We know that theoretically, taxes are supposed to serve as one sure means that a nation gets her revenue from and that such revenue is what's used for building basic social amenities like roads, hospitals and the creation of systems that help a nation to thrive in her developmental agendas and that in an ideal situation if followed the right way and all the proceeds used in the right way, it can surely foster the development of a nation, but can we say our tax system is meeting up with it suppose purpose? Or is it just serving as a medium of extorting money from poor citizens?

We're familiar with what is happening in our local markets where old women who are just struggling to survive are made to pay huge taxes every week with no evidence to show in the market as to whether the money has helped in making the market environment better and the taxi drivers, shop owners, POS operators, and even government workers also have their tales to share regarding how much they have to pay just because they own a small kiosk or are doing a small civil service work.

Because of the increased amount that's paid as tax in the market both from the wing of some supposed government personnel and agbero boys that also come in to take their share, you find market women increasing the price of things and taxi drivers also increasing cost of transportation because they have to buy tickets, pay agbero and still settle police officers that have positioned themselves at the different junctions to extort from the poor masses.

While we are complaining that the naira is gaining while the price of things has refused to come down, let's also understand that part of the reason why things are expensive in the market is because of the high taxes that are imposed on market women and taxi drivers and the only way they can remain in profit is to increase the cost of goods.

That double taxation na really big problem for the country because every tier of government dey rely on taxing to generate income mostly wey dem dey call IGR. Both federal and state governments dey do this and that they follow build cost wey dey go high and cause inflation. Like bank charges and deductions plenty of different types and na so your money go dey reduce always. However, the major thing wey dey cause this high prices na cost of running generator because of no light and then market people go add am to production, again cost of fuel dey follow increase transportation.

normally all this small small money when de comot for our business people hand in form of tax de still come back negatively on buyers in firm of increase in price of goods. If like say them de regulate these money when agbero boys de collect from these women that one for no be issue but when you make an compulsory say them must de registered before selling in Thier small shops and then weekly or monthly remittance still de live them enter different channels all in the name of tax and dues, na just normal thing say them go transfer aggression on the buyers in form of increase in the price of goods.

This one self no be only naija issue but na wetin de worry different part of the world as e be say the taxation system no de transparent at all. When Bitcoin been come out early, part of wetin some guys use promote am na statement like "tax is frauds" and the truth be say even snacks when we de eat de tasked and almost all business still de pay task and we no come de see wetin government de use tax payers money de do.

Of course if the right senses of the government and the respectable authorities would utilize the revenues of taxations and also implementing tax structures respectably it'd be a resourceful means to enhance an economy system including the accessibility to execute community projects such as infrastructures to generate more incomes and also utilizing it on the amenities to execute public development.

But right as it stance in Nigeria, to whom it may concern is not utilizing those profits from taxes and it's not being well mannered projected on the masses.
You can imagine the government increasing the taxes and utility bills during and inflation period by which even the rich is afraid of what the future would become and the average citizens are struggling to survive while the poor are being hopeless to better lives but the government is ignorant to human sympathies as they increases the bills and taxes on the masses during such hard times and yet development is not coming and no visible accounts of what the government is using those generated funds for.
So I'd say that there's selfishness projects in th now of the system of taxation and its governments and authorities.

When it comes to issues related to paying taxes, some people don't admit for that because the whole process adopted on how it was been utilized seems to be unjust by many, they see the government as a category of people who will levied payments on individuals and deliver nothing back to them in return, despite we have not even consider on the rate on how the government charges on individuals for tax payment.

Double taxation is very common in Nigeria especially here in River State. As a market woman or keke driver, you will be ask to pay community fee, marching ground, maintenance and security fee, and the worst part of it is that nobody wants to know if you have sell anything for that day or if you can afford to pay at all. I have witness how an old woman who sell peppers in the market was harass and her goods throw away inside the gutter because she was pleading for more time as she couldn't afford to pay for her fees.Double taxation is simply another means of stealing from the poor.
