a resizer embedded to the main page. Right now I go to talkimg.com, upload my huge image, then paste the bbcode into bitcointalk and change the width/height to 50% or so. It would be better if I could just provide the width I want and the image is resized->uploaded at once, saving space on your servers and bandwidth when people see my image.
i dont know if was said before , but,  that already has. it just doesn't accept image larger than 2.5mb (!image is too big!) before upload to do an resize, .... But if it accepted so that it could resize on its own site it would be much better.

Webp files should be smaller (at the same quality). Browsers support it already, so the forum's image proxy is the only thing stopping them.

Yeah, i never thought about this here. I always use .webp in my projects since it's is soo light to save, although it's not that very popular for internet users, theymos should consider adding this image file type to forum's proxy. It also supports animation just like .gif and .apng.

I am not sure if all image viewer software is fully supporting webp images, but this was never my favorite image format.
There are some usersripts that easily enable downloading all webp images into jpg, png or other file formats with a simple right click.
Maybe something similar can be used for TalkImg but in reversed way.

.... But if it accepted so that it could resize on its own site it would be much better.
Is the problem you were having still there or has it been resolved?
No, I had no problem. I just think it would be easier if when someone uses the site to upload, or also take a photo directly from the site, and the image is larger than 2.5MB, automatically the image is redimensioned to less than.2.5, so that the user could resize it to the size he wanted and then he could upload it and not be necessary to use another site to resize and only then be able to go to Talkimg to be able to upload., But I didn't have a problem and I don't see it as a problem either, since it's explicit on the site that it doesn't support IMG greater than 2.5..... But maybe the part where you can use it to take a photo directly from the site needs to be an adjustment for the photo not to come out with more than 2.5mb.
Personally for me it's excellent the way it is!,because just knowing that it will not be takes care of the server over time. It's great..

 Statistics  August 2025____________________
Another consistent month we had at TalkImg, in which I thank everyone who uses and trusts this project. I'd like to take advantage of this month's report to review some points about the platform, features, and future ideas, while also clarifying some issues.

Why are only images up to 2.5MB accepted?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions, with a very simple answer: BitcoinTalk does not accept images larger than 2.5MB. TalkImg could accept larger images, but they wouldn't work on the forum. Since this project was designed for the forum, we followed the forum rules to make it simpler and more practical for everyone. Furthermore, based on my long experience using online images (especially galleries), I can guarantee that in 90% of cases it is completely unnecessary to have images larger than 2.5MB (and this is already very generous), so for real use on the forum, I don't see the need for images with higher resolutions.

Why doesn't TalkImg do the conversion at the time of upload?
First of all, out of respect for the user! Editing images without their consent (ok, they would accept it being done, but...) I think it was unethical. I think the user should be the one to edit/motivate their images. But, there is another very important reason: quality/form of resizing/compression. Web-based resizing/compression tools, while good, aren't very effective (unless you use a dedicated platform). These tools use methods that can significantly degrade image quality, resulting in a result far from what the user desires. This is because there are many different types of images and methods of storing them, making web tools less efficient than other (even simpler) software on computers or mobile devices.

Since I highly value image quality (it's possible to achieve quality below 2.5MB), I believe each user should be free to compress as they see fit. While I always recommend using dedicated software rather than web-based tools, there are good web-based tools for this, as you can find in my guide: Best practices for using images on the forum/web. Or if you prefer, you can use TalkImg's compression tool, which will work in most cases and automatically upload the image and provide the BBCode code for use: https://zip.talkimg.com/

TalkImg could generate a thumbnail and then the user could use that image on the forum.
TalkImg already does this. The question is: how many users would remember and use it? You could issue a warning that the image is larger than 2.5MB to use the thumbnail's BBCode, but I think most people wouldn't notice. They'd only notice it after posting and seeing the image with the error, potentially confusing you and not realizing what's going on. Our goal is to be simple and practical; doing so wasn't practical. Therefore, it's preferable to establish a 2.5MB limit as a baseline.

So, is it possible to simplify this process even further?
Yes, it's possible, and that's my goal. I intend to make improvements to the Zip tool to make it a more enjoyable experience. Perhaps, we will integrate this tool into the main platform, so that this entire experience occurs at the time of upload with the user's authorization. But first I have to make sure zip works more efficiently, so I can deploy it to the main platform. This is in the plans, and news on this topic may probably emerge next year.

Why doesn't Talking accept webp?
It supports it, but the forum doesn't. Should it support it? Honestly, I'm divided. While on the one hand it is a viable and high-quality type of image, on the other hand it is not compatible in all scenarios. It's not enough for the forum proxy to accept WebP; users' browsers must also be compatible. Personally, I think JPG or PNG (which everyone accepts) is more universal than WebP, which some may not accept (perhaps most do, but we don't know which browser each user uses). So, to ensure everyone can see the images on the forum, I prefer using universal file types.

What other features does TalkImg currently have?
In addition to the zip tool, you can upload multiple images at the same time. If the image is within the limits (2.5MB) you can still do a little editing. Just last month we talked about the possibility of copying an image from another website you are visiting and pasting it directly into TalkImg. Privacy is guaranteed by deleting all EXIF data from images. Backups are made weekly and saved offline. We may use a sig to promote TalkIng. You can still use the add-on and script created by TryNinja. If you still need to migrate images from other services to TalkImg, LoyceV can help. Among many other things that are linked to TalkImg.

Here are the numbers for the month:

Number of uploads in the month:
7 541 (+577 that in the last month)

Total disk space in the month:
2.19GB (+0.28 that in the last month)
Number of visits to the talkimg.com website in the month: 47 026*
Estimated number of times images were viewed on the forum in the month (hits): 2 792 539*
 Bandwidth in the month: 138.55GB*
*This data may not represent total/real numbers, because of Cloudflare.

The most important thing is really the initial topic. The other posts are just informative. Some translation OPs only post statistics to share the progress of the project. So don't worry about what's left behind.  Wink

Just a thought: if you post statistics in a graph that you update each month, the translated topics can include it without having to manually update it monthly. But you'll need an image that you edit monthly without changing the URL, which kinda goes against what TalkImg stands for....

Ok, I just translated last post, which is nicely packed with information about the project. I guess that will be enough to keep local board informed about the projects progress and bump a topic a little bit.

This is good idea to automate the posts a little bit, but I don't get why it is against TalkImg policy?

Usually images can't be edited.

Of course, you could create a picture of the statistics, and change it every month.

But this would fail to create a history of the project, as well as distort the idea that a published image is to remain forever on the forum.

That's why I prefer to keep it this way. I'd like to thank the translators who publish statistics in their translation threads. They're not obligated to do so, but I appreciate it when they do.

...snip...

Dear joker_josue, I encountered some weird repeating bug yesterday, so I thought why not I let you know! Long story short, I was trying to upload some images using the zip tool, everything went smooth! But when I made the preview I was getting the bitcointalk proxy error! I tried re uploading that image but again same error! Later I tried to view the image without bbcodes and it works! I had uploaded two more images along with that one. Those two worked! But this particular one, didn't (https://talkimg.com/images/2025/09/13/UCG1W2.jpeg), not sure what happened!

Seems like the image is 3 MB, higher than the forum's 2.5 MB limit:

Which size did the zip tool say it had?

I saved the same image, tried the zip tool and it said:

Code:
Tried quality 80: 2347.6 KB

The image still doesn't load:

3 MB as well, according to Chrome's network tab.

The ZIP tool is a beta/test version of what you want to achieve. Therefore, errors may occur during the compression process.

In fact, it shouldn't have allowed the upload, but for some reason the system calculated that the image was smaller than 2.5MB, but after it was uploaded it turned out to be larger.

This will be another bug to fix, so I appreciate the feedback.

Yeah! The first image actually turned out to be double the accepted size limit, around 6.16 MB, LOL, no wonder it wasnt working properly. On the other hand, the second one is only about 2.58 MB, a little above the accepted size limits. So, I guess this clears up the mystery behind the image proxy error.

Always happy to help out...  Cheesy

Anyone else having issues to upload the images via talkimg? It was working fine for me up until 2 hours ago, when I started getting this below. I tried different images ofc, and always getting the same result.
