I'm considering one (or two).  It usually gets down to -20F where I am and I need a way to heat a garage (2x S19k Pros isn't enough).  At 140W and as low as $130 USD, seems like a good idea.  Except that I am concerned about it's 'openness'.  Looks like I'm getting a very locked down device.  A literal "black box" in this case.

Is this the experience from most people?  Does it lack a web UI, is it app controlled only?  Does it phone home?

Look this is the BTC section for mining.

But the L3+ is a better choice for you it burns 800 watts it costs 200 bucks on ebay from good sellers .

https://www.ebay.com/itm/156578685940

this will earn about $1.80 in a day

it burns 20kwatts in a day

It is quiet as compared to the s19

Any word on when the Nano 3 goes open source?

Didn't Canaan say it would be in December?

They originally stated back in August: "Starting in December, we will gradually open-source relevant programs and release open-source firmware to ensure enhanced security and transparency". Source: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/avalon-nano-3-blockchain-smart-home#/updates/30

As of now there have been no further updates from Canaan about this. In my opinion, if the goal is to promote transparency and enhance security through developer contributions, then the software and firmware should have been open-sourced from the very beginning. Don't get me wrong, I like the Nano 3 but personally I have little trust in proprietary or closed-source products, especially those that connect to home networks, or require a phone app for software updates and interaction with certain features.

One thing that would be beneficial is if they allowed SSH access to the Nano 3's Linux operating system, which appears to have been removed in the latest firmware version. Currently, there seems to be no official method to access the OS without reverting to an earlier, now-unavailable firmware version, or engaging in complex tinkering and reverse-engineering. The closest I’ve gotten is accessing uBoot and system logs via a UART connection, along with extracting and analyzing the firmware. But there's not yet a straightforward way, that I know of, to fully interact with the OS.

As a potential workaround, I've considered building a custom kernel using Canaan's Linux SDK for their RISC-V based K230D processor, which the Nano 3 runs on, and then flashing it to the device. However, this process might be overly cumbersome, and there are no guarantees that it will work as expected. Therefore, I would prefer to wait until Canaan begins open-sourcing software and firmware specifically for the device. If anyone is interested, here is some information and resources for Canaan's K230D chip: https://developer.canaan-creative.com/proDetail/230d

Also, it would be very helpful if Canaan releases more comprehensive technical documentation for both the hardware and software of the Nano 3. This would allow developers and enthusiasts to gain a deeper understanding of the device, facilitating more effective development, troubleshooting, and customization.

I'm curious as to what would be the reason these companies would want to keep their hardware and software secrets under wraps. Is it because it would easily allow other companies to duplicate their products and sell them off as there own undermining the profits of the companies being ripped off.

For example the BitAxe products using Bitmain ASICs which have been copied by Lucky Miners LV05, LV06, LV07 and the newest addition LV08 which appears to be direct competition to the Avalon Nano 3!

I have created a separate thread on this . Please post here.

Also nano 3 price has been again increased . Now it costs 130$ for nano 3 and 160$ with adapter.

For anyone not using this as a lottery ticket and actually mining with it, how much BTC have you earned since setting it up? I'm at around 0.0002 BTC over 5 months or so, which feels acceptable to me. I also don't keep it on all the time, as I'm worried it's going to melt down on me. As a desk heater though, it's pretty good! And it's fun to have a low-stakes entry into mining.

Hello! How to enable the socks5 proxy server on the device so that traffic goes through the Tor network?

you mean your miner would send data via tor?

You will never ever win a block as other than hashing power the latency also matters, the lower the latency the higher the chances of winning a block.

However i see in the current update of the app, one can create an account even though you dont need to .I think this is for remote operations like if you are out of home and not connected to your locale network and want to tinker the miner.

Has anyone tried to create an account in the app and then log in?

I think my nano 3 might be a paperweight already. I noticed that it wasn’t hashing on the pool so I pulled up the app on my phone and saw it has been updated. Unfortunately, after I restarted the miner I was no longer able to connect to my network. I’ll have to mess with this when I have more time. Between the loud whining fans having ball bearings going out already, bad software, and now a dead miner, I have to say I wish I’d gone with a bitaxe instead.

Two of my devices have already been repaired. The bearings on the other 3 are already whistling. I don't think this is a product with a very long lifespan.

I sold mine month ago. The company did not invest much into this product. We could have seen this on how they managed the security issue the device had at the beginning. I've not seen a useful improvement over the time the device was released to the market.

A Bitaxe is a much better investment, if you ask me. Software is improved all the time, large community around it and there is new hardware published from time to time. Firmware is not hidden behind lots of links and it is open source.

Support is also much better for a Bitaxe than for the Nano 3.

ITS FUNNY my two nanos are fine at medium speed since the summer.

But my bitaxe died in 2 days or so. I got a replacement bitaxe which is really working good.

The replace is better than the 2  nanos  as it is doing only 17.7 watts for 1th very quiet and efficient.

So based on my first bitaxe the nanos were better.

and based on my replacement bitaxe the bitaxe smokes the nanos.

don’t buy a nano.

a usb-c jack will not run 24-7-365 for years.

I am pretty sure that even set to middle speed I burned up the the input ports on both nanos.

so six-seven months and trashed they are.

Just in time for me to not buy the 1100 usd mini. So they lose an 1100 usd buy from me.

This analysis is interesting.

I've also thought about buying Bitaxe. In your analysis, after doing the math, is it more worthwhile?

The problem, which isn't a problem, is that Bitaxe only works in solo mining? That means you're just doing block lottery, right?

I think either i am confused or you are.
the mini and the nano 3s have USB 2.0 or 3.0 for wifi module which can also act as RJ45 adapter for wired.

for power yes the nano 3 and 3s have type c but for mini it is full power cable.

So will you buy the mini 3? I bought from ebay for 899$ and i live in a country where there is no service centre. I already have nano 3 and only use it 16 hours a day in medium mode to mine solo BCH

Okay they sold me garage that broke in 7 months.

why buy from them again?

Fool me once. Not twice.

So Avalon lost a 1100 dollar sale (including the selling cost)

I'll add to this I had to return 1 out of the 6 Nano 3's due to failure within the first 3 weeks of having them running on medium.

All ordered from their indiegogo pre-sale with official PSU's.

The quality of these is certainly in question for long term use but for the value for a 4TH miner is still pretty decent imho.

yeah I spent say 260 for two of them. power cost was say 5x170=850 kwatts at 16 cents.

so 260+140=400 usd for 7 months worth of hash at ckpool.

its not a terrible price.

but they are never going to last long as the usb-c can not do 100-140 watts 24/7

the bitaxe with a proper heatsink is far more efficient. the first bitaxe I got was not built right due to heatsink issues.

the new one will work and work and work and work and work.

much like the little beagles I got they will work and work and work and work.
