If russia Will build military bases and equipment in Mexico or close to USA borders  
Let's say russia will start nuclear then nato can take that easy to in russia with full power and arrest nuclear starters so russia should see that situation yes russia might can send one rocket out but then the usa nato foces could be in russia land in 30 min.
So russia want to be equal then Putin should build his bases in Mexico or near by USA lol i doubt that USA will let that thing happening.
Even about UK russia should build his military bases in ireland or near by netherland lol but nobody don't let russia to do that.
So Putin should keep quiet because NATO is near by his border but no russian military forces near by UK USA so what can stop nato forces to go in russia and just take over that country or shot and blow up there everything, nothing right so in chess game russia king is in check soon bad opening in this game there is no way russia can Do anything.

The US clearly has more allies than Russia, and if there's any escalation between the two countries, Russia, will definitely suffer more, they know this fact, and that is probably why their war with Ukraine, is still ongoing, because Ukraine, is an American ally, and it means another strong American base near Russia. America and Russia, have always flexed muscles as far as I can remember, but as it looks today, America, is having an upper hand against Russia.

it's not a matter of whose base is closest, but a matter of whose military is the strongest. so far the us has the strongest military power in the world, even china doesn't dare mess with the us. i am not exaggerating us military strength, but it is a fact, even if we look at the combat equipment and fleet that the us has, there is still much more hidden and under development. so we don't underestimate the strength of the us and put russia on a par with them, even if russian bases surround the us (which is also quite unlikely).

The military bases I believe, are supposed to be used as a tool to reinforce the power of a country overseas during period of peace, after the war period is done, or at least that is how I have noticed the United States to with their bases all around the world. They won't put a military base in Ukraine and if they wanted to, they lose the chances to reinforce Ukraine when they could... Before the Russian invasion.
Also, even though the United States seems to have more allies internstionally, Russia tries instead to align itself with China and North Korea, which are countries which also happen to hold nuclear weapons, even if they did not, China is one of the biggest military and civilian manufacturers on the planet, so even though it would seem Russia is alone, the Kremlin still has much backing for the years to come, even after all the western brands and investors decided to leave the country.
