Can't remember watching a Berlanga fight. I wonder why with a 22 and 0 and 17 KOs, he wasn't given a nice break. It seems he was only given opportunities on regional belts. He seems a nice prospect, at least as far as the statistics are concerned. And though his opponents weren't superstars either, it seems they were also decent opponents, again, at least as far as their statistics are concerned.

That is the keyword there, he is a "prospect", same with Munguia. Both should be the next face of the super middle weight and so they are good in paper and seems to be the perfect boxer for the style of Canelo.

I know Canelo is a fearsome opponent, but this is Edgar's time to shine. This is finally his break. He's got nothing to lose. Even if this would sully his professional record, it doesn't matter much for as long as he gave Canelo a solid fight.

That's what we also said against Munguia, that he will have his time against Canelo. And even Oscar was really very positive that this time he will be able to get his revenge from Canelo. However, Munguia doesn't have the experience, and so it might be the same result here as Canelo might win in a decision.

We have less than a month to go for this fight, and I am surprised that this thread is not that active. I remember the last time when GGG fought against Canelo Alvarez. The thread was hundreds of pages long by this time. So why is the lack of interest this time? Is it because of the lop-sided nature of the fight? Edgar Berlanga is not a strong opponent, and his odds, as per various sportsbooks vary from 8/1 to 9/1. On the other hand, Saul Alvarez has his odds fixed more or less at 1/10 (Betfair has him at 1/18 though).

Previously, this fight was widely discussed about Berlanga who was only chasing big salary or really big fee, it can be said that in this fight he was the only one who could provide money in much larger amount than all of Berlanga previous fights.
But on the other hand, Berlanga himself is one of the boxers who has pretty good record even though it is not comparable to what has been passed or obtained by Canelo who is one of the top and best fighters who during his career only got 4 failures.
If Berlanga manages to defeat Canelo then he will immediately get three titles at once including the WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles and this will be his greatest achievement if he can defeat the champion.
Indeed, Berlanga previously showed pretty good fight when fighting several top-ranked boxers, but I don't think that will guarantee it because Canelo himself is not an easy boxer to beat.

Initially I thought Canelo could fight Christian Mbilli who is an undefeated boxer and is now in the same division as Canelo but in the end Canelo had fight with Berlanga.

Initially I thought Canelo could fight Christian Mbilli who is an undefeated boxer and is now in the same division as Canelo but in the end Canelo had fight with Berlanga.

Christian Mbilli is rated on all 4 divisions, so he is a good fight for Canelo. However, if we think on who Canelo should be fighting? It's only two names, David Benavidez and David Morrell but are interim champions and so those bodies, WBC and WBA should enforce Canelo to fight those guys so that they will only have one champion in their division.

Unfortunately, they can't do anything specially the WBC as Canelo is their cash cow and so they can't mandate him to fight their interim champion. And there is also this thought that Canelo doesn't want to fight them because clearly he is ducking because that fight is a big risk for him to get another L in his boxing records. So he chooses the like of Munguia in May and the Berlanga this September. And maybe Christian Mbilli next year.

Of course. And this time the prospect of an upset is even bleaker. Munguia had higher chances of winning. But he failed. It is highly likely that Berlanga would also fail. Berlanga's experience isn't even comparable to that of Munguia's. The latter is way more experienced and tested. Munguia is also the man that I thought would be unperturbed in the face of a legendary opponent. But, again, he failed.

We won't be expecting much of a more unknown opponent this time around. Canelo is a bit picky these days. But given that Edgar is a nobody, he's got no baggage in him. He's up against the king. Nobody's expecting him to win. And that's precisely why I'm interested in him giving a great fight and perhaps an upset.

Although I will also be cautious as we all know that this is Canelo's division, he hasn't lost any fight in this weight class and has been dominating new comers for the longest time. The closest to bet him is GGG but in the rematch and trilogy, Canelo beat him already.

I am sure the forum was a lot more active 7 years ago, when that fight took place. Unfortunately, many people that were active in boxing discussions have stopped posting in recent months. Canelo vs. GGG was also a really massive event that had a lot of attention even from people who don’t really follow the sport. A tune up fight against an unknown mediocre fighter won’t draw that casual audience and even amongst die hard fans, it’s a tough fight to sell. If it were David Benavidez instead of Berlanga, I’m sure that fight would be massive, but Canelo has no interest in making that fight.

I disagree though, the reason that maybe some boxing fans doesn't post that much on boxing threads is that fight is a mismatch. Like in the Inoue vs TJ Doheny fight, just look at the ood

That first fight was really massive and if I'm not mistaken, it tops the PPV buys that year. But again, after the Bivol lost, Canelo is very selective on who he is going to fight and so it's harder to sell like a fight with John Ryder and even if it is in Mexico was said to be a failure in terms of numbers,

Quote
Those rumors have gotten Hearn’s teapot boiling over, as he insists the true PPV buy numbers are “double” the 150k-200k, meaning that the Canelo vs. Ryder fight brought in a healthy 300K – 400K buy rate. Hearn’s numbers sound like wishful thinking on his part because there was absolutely zero buzz about Canelo’s fight against Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs) in the week of the fight, as most boxing fans saw it as a mismatch and another example of Alvarez hand-picking a beatable guy.

No, I won't be putting my money on Berlanga. He is a huge underdog and he deserves it. And although he may not be like a chick thrown into a snake's pit, in terms of skills it is obvious that Canelo has the upper hand. I'm just interested in how an unknown yet younger, undefeated, taller boxer would solve the puzzle in Canelo. I'd be happy if he succeeds.

Yeah, I agree, Golovkin was robbed of a victory perhaps not just once but twice, the first match being very obvious. Adalaide Byrd has proven himself a blind d*ck in their first fight. GGG was unfortunately defeated in their second rematch though.

This boxer has no chance of beating Canelo, as Canelo knows how to choose opponents he can easily dominate. Although Canelo is strong, he doesn't have the quickness of Mayweather or the talent of Pacquiao. To protect his legacy, Canelo would rather fight an unknown boxer than risk facing a more popular opponent who could potentially beat him. Easy job for him, right?

Yeah, I agree, Golovkin was robbed of a victory perhaps not just once but twice, the first match being very obvious. Adalaide Byrd has proven himself a blind d*ck in their first fight. GGG was unfortunately defeated in their second rematch though.
That's why the trilogy was realized, but as we saw in that fight, GGG was no longer in his prime, as he was already old at that time. In the trilogy, it was obvious that Canelo won, but he could not knock out an aging GGG.

I think when Canelo tasted defeat on the hands of Bivol, he might have flashbacks of the GGG fight specially the first one. And he did try to ran away from GGG and not wanting to give him a rematch until he has to do it. But we waited for GGG to lose his prime.

I also not seeing Berlanga going to win, unless he has the style of Bivol, fast hands, volume punching, good range, has a good chin and long reach. But Berlanga is still very inexperienced and I do not see him possessing that attributes that can beat Canelo.

If you think that way then good for you, Berlanga is 8:1 underdog if you are interested you could put some money on his early. And maybe if the odds grows bigger then you can put some again for a bigger reward.

Although I will also be cautious as we all know that this is Canelo's division, he hasn't lost any fight in this weight class and has been dominating new comers for the longest time. The closest to bet him is GGG but in the rematch and trilogy, Canelo beat him already.

I'm just interested in how an unknown yet younger, undefeated, taller boxer would solve the puzzle in Canelo. I'd be happy if he succeeds.

The blue print was already laid out by Bivol already on how to beat the style of Canelo. But obviously, Bivol is bigger and they fought at the comfortable weight class of 175 lbs and it's obvious that Canelo doesn't belong on that LHW, although he become a champion as he fought a old and aging champion in Kovalev.

Yeah, I agree, Golovkin was robbed of a victory perhaps not just once but twice, the first match being very obvious. Adalaide Byrd has proven himself a blind d*ck in their first fight. GGG was unfortunately defeated in their second rematch though.

Oh yes, that judges who make the mistakes or shall we say watching a different fight as he put Canelo ahead. Golovkin now is done, after that lost he is no longer in his prime and he had that opportunity to win against Canelo in the first fight but was robbed by the judges.

Yes, that why I previously thought that Christian Mbilli was good fit to fight Canelo and it could be very interesting fight, but you are right if there are still David Benavidez and David Morrell as two fighters who should be matched with Canelo.
If look at the various statements from several media, it does show that David Benavidez is the number 1 fighter who should be Canelo opponent and for David Morrell himself is the second option, but in reality Canelo himself decided to choose Berlanga.

Now Canelo is the face of world boxing, the WBC makes Canelo the king who can always be relied on in every fight, he is the only fighter who can generate big hype and of course some profit money.
Just look at Canelo record, giving mandatory fight with fighters who are equal like David Benavidez and David Morrell might make him even bigger if he succeeds, but if he loses maybe you can conclude what will happen.

Yes, it should be David Benavidez, as he is the interim champion, a title that is temporary held by a boxer. And the sanctioning body, in this case WBC should force their regular champion to fight their interim so that they will only have one champion. But since WBC is corrupt and being a Mexican, Sulaiman doesn't want of force Canelo to fight Benavidez.

And then allow him to defend his belt against easy and not so experienced fighter like Berlanga. David Morrell too a co-champion from WBA so the same case. That's why we know that governing bodies in boxing is very corrupt because of the lack of implementation.

We are only one week away from this fight and this is probably the least talked about Canelo PPV ever. The price tag will be $89.99 if you want to watch it legally. This is ridiculously overpriced to watch Canelo’s sparring session against the overmatched and overrated Berlanga. The undercard with some worthless WBA titles being contested is barely worth mentioning.

Hopefully Canelo and PBC can come to their senses and give us something to look forward to when he returns on his usual May date next year. I am already looking past Berlanga because we already know he doesn’t have the skills to be competitive for more than a few rounds where he will be carried by Canelo.

For gamblers, it might be interesting to bet in which round Berlanga gets stopped or if he will go the distance.

Honestly, there's nothing really exciting to look forward to on this match, its going to be the usual Canelo exhibiting how great he is, Berlanga could give a challenge in the early rounds, but once Canelo figures him out, it will be over for him because the skill cannot match up when experience takes over.

Canelo is one example of a champion who wants to protect his legacy, like Mayweather, he is cherrypicking his fight on his way to retirement, but like Mayweather, his legacy will be questioned, and he better have a lot of good answers why he failed to fight fighters who can really challenge his greatness.

That's a great point about legacy. Although no one will deny that Canelo is a great fighter, but he also had a lot of controversial fights, even more than Mayweather, who still by his boxing IQ, stamina and ability to defend himself was superior to almost everyone he fought and the only controversial fight Mayweather had was with Maidana, but Canelo in addition lost fight to Mayweather and Bivol, as I think there should be one more, from GGG in the first match and if not for the judges, GGG should have been declared the winner.
So yes, apparently Canelo has already retired from boxing and is not going to fight serious opponents like Crawford or Benavides for fear of defeat in matches with them and now Canelo will probably pick up boxers who are not a big threat to him, like Edgar Berlanga, who talks a lot, but in fact has only 22 fights with not the strongest opponents. so for Canelo it should be a fairly easy and boring fight.

I would love to see him fight Crawford, but I think Crawford is afraid to go up and challenge Canelo in his weight class. There was a rumor before that Crawford would take the risk, but it has slowly faded, probably because Crawford realized it would be a suicide mission. Unfortunately, Canelo has become boring in his recent fights because it feels like he’s cherry-picking his opponents. While we want him to fight legitimate top-rated boxers, it seems like he’s always going in a different direction.

In the end David Benavidez has his own fight and he has other boxers for his next match after much talked about victory with the imbalance of opponents faced, and for Canelo himself I think it will be the same if he manages to get victory in his fight.
There are only few days left to see Canelo fight against Berlanga and as we know Canelo is the favorite.
So far there have always been many unexpected decisions and indeed have caused lot of negative sentiment from boxing fans, but what can be done to change all this, no one will be able to change it because it is the decision of the WBC board of directors.
But yes we can only accept it and see how Canelo develops later after finishing this fight, if he loses it will be very detrimental but if he wins as many people expect there may also be some things that can make Canelo have to really fight fighter who should be mandatory challenger.

Crawford said he was ready to fight Canelo, but just Canelo avoided fighting him in every possible way and at first he didn't want to agree on the weight class in which to fight, and then Canelo asked for 150 million for the fight and this despite the fact that on average Canelo's fights bring only 300 thousand paid subscriptions, which is very little and it's logical, because everyone has already realized that Canelo has become a boring boxer, carefully choosing his opponents.
Canelo's conflict with Turki happened because the Sheik wanted to see Canelo fight Crawford or Benevides, but Canelo refused and said he was focused on Berlanga.
Although a fight between Canelo and Crawford would allow both of them to retire with huge money, but apparently Canelo doesn't want to take that risk because he is afraid of Crawford.

Erislandy Lara and Austin Trout were also very difficult fighters that arguably should have won by decision against Canelo. When Floyd had controversy against Jose Luis Castillo and against Marcos Maidana, he gave them an immediate rematch and beat them convincingly. Canelo wanted nothing to do with Lara and Trout afterwards, and he needed a third fight against GGG to finally beat him in a convincing manner.

Because judges’ wages and expenses are paid by promoters, they are incentivized to score in such a way that favors the bigger economic draw, as this directly benefits them. Without his financial privilege, I am certain that Canelo’s career would have played out differently and his record would have had more losses.
