The reason is because if you invest with the bitcoin even it has a large amount of gain and you have a small amount to invest its just a small percentage of your asset, but in altcoins people tend to try to risk their small amount and hoping it will gives to them with a huge profit, its just basic simple of high-risk reward, could be they win, or they lose because possible the project fails, it rugs, honeypot and etc. there's a lot of possibilities. Others want to stick with the bitcoin because they see already the potential and the history itself and the bitcoin never fails to give what people expect through out. As of currently the halving is done the next price of the bitcoin possible will rose up again for sure altcoins will follow so why not accumulate both.

Altcoins, especially the small caps are no different than penny stocks. People buy them because they think it will 1000x but instead they lose 99% of their value, eventually the last exchange delists them due to non activity and it becomes a 100% loss. They are great in bull markets, especially back in 2017, where people made 100x instead of 10x from Bitcoin, but they are horrible if you buy them at the wrong time and dont get out.

When there is a huge crash, usually BTC loses 10% or so, but alts are known to lose 35% or more in a day, and its not easy for them to regain that value back. There are some that survive like SOL but its a rare case and most just end up going nowhere and people become bag holders for life.

Well, I made a very terrible mistake of recent, though not really of recent since it's already like half a year or so, i took a loan from one of the users on this, a loan of around $1500, invested the money in an Altcoin I had really high hopes on believing that altseason was coming since bitcoin was already above $70,000 at the time, I thought we were about to go into another mega bull run, but unfortunately, I thought wrong.

Long story short is that, I invested that money when the price of the Altcoin was $0.24, but currently as I type this comment, the price of that same Altcoin is now around $0.032, my $1,500 is down to almost nothing, currently around $200, this by far is the worst investment experience I've had, and right now, I have to struggle and pay off the loan money plus the interest.

Telling this maybe someone will learn from it, I should create a thread on this actually, this i will do later..
I really wished I had invested that money on bitcoin, even though the price of bitcoin have also dropped, I wouldnt have lost this much still.

Aside my bad experience with some Altcoins (not all please), you have to know that bitcoin alone can't attend to the entire worlds population cryptocurrency needs, count the many times the bitcoin network has been congested due to several transactions trying to pass through the blockchain verification at the same time, what did that lead to? It lead to exorbitant transactions fees where some people have to pay as high as $1,500 just to get a confirmation on bitcoin worth a mere $100, how does that sound to you?

If all the numbers that are in crypto today were all being served by bitcoin alone, do you think you and I would have had the chance to even afford a bitcoin transaction fee? Let alone own bitcoin itself?

Understand that a tree does not make a forest, Altcoins, some Altcoins have contributed greatly to the success of bitcoin and the entire crypto currency Ecosystem and market at large, this is a fact whether you accept it or not.

Maybe you need correction because there are many examples of people who have been able to make a lot of money by investing in altcoins. Yes investing in alt coins is risky doesn't mean investing in these coins would be the worst fool. Profits will be earned if you invest in potential altcoins like BNB, Ethereum, Solana, Litecoin and hold for a long time.

Investing in potential alt coins has less risk. But if you invest in Memcoins or Shitcoins there is a high risk of losing your money.

You are right i also prefer bitcoin than shitcoins or meme coins, it is because the bitcoin is proven and tested for a long time and it never disappoint its holder it gives huge amount of profit, while in altcoins, meme coins, and shitcoins investment is mostly failed, but there are still investors who wanted to try to invest on this coins, it is maybe because there are also a big profit on it depending on our strategy or how we deal with this coin to make a earnings, there are failed but i believe there are also investors who become millionaire because of some op altcoins so we cannot blame them if they still invest on those coin.

I have been in crypto just over 2 years and 90% of the time i have been invested in altcoins.

I am just a normal guy and don't have a lot to invest each month so for me the risk of altcoins is worth it - I am not going to 10x or 20x my money with Bitcoin anytime soon but with altcoins this is easily possible.

Looking at my portfolio, I have a few that are currently 60% down but I have hit a few winners giving me 10x and one which gave me a 30x so I am in profit currently overall and we still have the bull run peak months to come over the next 6 months or so so things are looking good.

Bitcoin is great if you have a lot of money to invest, my plan is to use quite a bit of my altcoin profits I make from this bull run to then invest in Bitcoin in the next bear market in 2026 and then hold Bitcoin till 2030 at least.

After everything, what you failed to add up is that it worth the risk in the end, way better than visiting a casino and start gambling, because if you end up selecting some very good altcoin you will make insane amount of money, Kaspa and very few numbers of alt did 100x this bear market if you get in since 2022-2023, Bitcoin can't give you this numbers, let's put aside the fact that Bitcoin is the safest, I accept this, but if you aren't lazy about doing your own research very well you will reap big gains.

learn how to identify good ones, play your cards using diversification and sit back, this should not stop you from having some Bitcoin as well but most of your gains will come from altcojns.

I don't think everyone who invests in altcoins is stupid, because there are some altcoins that have good fundamentals for the long term as you mentioned. It's just that many novice traders who invest in altcoins actually lose, actually this is all their own fault because they don't do research first and the worst thing is that these novices invest in new altcoins. Many can profit from altcoins and many also lose from altcoins. Most altcoins are not for the long term, so if you don't have the skills to analyze altcoins, it's better to invest in bitcoin because bitcoin has been tested from the past until now.

I know most newbies may think that Bitcoin is already too expensive for them to buy the whole units and that is why their ignorantly dive on altcoins which will lead them to they loses on the long run unless they are lucky, and also there was a time when altcoins hard a boom in their market, around 2016 -2017, this also have created false positive results around altcoins for most newbies.

But for those that have been around in the market for a while, we know how the whole game is played as far as cryptocurrency is concern and we know the position where altcoins can play a role, but above all, altcoins is not the best form of investment as far as cryptos concerned.

I don’t insult anyone that prefers altcoin investments over bitcoin, if I can advise them about bitcoin investment and they don’t listen, then all I do is allow them to invest in whatever they want, they have a reason for that, so they shouldn’t be insulted. But the risk in investing in altcoins is just high, if anyone is holding a coin for a very long period of time, then it’s just better to invest in bitcoin and not altcoins, because anything can happen to altcoins at any moment, and it’s going to be painful to hold a coin for so long, but later to discover that everything is gone or doesn’t even have value when you want to sell.
