As of now the old domain seems to be redirecting to the new one though I have to agree with you that, as soon as the old one expires, someone malicious is most like going to acquire it and use it to perform clone/phishing scam attacks.
We have seen this kind of thing before. I don't know what it takes, but they should just retain the old domain name as well for safety reasons.
