Last Active: (Recently) - What is this?

I discovered that for some users the time of last activity on the forum was no longer displayed and instead it was written "recently". Is this some kind of bug or innovation on the bitcointalk?

Is this a new feature on the forum?

Sorry, @xandry, you were just the first one to fall into my hands. This is not an isolated case and a similar inscription is visible on many other users.

Which explains why users would be seeing this after activating certain forum functions or perhaps you would have noted that Little Mouse not so long ago created a similar thread which is now locked.

It's one of a new reviewed and added feature in the forum but I've been questioning on myself that why don't this changes take place within all forum members instead of the shuffling life some users accounts would experience it while some wouldn't? Or could it be that it's still under a technical test running?

It would be better for this thread to be locked. I do not think there is anything worth discussing anymore on this thread because Hazink gave you the perfect answer which is the link to the post that theymos told us about it. You will not always see offline again on profiles of people that have visited the forum with 3 days if they disable the public to see their online status. What you will see is last seen recently.

The forum haven’t been that counter selective on what users that could access this function. Mind you, it’s not activated by default, neither is it a test run activation. It is a purposeful activation and you have to work through a couple of steps in your profile to archive this status. So, it is a status setup. To activate that,

Simply go to your profile and under modify profile you’ll:
Click “Account Related Settings”
Unselect the boss “show others my online status”
Save changes and your good.

These are about the easy steps to having these setup and the reasons why you might need it is entirely up to you.

I might be cranky and pessimistic, but this is clearly a case of fixing something that wasn't broken.  There are a lot of things on our fine forum that are broken, Big Boss.  Why not turn your attention to those things?

Improvement is what it was called so, we might just have to leave it at that, otherwise you ain’t alone in this.

I think what was improved upon in this version to the status is some way to make users not have a rushed conclusion based on the time stamp for a user’s status. Recently just tells you, everyone is active eventually and accounts haven’t gone extinct but, the posts made would tell the difference.

Somehow, this have never surfaced in the suggestions on meta to be such a major problem but, it’s fit enough to be adopted! Smile

Perhaps I understand where you're coming from, We've got lots of thinks that has been massively requested yet not solved but he implemented a feature which you don't find convincing, I grasp all this but don't be too antagonistic about this feature, his major reason was to increase the privacy feature of the forum. Based on time stamp of activities it seems ones ways are not longer private as much as need, so he went ahead to implement it afterall most of us are privacy oriented people including me.

For the record, he didn't code everything himself, PowerGlove did, so he just copied the code and implemented it. No much work, maybe if you remind of all those ignored suggestions he could have a rethink, what do you think

I can appreciate that perspective, but it's not all that helpful if you ask me. If there are things that you have the energy to tackle, then VWYK (vote with your keyboard), and work on them (like I do... I'm just an ordinary forum member with no special privileges after all, just like you).

You're right that this feature wasn't requested (at least, I haven't seen any such requests), but it's something that came up (almost by accident) during a private discussion and after thinking about some of the thoughts theymos shared, I came up with an especially clean patch that I figured he might appreciate seeing, so I sent it to him. There's nothing worth poo-pooing in that arc that I can see.

(I do plan to work on more widely-useful stuff as time goes on. But, this is a marathon, not a race, and I have to stick to a work routine that keeps me engaged but that also won't inevitably lead to programmer burnout. It's fine to point out that the minor improvements I do aren't as valuable as the major improvements I could hypothetically already have spent time on, so long as you're aware that you're wasting your breath: those types of comments don't affect my planning in any way.)

My man, I applaud you for any work you do for the forum and I wasn't taking a pot shot at you by any means.  C'mon, you all know I'm a curmudgeonly grouch, and if nobody complained nothing would get done.

I can't really vote with my keyboard (as you put it) because I have no expertise in coding, computing, or most of the things that are needed to make changes to a discussion forum.  And fuck me, if I could go back in time I would have majored in computer science--it's just something I never picked up.  Take my bitching with an enormous crystal of NaCl, a'ight?  I've got no hard feelings toward you or even Theymos for that matter.

The change allows people to have modestly improved privacy, which I would generally consider a good thing. If someone has a setting to not show when they are currently online, it makes sense they would probably appreciate it if it was not shown that they were online 20 seconds ago.

These smaller, incremental changes take a relatively small amount of time/effort to implement compared to the user impact. As such, I would expect to see more of these types of small changes and few of the large, elaborate changes that only have a small impact on the user experience, absent any urgent need.

Yup I noticed that too. Some had active recently and some exact time and date. So at a first glance I thought the person with the active recently may have blocked/restricted/blacklisted/ignored my account in some way or so. Lol

Our big boss got recently excited and started making changes in the forum codes. When I was a newbie, I was meant to understand that no matter what I suggested, it won't be implemented. And I discovered it myself that ideas were not implemented. But recently things have changed, a few things have been implemented, such as;

• Adding OP to a topic creator
• 2F Authentication.
• More privacy in online/offline status

Maybe this is because there's someone like PowerGlove who can write the codes as theymos doesn't have the time. As such he can easily keep a blind eyes at any suggestions if no one to write the patch.

Not everyone has to create new thread to ask something similar - I mean, this upgrade announcement thread is still there on the meta main page and isn't hard to find at all. But this is not the case - it's just that other users have to get used to finding out some of the forum's display improvements if at any time they find something unusual. They can scroll down and see what's new - I'm sure they'll find the announcement.
