The trick may make your merits appear different then the way they actually are, in order to see your actual merits you may copy your profile and open in another browser where you aren't logged in, or you may click on Profile>Merits to see the actual merits.

I already saw some outcome of this adjustments, a negative merit (-161 Loudmouth ) is way too much theymos, maybe you can just remove them instead.

Like, do you mean if I see a post or question that needs a simple answer and the idea I have to answer that particular question tools me only 15 characters (which I know is not possible) for dropping a simple comment, that way my merit count will reduce? 
 
What about simple replies that have no character but come with only an image on them, which sends a clear message? How will that also be regarded? 

That’s correct. Theymos is clearly trying to ruin the forum. He probably has something against beginners ranking up, he doesn’t add merit sources and has come up with a new system to make it harder for accounts to rank up. Sad day for bitcointalk.

Leave it to theymos to ruin everything.  Right when we were starting to have fun, he ruins it.

It seems like my merit increases automatically even though no one gave me merit. I suspect this thread is the reason.

In recent years, it seems that a lot of people have been making low-value posts just to get paid. To address this, I've added a merit "cost" to posting: from this point forward, for every 15 characters you post, you will lose one Merit point. This should eliminate any incentive to make low-value posts.

Any halfway-decent poster should be able to earn much more merit than they lose due to the penalty. But I recognize that some good posts are occasionally overlooked. So to counterbalance the penalty, I also added a system whereby you will earn a bit of merit just by reading posts. If you want to write a lot, you'd better do some reading as well!

For both the penalty and the bonus, this applies only to your merit score, and does not affect sendable merit (sMerit).

Let me know what you think of these adjustments.

So, if I read a lot, my merit will increase? This looks easier than before, and I prefer this system compared to the old system which made me apathetic about being able to rank up

My merit count has decreased from 328 to 96 after making the first post today. Merit changes have an impact on rank, from Sr. Member become Member.
It worked well theymos and was a surprise.





I tried to think about experimenting by trying to open the forum via a new incognito tab on the browser I was using, the change did not occur for me and for several accounts from other users.

I like this surprise.
