This is very relatable. To some degree slot machines on the internet are definitely predetermined, that at least means that even as you've seen the "machine" spin its gears, there's already a predetermined combination that would fall into once the animation resolves. As a web developer there is sometimes a delay or some cache that stored offline in frontend of a website (what you can see) sometimes these are not recorded especially if frontend lost connection with the backend where everything is recorded.

In a sense they are of course predetermined based on a return-to-player rate. In essence all the fancy pictures and graphics are only meant to make it more fun, but in terms of the results it is clear what to expect. If the RNG can be verified to be working properly, you do essentially know that you are going to lose unless you get, well, lucky obviously. Slot games are all about luck and in serious casinos with good reputation you can rely on the results being provably fair I guess. I'm not a big fan of these types of games based solely on luck, but from what little I know about this subject, I believe that your bet was already pre-determined at the moment you agreed to play it and the animation between the "start" and the result is something that was already downloaded to your computer and would run anyway before showing you whether you lost or won.

In other words, the system had already determined your result and probably even the bookmaker already knew about it, but the animation was shown to you, even offline, because that is what makes the game attractive to people (besides the money).
Otherwise, it would be much easier and simpler for you to just roll dice or see some numbers "jumping" on your screen... something that would be extremely boring.
