No one goes to gambling with the intent of doubling their profits all the time and not being negatively affected one way or another. You're right, many are gambling on a continuous range because they feels like they have won enough and have loose as many games as well and will be glad to make the last bet by doubling the amount of money used for stake in other to have an overall winning round for the day, but things doesn't turns to work out as planned in many of the cases, because we cannot predict for gambling and we may end up losing the more instead of winning the more.

But that's the reality in gambling, sometimes we good and win but mostly we don't so, acceptance is the key when we are doing it. And even if we have the aim to double our money, it won't happen at most times.

This is quite a good strategy considering the fact that you are able to control your emotions and continue with the strategy, it makes you a disciplined gambler.
The odds depends from person to person. I mean for some 2x might be a little risky and so they can consider the same strategy with 1.5x odds.
For some gamblers, 2x might not be sufficient and so they can opt for 3x or more depending on their risk taking capability.
We can even decide days on which we can set the odds for example Monday is for 1.25x, Tuesday is for 1.5x and so on..

the goal is to limit the amount of money wagered and the amount of winnings that is considered satisfactory. Of course, everyone will have a different winning target.
but what becomes a little boring is when the game just drags out the game for a longer time. like when you lose 10 rounds and then win 10 rounds, even though the value is definitely different, if the situation keeps repeating itself it will only lead to boredom.

This is why I change the games that I play because that way atleast I am playing something different.
