Just another idiotic example of symbology over substance.

Heh I sleep during that time but I'll definetly take an hour today to turn off my miners so that I can clean the dust off of them Smiley  True that it won't do anything in the grand scheme of things but it is a nice gesture.  They probably did a ton of work to get those cities aboard but they could have been putting that into getting websites to use darker designs for a pledged amount of time and gotten more energy savings out of it.

We not only have the lights off in the mining room we have over 30 hamsters running in their wheels that are connected to hand crank electric generators producing electricity for the miners. Hey I feed and clean up after those hamsters so the least they can do is help provide for the household.

Additionally my wife and I know that our city uses an electric pump to deliver the water to our home so to conserve electricity and water we take showers together in the dark.  Grin

i'm gonna make a poll. if a lot of people switch their miners off, i'm gonna put extra ones on to profit from lower overall hashrate

Earth hour is not only retarded but also dangerous. It makes people psychologically think they have actually made their part in saving environment just by closing lights for an hour. That may keep them from doing something that actually helps environment and most importantly from politically addressing the problem...

I know the poll is tongue in cheek, but I don't like the use of the word "hate".

Too many people reshape public opinion on the basis that anyone who is against "them" are by definition "hateful".  It wouldn't bother me that much, but it is too effective and keeps people from thinking objectively.

Do you think this "problem" really needs to be addressed "politically"?

The last thing we need is more government obstacles motivated by political maneuvering.

Just another idiotic example of symbology over substance.

I'm pretty sure the Earth is going to survive whether I turn my lights off or not for an hour.

"Symbology" can lead to increased awareness.it can also give people an excuse to do nothing more. It has nothing to do however with the earth not surviving because of the lights turned off.

Sounds like it to me.  Culled from the Wikipedia article

"encouraging individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol for their commitment to the planet"

"Symbology" can lead to increased awareness.

Awareness of what, exactly?

And what benefit would said awareness be?
