Exactly, the way to minimize losses is not to add to other losses, meaning you have to stop betting and never add other funds to recover losses, because there is no guarantee that you can recover losses and you will even add higher losses. I don’t know if your friend is not possessed by something else. Why on earth will you make such a big mistake? You have done this before without having anything tangible. You have a point, but it is not every time that you will let your friend learn in the hard way because it might end up affecting you as his friend and his family, not him. For instance, in this situation, if he goes to collect another loan to continue playing games and he ends up losing all the money and also has nothing to pay the loan, he will end up committing suicide, and if that happens, his family will be responsible for paying the loan. And if that happens, you, as his friend, will like to be involved. If the family has less effort to pay the loan, you will find it hard to endure seeing your late friend's family suffer because of his mistake. 
 
That is why you have to prevent it the first time rather than wait for it to occur. You will find it hard to cure, so to me, it doesn't seem like a nice idea to let him learn the hard way because it might be dangerous.
