A possible solution for broken images on the forum.

I have come across a lot of informative threads on This forum with a lot of important information about the crypto space especially Bitcoin.Over the years a lot of these threads have  been  created of which most of them were guides amongst many other categories like updates or analysis data.however it was so unfortunate that some of these threads were created during the period when imgur was used to upload images on the forum and due to the imgur server problem on  the forum, most of these images turned out to be broken.
Although TalkImg was used as a replacement for imgur most of these old images were still left broken making some of these old threads lose their simplicity as those images served as a form of additional information or illustration in these threads.
 
Ever since I frequently began coming across these threads with broken images two questions have always been on my mind which are;

• What caused imgur crash?
• Is there a way to fix these broken images?

With respect to the second I have a suggestion in mind on fixing these broken images however I believe it would require collective efforts for it's proper effect.My suggestion goes like this;
Since these broken images still have their links in the threads, these links can be taken and used to download the the original images from imgur. After which they can then be re uploaded to TalkImg.these newly uploaded links can then be sent to Ops to update the respective posts.
This is a proposition that I intend on doing if necessary I suggest that forum moderators and other higher rank members select quality posts that deserve editing with respect to Their  images so I can carry out the re-uploading and sending of the new links to the OP's of the respective threads.
The main assistance I would need is selection of quality threads especially from main boards.
 Your opinion about this suggestion would be very much appreciated.

Theymos have discuss about this before and until now there's no improvement despite most users pick the second choice.

1: Do nothing   - 17 (16%)

Asking the @OP to update the topic has no guarantee the @OP will do that especially if they're not active anymore.

Thanks for the suggestion, it is obviously one of the reasons why talkimg.com was created in the very first place. To be in fact there are too many threads regarding this — google is your friend.

The threads you've seen that are still with broken links are those OPs who either doesn't care to  update their thread or just inactive on this forum.

Your concern is the same as that of many and this is getting worse by the day, I hope there will be a lasting solution to it. The images on Imgur still work perfectly with other sites and forums I know, I just don't know the issue that is causing good images to be invisible here. It was first the most popular Imgur and now about 4 other hosting sites are off and on.

I was shocked yesterday evening that formerly shown images from "Postimages.org" were no longer visible, all good images were gone just like that. But on checking again now, they are visible again. It calls for concern.

Your topic reminded me of a small addition, which is that beginners may not have the interest in browsing the forum or downloading a script, so adding a warning at the top of any page that contains imgur images that you must visit or download a specific script to be able to view the topic would be useful.
-Otherwise, the members above mentioned all the important solutions and links.

Thanks for mentioning these threads, as I was not aware of any of them even though when Imgur went down for BTT I saw that topic of Theymos but did not give any attentions to that as IMHO that poll did not brought anything good (or it brought?)

You are right, but most of the time OP doesn't want to spend time updating there images or they might not be aware of how to do it, I had a few threads with 2 or more images in each and never updated them because I was not aware of how to get them back now I am aware of this LoyceV tool, I will download those images and will update them. For the rest, I believe that little more can be done. Everything is now in the hands of the OPs of the affected topics/posts. Unfortunately, since many cases involve inactive users, it will be difficult to see this issue resolved.

Either way, TalkImg is available to support images posted on the forum.

Op, your suggestions would have been possible, if all the creators of these broken images threads were still active. If you check some of those threads properly, you will find out that they had been created several years ago. And the ops of such threads might have been gone for a long time and inactive. So even if you were able to fix the broken images(of which I don't know how you intend on doing all of them by your self) you still won't be able to replace them on the original thread.

There are lots of threads I've seen with broken images so finding them would take most of your time of which I don't think you would be willing to sacrifice(except you have nothing doing).

The best solution I can think of is for the ops of such threads, if they are still active to try updating their broken images when they are less busy, using the script written by Try ninja

There was poll made theymos what we should do with broken Imgur images and most of votes were for option to replace it with links. But as I understand, it's still haven't been done. I already fixed all my broken images, using script made by TryNinja - it's simpliest and easiest way to do it and you don't have to manually replace hundreds of images. Many users also did same thing, but there is still so many topics with useful information have broken links and it looks bad. Unfortunately, not much can be done to solve this issue because authors of these topics is inactive or they don't care. So we would need forum staff intervention to fix these images and it's not going to happen.

When that problem took place it was soon reported in forum and after sometime Theymos posted the poll and in that poll I also participated and I have chosen option 2 as that was the best option so far but even till this day no such thing has happened and most of the images are still coming with that proxy error.

Thumbs up to joker_josue for finding a solution for some of those image proxy error issues by launching TalkImg. Although, the joker_josue's solution is currently working like charm and will continue to work in the same way but unfortunately the old Imgur images are still present in most old threads and haven't been replaced by the OP's of the threads.

I believe that Theymos will soon make some changes in forum and allow users to click on the links of those images which give image proxy error in embedded form. Let's wait for that time and if you still want to view some images of a thread then you can simply quote that thread and you'll see the embedded links in the quote and then you can copy and paste those images to see those images.

A 5-10 minutes fix 100 images, perhaps. The script runs in your browser. Basically, you open the page of all your posts, and run the script. It will copy the images to TalkImg, then automatically edit the post with the new link. In all posts.

I remember that when the script was launched, my server received thousands of images in a few hours, that I quickly had to scale the service to handle all this input of images.

These scripts would be very useful for fixing those broken images however I believe according to our responses old posts of inactive members would not be easily modified since they can't be edited by the Ops.

Try it. If it's taking too much, you can always just close the page to stop the script (it runs page by page, post by post). You can also run it again at any time and the script will keep going from where you stopped.

I used: [Script] Imgur to TalkImg - automatically fix your broken images The script works perfectly and all the broken images are fixed. It is true that it takes some time, but it is faster than manual repair anyway.

The problem is that I still see some broken images in the forum because some members who have broken images in old threads are lazy to use the script themselves to fix their broken images, so I wonder if the forum administration can do this collectively for all the broken images in the forum?

That's why I am forever grateful to TalkImg, even though I don't use it often than I should I still love it because it makes it easier for anyone to share images and you don't even have to sweat it when it comes to adding it to your post because it has the code ready and the only thing that you'll have to worry about is adjusting the minor details like width, height or the position of the image. Regards to broken images, the solving on those issues lies on the people that have posted those images but most of them aren't an active member of the forum so who knows when will that happen.

Make sure prior to doing this, you ask them if they'd still want to maintain their threads, or else all of your efforts will turn into dust ^{[e.g. it happened to me last month when the OP of that thread (despite being an active user) ignored my post]}.

Since the solution had already been given in three ways, edit all your images, make use of alternative image hosting site, or use the provired link to solve all images problem on your profile, if we are to go by what you're suggesting, can you yourself be able to finish this task ahead, how many people will benefited and how many would not, how much more of your time will be taken than you expected if you're to started all these, image postings is no longer a problem if you already know how to go about it, except for newbies who should learn.

Just put the script code in your browser and start it running. A more open code is difficult.

For what's it worth, I used it a few days ago to change all my old images and there were hundreds of them, and nothing happened. Also, the script has been out since May (if I remember correctly) with certain modifications, and I have never seen a complaint about someone losing their account or noticing that their system is acting weird after using it. I do understand your concerns and it's perfectly normal.

Thanks for the link. I might give it a try, but the number of pictures I have shared so far might not increase by 50. That's why I don't want to run any scripts on my browser. It's not that I don't trust Tryninja, I am even using his TG bot, but that can't do any harm, but scripts like these might (again, not accusing).

So, the manual would be great for me. Again,  thanks for mentioning it, as in the future I can recommend it to another member, but the decision would be there.

Either way, TalkImg is available to support images posted on the forum. 

Yeah, I am using TalkImg right after Imgur, I have used BBimage too, but it becomes a little confusing for me, like the links it includes in the BB code of the img link.

Op if this can work out then this suggestion is the best way to go about on fixing the broken images by users in the forum. I like this approach more than the other thread approach because this like simple than the other. And that means the thread owners can also copy the image link here and paste it in imgur and recopied the link again and used it to change the broken image here. This is the best way ever if this can work then let us out into action.
