I became worried and found it difficult to answer after my friend asked me scary and ridiculous questions about Bitcoin ownership.
he asked. If friends, new acquaintances, or other people find out that you have a sizable amount of Bitcoin, and you don't tell them. Then you are kidnapped with several people covering their faces, with the aim of getting your wallet address with the risk that if you don't give it you will be killed.
And another reason, you have given your wallet address to members you trust, such as family members or your wife and children.

And I want to know, what are you going to do.
Aren't you going to give the bad guy your wallet address, and you let him get killed. However, your Bitcoins remain safe because you have given your wallet address to someone you trust.
Or you will give it away because you still want to live, and you don't have any more Bitcoins.

And it was just a casual conversation with a friend of mine who both owns Bitcoin, and I was just wondering what other people's answers to this dreaded question made me want to create a thread.

There was a recent thread about this case, looking at the answer, it's either you create a multisig wallet, extended passphrase, or just having more than one wallet.

But if someone getting kidnaped when he only have one wallet and the attacker know about that, well it's better to let your money go than your life.

Since you've create this thread, I guess there's no excuse anymore as you've know to overcome that. Tongue

The situation is serious because it relates to your life, you can be killed.

First, don't try to make noise and let people know that you are a Bitcoin investor, have a lot of bitcoin and you are rich. It is prevention.

If you already did stupid things opposite than above recommendations, you have to prepare a small wallet to gove it to bad guys when serious situation comes. Because you will be able to use that wallet, to save yourself.

Even if you give them that wallet, nothing to be sure that they will free you. So let's return to first recommendation as prevention to be attacked. You will be smarter if you keep personal actitivies in secret.

Give them what they want. You can fight back that's a bit risky but have your firearm concealed all the time. Shoot when the opportunity is on your side.
If you want to prevent this from happening then just don't share with anyone that you have Bitcoin. I don't know if the stories about people getting kidnapped and ask their passwords at gunpoint were true but it's very possible especially if you share information on social media.

Sharing anything that criminals can assume you have some tremendous amount of wealth means you can be targeted.

Your keys your responsibility

I recently caught someone trying his luck with the classic scam "privatekey bait".
My silly answer, why don't I start collecting these kinds of keys just in case? Let's say someday in a situation OP described, I'd hand over these keys to a robber. More seriously, I'd rather prevent myself from becoming a target for criminals. I thought this situation would never happen.

It's very scary, and I wish it hadn't happened to me. But if that happened to me, maybe I would try to trick them so they would trust me. Next, I will try to save myself. I don't want to be a victim of kidnapping or murder. And I think the rest of my family will try to find me when they find out I'm missing.

By trying to trick them, I still have a chance to live. And that's where I still have to try harder to save myself. After all, I don't store all my Bitcoins in just one wallet address. I keep it in many separate wallets, which I have told my trusted people about. They also know how to use their Bitcoin.

That would be a scary scenario if it happened. And that's why we don't need to tell other people that we have Bitcoin, let alone tell them how many Bitcoins we have.

Now, let us not get things confused here. You gave out your wallet address to your family and the people you trust, and anyone with the address can view what the wallet holds and cannot move out of what is inside. So aside from you, do any of your family members you trust have access to the wallet? If the person appears not to be found any day, can your family access the wallet with your phrase?

Then again, in a situation like this, you never can tell if you give out this wallet if they will still let you leave or treat you as trash after they get what they want. One thing is to ask for it, and the other is for them to keep their own side of the deal, so you have to take the risk involved here in order not to lose it all at once.

If there is some sort of guarantee that if you give out that wallet access to them, you will be set free, then the best thing will be for you to do that, as your safety and life matter more than that bitcoin. If you are alive and in good health, you can always acquire more.

you can only hope they believe when they see you only have $5000 in one of the wallets you'll give. and then they leave also, it's a lot risky when they know you have a ton and you tried to trick them.

if those people spied on you for a month on social media and learned things about you, where you live, your wife and daughter this is more complicated. it's best to be anon on social media so no one will ever see your posts and keep the BTC secret from the public.

I believe that kind of concern is not specific to Bitcoin, it applies to any kind of money/wealth a person has. I'm certainly not wealthy, and I try not to think about robberies. Money or any sort is not a #1 priority to me, so of course I value my life and the lives of others higher than my BTC or any kind of money. I wouldn't resist, I wouldn't try to play dumb or do anything like that. If it's a life-threatening situation, I would give access to any money that I have, provided that the robbers already know about it or suspect it. Life and well-being is something hard to make more of, unlike money.

When you are a wealthy person, these problems may emerge whether you own bitcoin or not doesn't really matter. If you live in a country where there are too many criminals, then as a wealthy person, this is the problem you need to solve first. Obviously, sooner or later you will be a target and if the juridical system isn't functioning, then your wealth will get stolen from you. Let's say you don't have any bitcoins but you have lots of FIAT in your bank account. These same people may still kidnap you, put a gun on your head and tell you to send the money to an overseas account. Once the transaction is complete, it will be over.

Getting rich is a hard task, the harder task is staying rich.

If you knew to yourself that you have a lot of bitcoin that even your family could be in danger due to that then keep that to yourself. Yes family members are trusted but how sure it is. Sometimes the scariest one is your close relative or cousin who are just being quiet and monitoring you slowly. If its involved money then be sure to trust no one.

Basically, this hypothetical is like asking if you'd fork over your cash or valuables if some robber stuck a gun in your face.  Well, duh - of course you gotta hand that stuff over! Money can be replaced but your life can't.

In this whole give me your Bitcoin wallet at gunpoint or I'll kill you scenario your buddy cooked up, the only sane choice is to tell the baddies what they want.  I mean come on your life is way more important than some digital coins.

Obviously no one wants to end up in that nightmarish spot and  best way to avoid it is to be real careful who you tell about your Bitcoin stash.  Dont chatter to friends, family, or randos you don't 100% trust.  And if you spill to someone you do trust for safekeeping, drill it into their head that the info cannot get out under any circumstances.

There was a recent thread about this case, looking at the answer, it's either you create a multisig wallet, extended passphrase, or just having more than one wallet.

I think having more than a single wallet is the only thing that would save one from this situation, even if you have multi sig wallet the other co-signers will definitely be contacted and if they make a wrong move then your life might be placed in danger. Also for the seed phrase been protected by the passphrase it also useless in cases like this because if a wrong wallet is recovered by the kidnappers then you’re in danger again. Passphrase and multi sig wallet are just protection against phishing attempts and not attacks like kidnapping.

As to OP it will be stupid to give them wrong information at that condition, we actually accumulate bitcoin or other material stuffs just to live a comfortable life why protect those things with our life’s at risk

The question is how will people find out about your huge holding without disclosing it publicly? Isn’t distributing it to other people will make you more exposed to danger because you will put others on your same spot?

The best thing to do is make your holdings private at all times and never talk about it to anyone if you want to avoid this kind of situation. Prevention is better than cure especially if you have a choice to become silent at all times while enjoying your Bitcoin holdings benefits.

Discretion is key. Publicly broadcasting your financial situation, particularly in volatile and potentially risky sectors like crypto, can attract unwanted attention. Think of it like carrying a bullseye on your back. Keeping your financial life private is not about secrecy or shame; it's about minimizing unnecessary risk.

While your example uses Bitcoin, the principle applies to any valuable asset. Flaunting wealth, regardless of its source, can be a magnet for trouble. It's like wearing a flashy necklace in a dark alley – it makes you a target. True wealth, in all its forms, often thrives best in the quiet, away from prying eyes.

Ultimately, the choice of how much to reveal about your financial life is a personal one. But remember, true security often lies not in flashy displays of wealth, but in quiet prudence and a measured approach to sharing personal information.

It sounds a bit cinematic, but many people face such situations in earthly life.
And in such a terrible situation, it is better to save lives. Because they will attack you by planning so that even if you try, you will not be able to fight them.
It is better for you to fulfill their wishes than to be injured or killed.
Because you can get back your lost wealth at some point if you live, but if you lose your life in the illusion of wealth, then there will be none.It seems that well-wishers with knives in their backs under the guise of friendship are all around us, but we don't recognize them.

But the most important thing is to keep you and your assets, or bitcoins, safe so that you never end up in such a scary situation. And your assets will be safe only when you don't share your assets (bitcoins) with everyone.
Not only digital assets (Bitcoin), but earthly assets also need to be protected. Of course, those who have bad intentions sit there, hoping for such tempting news, and attack when they see the opportunity.

That's why you have to take responsibility for your wealth management in all circumstances. So keep yourself in check. Do not share any information with anyone that may put your precious life at risk.

This is the reason why privacy and anonymity is very important when you use BTC. If you own BTC you should not go around telling people you do, and if you want to spend or receive funds from friends and people who know you, use a fresh address, do not use an address that contains the majority of your funds. You cannot spend $5 on coffee from an address that holds 5 BTC, it is not a wise thing to do.

If you are kidnapped, there is nothing you can do and you have to hand over the funds to the criminals. But you can extend your seed phrase with a passphrase, and you can use it to create plausible deniability in a case of a $5 wrench attack or a kidnap, the criminals may fall for it and only steal the funds in your base wallet.

As someone who prioritizes family, my responses will be based this principle. The significance of my family cannot be  overemphasize. They are my utmost priority. Their presence gives my life meaning, and I love them so much. I with a second thought give up my bitcoins repeatedly if it means being able to witness the growth of my family and share in key moments of my children's lives, such as graduations, weddings, purchasing their first car or home, and more. I will always be able to accumulate bitcoins again over my lifetime, but I cannot have another family. I would willingly give up my bitcoins to criminals multiple times. Family always comes first in my life.

Only a foolish person would put money above their life. Yes, it will hurt to lose money in worked hard for but money can always be made by the living. The only sensible thing to do is to pay the ransom and pray you get home safely. This is a good example of what can happen when you make your bitcoin hodlings public, you create a unsafe space for yourself.

That is scary indeed but it won't happen to anyone if you as a person and knows the danger it may bring but there's a way that it won't happen. Even though no one knows that you have bitcoin but you shouldn't tell anyone that you have except the people who you trust the most and you should also have something that will protect yourself or for self defense. I don't see anyone who is willing to risk his life just so that he can keep his/her btc. My question is, how will you manage your bitcoin when you're dead?. The answer to your question would be to give the wallet so that you can live.

Practical answer is to let them have it and still be alive. Well, if you managed to gather a decent amount once, then you'd more likely be able to achieve it again. However, things won't work the way we would want it; imagine if the robbers has no plan of leaving you alive? For sure you would feel it by your own, therefore, in such instance I'd be fine just dying to lessen the casualty. You'd have a gut feeling of where you will be engaging yourself with. This is why it would be much better to just keep your mouth such from public audience. Posting and doing some flex on what you achieve is never a bad thing however be vigilant with your own actions for your own safety.

In the given scenario there are many possible outcome chances; it could be worse or just fine and that is for you to find out if ever you will be driving me and even with long period of time.

Well, I think the answer is very obvious. Of course, anyone would choose their life before anything; if someone would rather protect their money than their life, then they are insane. Yes,  it could be hurtful that your hard work to get those assets will be gone instantly, but the thing is, you will never be able to use them if you are dead. But the question is, if you are a wise investor, no matter how many assets you have or how much bitcoin you have, will you let others know that you have those assets? Even to your close relatives, even to your family? I know it may be impossible not to say it to your family because it's your family, but will you risk it? We trust them, yes, but if you know there is something unusual about your family, then you should not say all the things you have, even to your close friends. I personally keep the secret of my having crypto currency assets, even to my friends, family, and even my girlfriend. It's because there's nothing to be flexing about; I want to keep it low.

I mean, the way here in the first place is to avoid the initial premise of other people knowing that you have a sizeable amount of Bitcoin or heck, money in general. Unless you had some sizeable amount of confidence behind your security then I don't think there's a reason to share about it in the first place.

But considering it did happen, I'd give the money 100%. Nothing's more important than your life after all. If possible and I have enough proof I can even probably try to ask exchanges to mark the coins to be tainted/stolen, only if possible and hey, if lucky, get it back.

There is no guarantee that the kidnappers will let you live after you give them your private keys. I don't know what must be done on that scenario because we didn't experienced it and we don't want to get into that situation. But maybe try to lie or what not just to get some opportunity to escape making them believe that you're going to give it to them but you've forgotten it somewhere you've put the keys or wallets or try to assess them if they are informed and knows something about wallets and recoveries.

Tongue
I say the content you quoted here's a little bit of a stretch against what OP's trying to suppose but it's still good advice. Personally I'd say it's stupid of the kidnapped to be using a single wallet for all his bitcoins in the first place, When some of the average joes in here are not even comfortable saving their wealths of bitcoin in 2-3 wallets. But we're in here, we can't really get out of the rut unless we spit out the key phrases, and yet I think I'd keep my mouth shut about my passphrase and just let them have their way. 90% of kidnappers kill their victims anyway, so my chances of getting out of there alive is already slim. If I give them an advantage over my family I'm just gonna be dead and my family's gonna be left penniless lol.

I'd carry my passphrases to the death and would not tell a single soul except my future family about it. Heck I wouldn't even tell them about it until I know I'm gonna die cause they might just hasten the whole ordeal for me so they can get inheritance moolah which seems to happen a little more often than most of us think.

I have a silly question. Don't you need to write down the very long password or code for the wallet somewhere else? I don't think people can memorize it because it's incredibly long.

So, if you get kidnapped, you wouldn't be able to give it to the bad guys, right?

It should be safe if a bitcoin holders remains anonymous from the start and does not tell other people that he/she has Bitcoin in their wallet. Because in most cases of kidnapping of Bitcoin holders it starts when they tell other people about how much Bitcoin they have or when they flex what they hold.
Or Bitcoin holders can avoid traveling far away or to places with low security if they are a well-known person whose number of Bitcoins they hold is known to many people, and as often as possible uploads their activities on social media to inform many people regarding their activities. And if possible, bitcoin holders doesn't need to share their private key with other people, even if it's their siblings or parents, to reduce unwanted things.

op this is only your friend told you in fact never happen to anyone like this. If you are kidnapped and want your bitcoins in exchange for kidnapping only those close to you who you inform about bitcoins will know about this information so your  One should not discuss Bitcoin with anyone. Especially the closest person of your family it may be your wife or children you can share only with the person whom you trust the most and also it is not right to share about Bitcoin with anyone else. Because bitcoin is very risky we have to keep bitcoin in a safe wallet so it is better not to tell anyone about that wallet. After listening to your words, I have been thinking for a while that if this really happens, Bitcoin for life, then maybe we will choose our life if such a situation does not happen to anyone. We should be very careful before sharing anything about Bitcoin with anyone.

This is the weak point in any security system, namely "physical violence" and it applies to everything that has value.

You could have Gold coins or cash stashed away somewhere or simply a valueble item that someone wants.... bitcoins are no different than any of these things.

My solution : Split your hoard, so that you can give up, only a portion of your whole hoard and keep quite about your wealth.

Most people have given it away because this has already happened to lots of people after flexing the number of bitcoins they have on social media thinking that's OK and nothing to worry about being kidnapped and that's what exactly happened, hey were hunted, and forcibly taken their bitcoins and they gave it easily after some beatings because their lives are more valuable. That's why knowledge is important and you really need to know how to prevent yourself from getting the same fate by learning the way to hide your identity and also the amount of bitcoins you have in your crypto wallet.

I would say:

Sort out your priorities

Life is always dangerous, every second of it. You can have an accident, stumble in the shower and break your neck, or get run over while trying to cross a street. Or maybe get a serious health issue and have pain for the rest of your life.

So your job is to find an individual approach to a risk level you are comfortable with. If you worry about the risk of a plane crash, maybe take the train instead, on the other hand if you enjoy freeclimbing , maybe it is worth the risk for you......

My priorities:

1) Stay alive - if you are dead the rest will not matter
2) Stay healthy - being sick and in pain is not my idea of a good life
3) Try to have some money to pay for nice things..... But money can be easily replaced, not so much with health.....

To sum it up:

Try to reduce unnessary risks as much as possible. If you encounter a risky situation try to achiebe the least worse outcome.

Back to Bitcoin, I think try to keep a low profile and protect your wallet.
If the above is not enough than just accept that you will maybe lose your bitcoins, but on the other hand at least you keep your life and your health and then be happy about this

I don't agree with the people, who just say "give them your BTC, your life is much more important". OK, but what if they get your BTC and kill you afterwards? Never give anything to your kidnappers, you are valuable to them as long as you have BTC. The moment you give them the BTC, you become a burden and they will try to get rid of you.
The same situation applies when you have cash or gold and you get kidnapped, I don't know why everyone thinks that owning BTC changes anything. BTC transactions can be tracked and the police can find the kidnappers.

OP telling you the truth there is no way those kidnappers are going to let live without telling them were you hide your bitcoins.
But OP firstly how did they no you are a bitcoin holder cause it will be to hard for people to find what you are into bitcoin or maybe you did tell a close friend about it and fame you all cause no body is to be trusted you never can tell who the person will be..
So back to your story if I was in shoes I will just give them what they want cause if there is life there is still hope as for me maybe that what I will do in that situation.

Prevention is always the best when it comes to those hypothetical scenarios, if you have an amount of money which is high enough for you to be worried about being kidnapped, and in the country where you live this is a real danger, you need to take steps to make sure this does not happen to you, and this will probably mean storing your seed words in a place different than your house, this way you can reduce to zero the chances of any of your friends or family members finding out about your bitcoin holdings which could put your life at risk.

First I must tell you that Bitcoin is a Treasury investment that is proefficiently attractive as gold which could whisper betraying, greeds and selfish interests amongst individuals that are interactive or related in a circle in this Bitcoin industry.

@ OP, I can tell you not to trust anyone in this Bitcoin journey not even a Bitcoin colleague as you may say.
Sometimes some persons intellectually grosses around you with a friendly mode but on a diverse motive in disguise surveying to decode possibilities to take advantages of you if possible.

In this Bitcoin space, there are full of envies and traitors so, be sensitive in responding and relating with such persons.
However, your life is more important that the treasures you have accumulated or all that proefficient accountabilities you have laboured in this World that count be compared to your life.

Let go the treasures for your life to stay because there is hope for recovery.

if those people spied on you for a month on social media and learned things about you, where you live, your wife and daughter this is more complicated.
That is why we as Bitcoiners most specially those who owns thousands or even millions worth of Bitcoin I think the need to invest in security will also makes any sense. Go get a license to own and posses firearms because we all know that when something happens, authorities when called will arrive from 10-20 minutes or more right after a crime was committed so I think we also take that into consideration.

it's best to be anon on social media so no one will ever see your posts and keep the BTC secret from the public.
This for me a very effective way to stay away from the prying eyes or else we'll become a primary target or prey.

If you look at firearms make sure you get proper training how to use them and practice regularly.  You don't want to get killed by your own gun or maybe kill a todler next door, just because the bullet went through several walls..... and you had no idea how powerful a bullet can be....

Don't dream about it, before this ever happens you need to prevent it.

You must be cautious about exposing your involvement with crypto, I always feel unsafe around people when I do something costly that they aren't able to do, because honestly apart from getting kidnapped, jealousy is real.

Put your head down if you are living in a country where security isn't that great, don't let anyone know how rich you are and stay away from jealous friends.

I have get used to pretending like I don't have anything, my mode of dressing is just casual, not costly thing on me at all, even if you can afford it doesn't mean it's safe to do so.

on that scenario because we didn't experienced it and we don't want to get into that situation. But maybe try to lie or what not just to get some opportunity to escape making them believe that you're going to give it to them but you've forgotten it somewhere you've put the keys or wallets or try to assess them if they are informed and knows something about wallets and recoveries.
There are ways that these people will know that you are a bitcoin holder. If you're someone that keeps on posting some charts or anything related to cryptocurrencies on your social media, then that's the best way that they'll know if someone is into this market and are an investor.
That's the reason if you're posting related to crypto on your social media accounts, it's best to just remain lowkey and keep them private because it's a financial matter that you should keep private.

Of course the investments should be kept hidden.  Because if you are an investor who knows it, then you can be attacked in different ways.  Can be logically or logically attacked.  Only people close to you can harm you at times. If you have a large amount of bitcoin holdings.  Then you can be kidnapped.  And your wallet can get hacked.

Even if you gave them your keys, I doubt that they will keep you alive. Cause they already got what they want, so what's the point of keeping you alive? Once they can have access to your Bitcoin, it means that they'll have enough money to protect themselves even if they kill you. They're bad guys so how can you trust them to keep you alive after giving them your Bitcoin? Also, if other trusted family members know your Bitcoin, and you got killed by not giving it to the kidnappers, they can target your family as well. In this kind of situation where money involves, you can't be sure that you'll be safe even after giving them what they want.

The best thing to keep you and your Bitcoin safe is to keep it private. The bigger the amount, the more private you should be. No matter if it's a relative or a close friend.

I may not be perfect but I know well the calibre of the kind of people I walk with, you can't expect me to be around the same kind of positive thinking minds and yet be afraid, also, I don't think it's wise for you to allow people around you to specifically in now what am upto.

At this point one have to be wise, if you try any shit with these guys they may end up killing you, so it's better they even get access to the wallet and later after the whole show, you're being alive and can get another bitcoin with time

If you have quite a handful of bitcoin one good thing to do as more of a precautionary measure is to not have all of your bitcoin in just one wallet it might be a little inconvenient but if this were to happen you would at least want a few of your bitcoin left if hypothetically you gave the kidnapper access to your wallet

Like if you decide to dump your wife / girlfriend and she decides a kind of severance payment would be appropiate and she is well informed about your bitcoin holdings.......

Should take her about 30 minutes in a dodgy bar to find guys willing to assist her....

and this will probably mean storing your seed words in a place different than your house, this way you can reduce to zero the chances of any of your friends or family members finding out about your bitcoin holdings which could put your life at risk.
If you do not trust your friends and family, i wonder what location outside your home that will be safe for you to store your seed phrase, except you have a private home elsewhere that nobody lives in, and very few people have such privileges.

If you do not have any safe and secure location outside of your home, then you just have to store your seed phrase in your house, but with great opsec to go with it. It is worth mentioning that adding extra layers of security provides better security of your funds, layers like extending your seed phrase with a passphrase or creating a multisig wallet.

Honestly there is nothing bigger than life. For me I won't even think it twice or delay. I will give them the wallet the moment they ask for it. What good is my Bitcoin to me when am dead? My family members I gave my wallet phrase will sell of the Bitcoin the moment am dead. I rather stay alive without Bitcoin than leave behind Bitcoin that I will not see how it sold and where the money will go. Upon that my children will become fatherless and my wife a window who will later remarry.

But I think there is no safer place than our own home, because if we no longer trust our loved ones, who will be worthy of our trust? Life is confusing, many people even consider money more important than family. Bitcoin is just money and how can they consider it more important than their family?
In my opinion, people who are always suspicious even of their own loved ones will never trust anyone, including themselves, and they are also unreliable in everyone's eyes .

Exactly. There’s no point defending our bitcoin asset if we’ll also be killed, so just give them what they want and you might be free after that. Although there’s no assurance that you won’t be killed after you give them your wallet address, but in this type of scenario, it’s better to think positively than keep on doubting them.

There are a lot cases like this being reported and most likely, the kidnappers end up killing their victims. But if you were in the shoe of the victim, for sure you will just follow their order by not trying to go against them, otherwise you will get tortured until your last breath. That’s kinda worse but it’s certainly happening to some of the hostages.

There was a recent thread about this case, looking at the answer, it's either you create a multisig wallet, extended passphrase, or just having more than one wallet.
If the situation develops according to the scenario described by OP, then neither "multisig wallet" nor "having more than one wallet" will help. You'll have to part with something. Although the attackers are determined to deprive you of your wallet, they can also deprive you of your life. Or both to cover tracks.

But if someone getting kidnaped when he only have one wallet and the attacker know about that, well it's better to let your money go than your life.
There probably needs to be a mechanism to protect against this, like blocking the wallet (which is basically impossible), but marking the wallet address would not hurt (so that exchangers and other P2P users know that these bitcoin are stolen).

Not only people that are close to you but also random people that can be friends of your friends or just whole random strangers. That's why with every move you do, you have to be careful with everything that you do especially when you're feeling like bragging about your investments on the web, you shouldn't really. It's going to be scary when you do that and don't think about the consequences that might happen.

If I don't say how many bitcoins I have or how many bitcoins a person has there is no way to tell. OP, I personally think the scenario you mentioned is very unlikely to happen. But accidents can happen in any way in life. Such situations are more likely to be faced by acquaintances, because they know everything about you personally. kidnappers will knowingly hijack everything, be it a single account or multiple accounts. However, if faced with such a situation, after understanding the situation, if I realize that giving a bitcoin wallet can save lives, I will give it. And if there is a fight to survive, then I will fight. Since this kind of talking is coming here I would say everyone should handle bitcoin, bitcoin wallet carefully on their own initiative.

Yes, it is frightening, but to start, if you keep your bitcoin wallet secret, nobody will be able to find out that you have a significant amount in it. You could prevent these situations or things from happening if you kept your possessions and your ownership of Bitcoin to yourself. Telling others you talk to in person or online could cause them to get triggered to do so.
In a situation like that, I would rather die than have the goods I have been working on stolen. After all, I think my family members would benefit from it in the future, and since one of them actually knows my wallet address, I don't mind as long as they are secure. Rather, the fruits of all my labor will go to those robbers who are so greedy that they never deserve it. I should keep it because, well, there's a chance that even if I give them my wallet address, they could still kill me. Tongue

Not only people that are close to you but also random people that can be friends of your friends or just whole random strangers. The most important thing is that anything related to your identity, information about your assets, etc. must be completely kept confidential. Don't upload it to the public because it will become a digital footprint that cannot be erased. Many foreigners will certainly be stalking someone who has great influence and appears to have quite a lot of assets. posts that show graphs, total assets and profits will make them curious and make them targets for hacking. So you have to be careful in doing everything in cyberspace.

not just foreigners, it's the locals that are more dangerous. since they can pretend they are from the same city and send you a friend request on social media. i think this will actually be a common crime one day just like the divorced women scam who are targeted because they are lonely and some hunk befriended them and asking for money.

i would actually want to create a dummy account and post some edited photos like i'm a miner, i think i will be getting lots of hotties sending me pms.  of course they are also men pretending to be chick.

It’s only if you’re careless that people will know that you have Bitcoin. Imagine the fact that Satoshi, the creators of Bitcoin are anonymous till date that it has increased so much in value. It’s because of their security too. So I think we should follow his steps too and be anonymous. And you know there’s a mentality around Bitcoin in which people think that anyone who has a Bitcoin wallet has a lot of money, even when many normal people are worth way more than that. Don’t let anyone know.

Even if you gave them your keys, I doubt that they will keep you alive. Cause they already got what they want, so what's the point of keeping you alive? Once they can have access to your Bitcoin, it means that they'll have enough money to protect themselves even if they kill you.
You're wrong, when a robbery is stealing someone else money, the punishment won't be as big as make someone dead. Moreover it's easier to hide the stolen money than hiding the dead body and your trace. Haven't you see it in your country? where the police caught killers than robbers.

So I think we should follow his steps too and be anonymous. And you know there’s a mentality around Bitcoin in which people think that anyone who has a Bitcoin wallet has a lot of money, even when many normal people are worth way more than that. Don’t let anyone know.
If you're use a centralized exchange, you're no longer anonymous. Tongue

One thing that bitcoiners needs to know is "keep your source of income a secret and private matter", something that should be to yourself alone, let people see that you are not poor, you're making income somehow but don't don't how or where it's coming from. That's how a bitcoiner ought to live.

Kidnappers have two options in mind, either to get what they want  or kill you if you're preventing them from getting what they want. So in that situation giving out your seed phrase is what should be the best reasonable thing to do. It's when there's life that there will be hope to make money. The motivation should be that, if you can make that amount then you can also make more of that if you're alive.

I see many on social media who openly declare themselves Bitcoin lords and queens, I laugh Grin, what OP said might be just a mere conversation but it actually happens in real life. People actually believe Bitcoin holders are multi millionaires when in real sense, some are actually struggling to make profits. I won't really blame those who think this way about Bitcoin holders, afterall, you gave them this impression about you. No one will attack or harass you if you do not give them a reason to do so. People need to learn how to keep certain information about their personal lives private, carelessness will only expose them to more danger.

If for any reason I am being attacked and my life is at stake,  why should I struggle with them? I will rather fight to stay alive than fight to protect my wallet. Life has no duplicate you know, Bitcoins lost can always be recovered.

In a situation where I got kidnapped and there's only 2 options (give BTC or DIE) I'd probably give out.

I mean, as soon as you know the path, this can't be stolen. And I believe that no owner of several BTC would be so silly at a point where there's only BTC as his money.

I've read a case few years where a rich bitcoin investor who showed off driving expensive cars and living in apartments disappeared. They found his car parked and from what the police had found he probably drove off with someone in that person's car, but there were no witnesses, only tire marks. They never found his body and it's been years, so probably they tortured him to get his bitcoin and then killed him to avoid being recognized. Most likely these were people he knew because from the looks of it he parked his car and got out to talk to them.

Anyway, I can't say what I'd do. It's easy to say that I wouldn't give them my money, but what if they started to torture me. After a few hours I'd be to tired to resist them. The only thing is that I don't have my bitcoin with me and I can't access it from anywhere, so they'd have to take me home and there are cameras so it wouldn't be easy for them. Either use multisig, or hold your hardware wallet in a bank deposit box. Make it impossible for them to get it from you and you'll have a chance to survive it.

Tongue

None of us is forced to use centralized exchanges so technically it’s our choice. Secondly, this doesn’t have anything to do with centralized exchanges because it’s the company that knows who you are, and not the other users. have you heard of any centralized exchange that posts people’s identity online? Binance for example has a lot of users and I can bet that there’s that user who transacts millions of dollars on the platform but doesn’t let anyone know it’s all around Bitcoin Smiley

There was a recent thread about this case, looking at the answer, it's either you create a multisig wallet, extended passphrase, or just having more than one wallet.

But if someone getting kidnaped when he only have one wallet and the attacker know about that, well it's better to let your money go than your life.
You are correct. It's better to let go off your wallet for your life to be speard. If no life no Bitcoin. So when your life is speard you have more chances of investment in the future, and learn from that experience on how to have different wallet and not only one. Sothat that one wallet wouldn't be a threat to you.

not just foreigners, it's the locals that are more dangerous. since they can pretend they are from the same city and send you a friend request on social media. i think this will actually be a common crime one day just like the divorced women scam who are targeted because they are lonely and some hunk befriended them and asking for money.

i would actually want to create a dummy account and post some edited photos like i'm a miner, i think i will be getting lots of hotties sending me pms.  of course they are also men pretending to be chick.
Yes, there are more fake accounts circulating and pretending to be someone who looks like they have an established life and job. But in reality they are only setting traps that will eat their victims when they start to enter and believe. So it is important to do research or observation first before trusting anyone on social media, because social media is full of tricks and deception.

Many people end up experiencing the same story where they are deceived by their online friends because they are careless and too trusting of new people they know even though we do not know what someone's purpose is close to us because it could be like what happened in several cases of fraud that also happened to us in the end.

It does not mean that we are anti-social and do not want to be approached by anyone on social media but we also have to be able to limit ourselves because if it is not too important for us why should we always be forced to try to be in the scope of new friendships that are not too tested in trust. Because after all, vigilance must still be emphasised because this is an important condition to keep ourselves a little awake from things that are not too desirable.

just be careful with everyone you talk even the old friends you have.  you never know how much a person envies you especially if you show how successful you are in life on social media.  it's those guys that are more dangerous because they already know you.  the new ones like the users who send friend requests can easily be ignored.
people above just advised to keep it to yourself iff you have an amount of BTC.

Yeah, I think you brought some good points.

If they are evil, they'll kill you anyway. But in a hipotetical scenario where you could choose, maybe getting out alive would be a better option.
That's the main point of the discussion, what would you choose then? since you just repeated it. What's best is to just give it to them if you really value your life 'coz no one would really be making use of it if ever you die due to them heartless. You won't also bring your assets to afterlife therefore no valid reason will be enough to validate and support the claim of those who will choose not to. It is a life or death situation and it would be okay choosing your life over the consequences of them getting what you've work out with. It will just be illogical being 'tough' and eventually dying because of 'money'; give it up and just invest again or take a break from this industry. According to my mentor, once you finally reached an amount money, you will always find a way to again be back into it and reach it again or even cross it.

It would be indeed unfair and frustrating but always choose to live 'coz life means another chance to be back on your feet. Let's say maybe it would be tiring to again be back to zero but what's a better choice then? Be tough and still avoid them to run with it or to just know that money will still be money, which is something you will to purchase.

When you're not in a situation to fight back and overcome the situation, it is good to surrender your wallet. Life is more important than money, maybe with the bitcoin holdings we could've lived in a much more comfortable manner, with no money, it could've been very difficult, and we need to start from scratch. Life won't be the same forever, based on our efforts, there will be rewards, and somehow, with our hard work, it is possible to reach a good position. If such an incident takes place, it needs to be a learning experience, and we should be careful handling our cryptocurrency holdings. Certain things need to be very confidential.

If you are on a life and death situation then most likely people would really love to live on which giving out their coins would really be that their main choice but there would really be people who would really be fighting for that certain situation yet they dont really like to lose all of the coins that they were accumulating hard for how many years which they dont really like ending up on that way. This is why its really that important that you should really that be secretive on what you are really that dealing with. If you do know that you are holding a considerable or huge amount of coins into your wallet, no matter how trusted your friend is or colleague, it wont really be still that an assurance that you would really be completely safe from those risks of abduction or something that talks about forcibly getting your privatekeys or making those bitcoin transfers.

In to this kind of situation then it would really be just giving you the choice, whether you do love your money or would really be loving your own life?  Grin

There are options to get around this so you don't lose all your bitcoin - I mean, don't store all your bitcoin in one wallet. This advice has been mention thousands of times on this forum and some people may still ignore it. I'm sure some of your bitcoin will safe in any case as the OP fears or in the event of a hack - so of course the advice is very useful.

The main point is - don't keep all your eggs in one basket, this advice will save you from losing all your bitcoins due to unwanted cases. So we may need to practice it in our daily life.

Sorry, I don't get why they are asking for your wallet address if it requires your public key and seed phrases to gain access to your assets. Can this please be explained?

And, if I was in this situation and they really wanted my wallet address then I'll give it to them, and tell them to send a nice amount of bitcoin to my wallet  Grin.

But please, if I'm wrong please, I'd like to know how wallet a dress would pose such a risk.

Will the kidnappers be patient enough to ask for your wallet or they will just instruct you to get the Bitcoin transferred to their own wallet, and if it becomes a choice for you to choose from, then I will always advise that you let go of your money instead losing your life.
After all, you worked for the money and at that, you can still make more money if you keep being alive and well, but most times, such attacks take place because there must be an insider informant who has arranged the kidnapping incident, that is why, it is important to leave a private and low key life in the environment to avoid attracting people to us unnecessarily.

Just give them your money or crypto, you could earn that amount again while your alive.
No amount of money would be enough for our life, at least that is how I see it.
But we are aware that people's life would also meet it's end with the right price on a hitman.

Life is indeed a more valuable thing than anything we have, because many of us have seen that people who are sick will be willing to spend all the money they have to get the best treatment so they can recover as usual and in this case it would certainly be better to give them than us. must lose our own lives.

Yes, when we can survive this, we will be able to reproduce what other people have stolen from our lives and still have a normal life. It is very important in our daily interactions to choose the people closest to us and not let people those close to us have evil intentions towards us.

It's a tough decision where someone will kidnap me just for my bitcoins while I won't reveal the password or security of the wallet holding my bitcoins to anyone. It is very secretive that if someone has a huge amount of bitcoins in their wallet then they must maintain their privacy. In no way can his bitcoins be disclosed to the public because such a situation can happen in the life of a bitcoin holder if he reveals his stashed bitcoins to the kidnappers.

Your friend's query is terrifying and fascinating; it explores human ethics and digital asset security. I would put my safety first in that risky situation. Its about safety, not Bitcoin. Life is more valuable than wealth in such situations. Knowing my family had access, I would likely give the wallet address to secure assets.

Bitcoin security must be strong. Use multi-signature wallets and teach your family emergency wealth management. A safety net lets you compromise.

Accepting and planning for Bitcoin risks is crucial. The extreme situation of your friend emphasizes privacy, security, and backup. Bitcoin empowers and controls finances. Making educated decisions safeguards our assets and health.

What is the conclusion here??

Don't have all crypto assets on 1 device. If the guy had just maybe 10 % of his cryptos on his phone, and the rest on a hardware wallet or a different device he would have lost only the 10 %.....

Maybe he learnt something.  If you are too lazy to properly take care of your stuff you have to learn from experience.....

The $5 wrench attack is the worry when you allow someone to know that you're into Bitcoin. And as for the given situation, I wouldn't give any concrete answer because you can't tell what might happen and what you might do when you're there. But these situations are there to give us the warning and reminder that we should not be too vocal even with people that we know personally. Your safety is in your hands and poverty and problems of people can make them do the nastiest things that you can ever imagine and with that, will make you think whether you should tell things related to Bitcoin or not on a public forum or whenever you've got gatherings with your friends and relatives.

First advise never let people know what you are worth that clearly makes you a target. But if that's the case already then be sure to move certain amount of bitcoin to a another wallet just incase the situation becomes very real, and not put your family at the risk of losing you and cause them so much pain. Safety first, never put all your assets in a place, distribute it.

Seen similar thread already but given in that situation, how can you be so sure that you will be safe after giving your wallet to your kidnappers? If you have valuable amount of Bitcoin, you wouldn't just let go of your Bitcoin easily so might find other ways of getting it back ince they released you. So perhaps for the kidnappers' pov, it would be best to end your life once they got what they want.

But if you do have enough Bitcoin, you wouldn't just disclose it to other people. You can share that you're into Bitcoin to your close friends and family but no need to reveal how much you have unless you really trust that person. Personally, people around me know that I'm into this space but I only share important details to my family.

Well, this escalated too much or was exaggerated. I mean, it's possible that something like this could happen, but the thing is, who's crypto jolder or bitcoin holder will flex or say to anyone that he has a huge amount of holdings? Okay,  let's say it is accidentally revealed to someone you know. Then it's more likely that they will be shocked, but do you think your friends or family will do something like that just for money? If yes, then how could you be a friend or family? At the start, you should know the people that surround you so that you have trust and confidence that they will not do bad things to you just because they are blinded by money. And yes, the best thing is to be anonymous. I know it's okay to share your achievements, but the thing is, is it worth it to flag yourself as wealthy despite the risk?.

For me OP if could someone want my wallet and steal my balance then If I know their wants then I will make a way stop them  and give them a good fight I would not surrender my wallet address if all my savings is there. But  if I do not want it happen then I'll prefer To be silence and don't let other people know that I am holding some Bitcoin  in order to prevent such things happen. Cause once it's expose that we are all holding some Bitcoin then many scammers and bad people will hunt us.

In this situation, I think what you should do is. First, scatter all your assets on different wallets; wise people always say, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket," so if ever you're put in this kind of situation, you can give just one wallet address with the least amount, so all your assets won't be stolen away.

Also, it is a good thing that you let your family members or loved ones know your address, so if ever this happens to you and you get killed (hoping not), at least your family members can have what you lost.

But for precautionary measures, just don't spread the idea that you have a sizable amount of bitcoin or some crypto, even with your friends or family; broadcasting your finances and wealth is very risky. You don't know who has bad intentions toward you. This is better because you're preventing that kind of thing from happening.

You are mixing imagination with Bitcoin or will I call it hallucinations? Hardly you find such case or situation. But if that comes I guess you don't really have an option here. if you have your phrase you can reveal it. Because nothing can be compared or has equality with your life. Your life matters alot and can't be joked with, if your life is spelt you can download as much wallet as posible. That is why we need to have different types of wallet and diversify our portfolio so that If anything happens to one , it will not be applicable to all.

Revealing wallet address is nothing more than hack or nothing more than other scenerio where you will be caught and forced to bring your money in at the point of gun. So its not a new thing. just that the difference is that it's a crypto robbery and not cash but all its rubbery.

Yes. you should give up your bitcoin and give him them because life is more worth than bitcoin anyway.
You should be careful from starting. don't let anyone even your close family member know much about your bitcoin. and if you have to do that then only let them know about a small amount.
telling them about your whole bitcoin holding doesn't make any sense.

Belarusian couple forced into van in Phuket and forced to transfer B31m in crypto

The couple alleged that a group of men abducted them in front of a restaurant near the Lor Rong intersection in Muang district around 10pm on Monday. The couple were taken in a black Hyundai van and forced to transfer US$901,200, or about 31 million baht, worth of cryptocurrency.

Yes, it seems we have to realize that currently bitcoin is a very valuable asset which of course we have to be able to look after our assets and indeed having a lot of assets of course the risk is also very high therefore we have to be anonymous so that people don't know that we have a lot BTC even though they are friends We ourselves are Bitcoin investors, even if he knows we have BTC, of course don't tell him that we have a lot of BTC. and I think it would be better to store btc in many wallets so when the bad guys ask for bitcoins, our give them a bitcoin wallet that only contains a few bitcoins and our can still have a lot of bitcoins.

but if something like that happens, I personally think we should hand over our BTC to the person who robbed us because I think life is more valuable than Bitcoin and of course we can get Bitcoin at another time. However, an incident like that is something we don't want, so it would be better if we prioritize caution, maybe putting Bitcoin in more than one wallet would be a good solution.

To be honest, until now I have never told my friends and relatives how much BTC I have and when people ask me how much BTC I have, I just admit that I only have a little Bitcoin. because it could be that other people commit crimes against us because of the actions of our own friends who tell other people that we have a lot of BTC.

Indeed. Life should always be valued higher than money. Even if you lose your Bitcoin during a dangerous situation, you can always earn or acquire it again. Therefore, risking your life for the sake of keeping your Bitcoin is nonsensical. In such a situation, it's better to start a new beginning rather than risking your life for money. It's unreasonable to have to decide between your safety and your wealth.

If you are rich you will be known irrespective of how you made money, so it's just every rich man's nightmare to imagine in that situation. With bitcoin we also can keep the funds safe because you can have X number of wallets and every wallet may not linked with others to know your real net worth in bitcoin which will make a third person who you send funds too can find your remaining balance.

If we are in a dangerous condition like that, of course we have to choose to let go of what we have and choose to be able to continue living the life we have, because lost Bitcoin assets we can still collect again at another opportunity and if we lose our lives in an incident like this, of course it would be a very ridiculous thing if someone did that, because we will be able to get the property they stole back after we survive the threat, but if we don't give them what they ask for, of course they will do something that will endanger their lives. Of course, it is very detrimental to risk the wealth we have with the life we can only get once in our life.

If it comes to the point where armed robbers get to ask you to choose between your bitcoin or your life, choose your life over Bitcoin. Your life is worth more than bitcoin, and if you're alive, you can hustle another money and buy as much Bitcoin as you can. But c'mon mate, how will the armed robbers know you've Bitcoin if you've not been talking too much? So trust no one and keep your bitcoin investment very discreet.

At first those who got you kidnapped didn't know you have a sizeable amount of bitcoin and perhaps, you have already given your wife or children your keys. To me what to do is to just call your wife to sell some percentage of bitcoin and got you out from those people since they don't know you own any bitcoin and for no reason you should tell them about your holdings or a totaling of your holdings, so, if you must live you don't have to go tell those kidnappers that you own bitcoin or have some specific amount of bitcoin in your custody.
Btw I don't think you should involved yourself in such discussion with your friends because sometimes they are gradually pulling your legs and could plan against you.

The point is that, why would people around me wouldn't know, and people who are not around me would know? Even in theory, if someone kidnaps me because they know I have money, how does people around me doesn't know that? How did the stranger figured out who I was?

I mean in real life I have no worry like that, I do not have enough money to bother anyone to kidnap me, but even if I did, my family would know it before some stranger, how could some stranger would figure out who I was, where I live, my schedule so they could know best time to kidnap me. Also... how do you kidnap a grown man, this isn't the movies, you would put up a fight, you might get hurt, or even killed, but doubt they will be able to get you somewhere isolated from the world. This question makes no sense to me.

OK, lets assume you make the impression on this forum that you have a lot of Bitcoin and I want to get them....

1) I would respond to your post here a couple of times in a positive manner.

2) I would shift the conversation after some time to a topic that should best not discussed in the open, for some innocent reason and start private conversations

3) If all goes well we would likely have established a little bit of trust.

4) Then I would mention a conference about Bitcoin in some fancy place and hinting that I am involved in organising the event.

5) In case you sound interested in the event I would then mention I could get access to a "press package"  for you ...kind of discount of 90 % for flight and accomodation

6) At this stage I would send you a pic of a lovely lady who will greet you at the airport and ask for your details.

7) After meeting the lady you will be offered some drinks and feel very soon very tired...

Cool Then you wake up, you have a very friendly discussion with me about your bitcoins .....in some secluded area....

Something like that - it is not always about attacking people outside there house ::::

This is where you will learn how important privacy is, the kind that you don't let even small details know or don't give out a hint that you have a bitcoin holding, especially on social media, because there are many people behind the accounts who are spying in the actions and movements of people on their accounts. Let's go back to your question OP, if I'm in the situation and my life is at stake, I still can't decide whether to fight or just let the kidnappers get my wallet add...I don't know what to do either but maybe the initial action I will take is to give the wallet add though I don't have much bitcoin on that wallet. My life is more important to me because I know that the money will come back to me in a triple amount of what I lose.

I think the best approach would be not tell anyone on the first place. Where I live, crypto is totally banned. So I don't go around telling people that I own 100 or 1000 Bitcoins. Only my family members knows that I deal with crypto. But their knowledge is also limited on this topic. Attracting unnecessary attention would be the last thing anyone would want. I would just pretend to know nothing.

I am not sure if this should be a specific question for bitcoins or could be looked at in general for anybody that has money. Let's assume you have a safe at home with a lot of cash, gold or even art in it. All of that would make you very attractive for criminals to try and steal that money of you. Bitcoin is just one type of wealth we have and how far should be go and protect it? For me my health is more important than any money. What good does it do for us being rich, when we are dead or so sick that we can't enjoy our money? Depending on the kidnapping situation I would very likely give them my money. To often I tread stories where people tried to fight off criminals only to get killed in the process. We can always make more money later, but our health we might never get back. Also there is always the chance that the police will catch the kidnappers later and might recover some of our money. So, better not too tell strangers or people we don't trust how much money we have and where it's invested. There is no benefit from sharing all those information publicly and can only lead to problems for us in the long run.

If op understood the meaning of privacy then he would learn to be very careful while discussing with people about bitcoin or how much we have invested in bitcoin, In general whatever amount we have in our custody be it bank account we aren't meant to disclosed it to people be it family member because it brings unnecessary enviness to us and that is what raise to them planning to get you kidnapped because we were too open to tell them about our money, earnings, and investment worths.

We can be so less in relating with people about our general life aspect, and again we should be that dum in a way we can't use our common initiatives to work on why because anyone who got kidnapped can be free through his money and life is more precious than any other thing except such person doesn't value his life before going further making all sorts of arguments where he might got killed and after which whose then enjoys the money.

It's for your own good if you keep your mouth shut and never talk about having any Bitcoin, and if you have done it already, telling many people in your area, just pray that they don't believe you, because if they do, you might be a target, it's better to abandon that area and find your home somewhere else, where not much people know you.

But why not just accept that precaution is better than cure? Instead of fearing for your life? It's better not to say anything related to Bitcoin, sooner or later people will catch up, all those that don't know about Bitcoin will eventually know about it, lets be mindful of what we feed the public, not every happy faces we see every morning are good people inside.

Bitcoin was meant to be kept in privacy manner, you cant be a Bitcoin millionaire and still live in a country where there are alot of insecurity, for example, like my country, i would rather leave and travel to another country but you should be fine if you keep your mouth shut.

I have lots of Bitcoin addresses & a number of different types of devices I store my stash on. If I was kidnapped or tortured I’d give up one of the devices and say that’s all I had. If the kidnappers were dumb I might try & send money to the kidnappers Bitcoin address with a fee of 0 sat/byte, wait for them to leave, then when it doesn’t confirm, in a couple weeks it drops from the mempool & then it’s back in my wallet.

Just thinking:

If someone really pisses you off you could spread rumours that the percon has a big amount on Bitcoins.

If this guy gets kidnapped  there are no Bitcoins he can hand over, because he has no...... could end with a very painful experience....

Curious when stories about this type of situation start to pop up

It is such a weird feeling to me that people would go around telling people that they have money. I mean don't get me wrong I am not rich so I can't understand, if one day I become rich maybe I would understand why rich people say they are rich.

However, if you ask me right now as not a rich person, if I ever got rich then I would not tell anyone ever, it would be impossible for anyone to figure out I am rich, not even my spouse, I would live a great life with them, they would know that we are not poor, and I would just pay for stuff, but not crazy stuff, telling your wife that you can afford that 800 dollar phone, is not the same as telling her you have 2 million dollars, if you tell her you can get the phone then you get the phone, but if you tell her you have money, it's all gone in a year. So, always be careful.

You need to have several wallets, one is the main one, the other is for robbers, which has bitcoins, but there are not as many of them as on the main wallet. Then I think you can outsmart them.
