If he helps everyone, then that's good. What difference does it make how he earns? His case.

That's why I don't like politics. On that point and that person's situation is no way out, he has to protect himself so that he won't be at the center of the eye of the corrupts. He's got a family and his life to protect but it's still all about morals. But if you're in threat and it's not only your life that's in the cargo of being in danger, you just have to stomach all of these lies and deception and stealing that's being done. It's just sad that even the best and brightest and most honest will have to go through with this and it's about a battle in the mind although good deeds are being done with that money, still it came from something bad and wrong.

Well, if we'd think about it, the money really came from the people, the taxes of everyone and it should be returned in the form of service like scholarships and all of those that have been mentioned but it doesn't have to put someone into jeopardy and in the midst of it for the others to keep on doing corrupting practices and swindling people's money.

Politics is dirty, those who do politics cannot keep themselves on the right path especially if their environment does not allow them to live in their own character no matter how right the path is. Corruption and bribery are the most prevalent in government jobs.  However, it is not right to say whether the poor can be helped by bribe money.  But if there is official pressure and he does not want to spend the money himself, then he can help the poor. It becomes very difficult to save yourself when there is corruption all around.

He knows that those funds he receives are illegal but he vowed not to use them for his personal needs. What is your opinion on this matter?
so in essence, when the law eventually catches up with them for the groose misappropriation of funds, he's going to give excuses that he uses his allotment for the establishment of local project in the community? And it's supposed to be understandable that he's trying to act like a good person in the midst while still benefiting from the faulty system? what he did is not different from what most politicians do. They take the allocation that's supposed to be used for the needs of the masses, embezzles the most of them and use just a slight fraction of it for some developmental projects so as to shut people out from complaining.

If everyone keeps quiet and refuse fighting against faulty systems, how will we experience positive change in our society?  If you're in a company of people who are involved in things that's contrary to what's right for you, don't try to paint yourself as the good egg in the place. Walk away and save your conscience and reputation from being associated with what's not right. Right is right and wrong is wrong. Doing something that's right to cover up for what's wrong doesn't make your wrong right.

What you said is not wrong, but if you were him, what would you do in that situation?

One thing is certain, if he stands up and exposes the hypocrisy of the rest, he will be removed from office or worse, he will be killed. Not only that, the safety of his family members is even threatened, or worse, ends tragically.

If you live in a country that values human rights like the United States, you will likely be defended by the opposition party for your actions. But if you come from a third world country with a corrupt political system: either you quietly resign or you die if you don't adapt to them.

Politics is not as simple as you think, just stand up, expose and fight, you will be supported by everyone and become an icon. Once you enter politics, you either die or join the crowd.

In my country, many honest politicians suddenly died and their families disappeared overnight, those stories are still circulating among the people and that is why no politician dares to stand up for the people these days.
Stealing is morally wrong but in politics it seems to be a normal thing for them, they will embezzle public funds without any remorse and any new politicians that is not willing to join their looting becomes a threat to them. I believe that it's easy to criticize from the outside but if you hear about how these corrupt politicians makes life unbearable for incorruptible politicians then you will understand that it is a dirty game. And quite unfortunately it seems like if you don't have what it takes in terms of being crafty then you don't have what it takes to become a politician.

For a politician to have the guts to fight corruption among corrupt politicians depends on how human rights and freedom of expression is being respected in that country, whether they are practicing true democracy or dictatorship regimes. I believe that in a country like America, a politician can speak out against corruption and get justice and protection from the government with support of the people. But in countries where human rights are not respected it's either that you join them in corruption or don't become a politician. Aspiring politician must know how politics is played in their countries before contesting and decide whether he or she can fit into the system. Fighting for true change is not easy in a corrupt government, it can cost the politicians to live in fear and even lose of life.

As a citizen of a country with a corrupt regime, your input is just spot on.

The last decision he can do is retired from his job and leave everything related to corruption. But that will depends on him because he needs to think more about that.

Is that really the best solution for him? If he resigns, will corruption end? If he quits, the corrupt money will be transferred to someone else and the people he used to help will no longer be helped. Not to mention, how would his family survive if he was the sole breadwinner in the family? There are too many issues to think about in this situation and I don't think quitting is a good solution.

None of us have ever been through what he is going through so giving advice is pointless. I think he should find the solution himself and the only advice we can give him is: he should do what he thinks is right and will not regret it.

Some people are willing to take his position and enjoy the stolen funds without giving anything back to society. His community will not support his resignation because he has brought so much development to them. But his major concern now is that he might be in trouble if the account of the local government is audited after their administration. But his solace is that at least he used the money to touch lives and not for personal gain. So it seems he has made up his mind not to resign but to keep supporting his people.

I have a friend who was elected into a political office. Before he was elected he was well known for his uprightness and integrity. Now, his new office is filled with corruption in the form of looting of government funds. He told me that when the allocation from the central government comes, the chairman of the local government will call them and give them a large amount for their upkeep. But they still receive their monthly salary and allowance.

He is well aware that the allocation was for the development of the local government, but he is forced to take it since almost all the elected officers are collecting it. The first time he rejected the money, he received a threat that he would be impeached or violently attacked. This is because his colleagues are scared that he might reveal the corruption that is going on in the local government.

My friend decided to set up a foundation that gives scholarships and builds schools. With the illegal funds, he usually receives every month, he has been able to finance the education of many poor students in his ward and has also built and refurbished a few schools.

He knows that those funds he receives are illegal but he vowed not to use them for his personal needs. What is your opinion on this matter?
Although depending on the country where such situation arise, because in a third war country where opposition do not have a voice to challenge government in power it becomes an issue, however  your friend who is in the lower chamber arms of government is not a corrupt minded person like it is rightly stated here, building schools, given out scholarship and sponsoring education is one of of the sole responsibility of the lower chamber in the legislative arms of government, so to me he has not misappropriate the fund in his care, what is important  is keeping good record of documents on how he is receiving and spending.

I call it a systemic corruption in most cases . It's the system which have become corrupted that has made it difficult to escape from the corrupt system. I have the same thoughts as you on the level of corruption which have eaten up our public and civil service. Instead of stealing these funds and eating it alone, it better to share it with the less privileged persons around us.

He isn't using it for his personal needs, but he is using it for his personal political interests, anyway. So what is the difference after all?

He isn't a Robin Hood kind who is retrieving tax money back to tax payers. He is stealing from tax payers in order to boost his political career through an educational welfare program.

This is a common strategy used by politicians, especially in miserable areas where people don't have money for anything, so they will be eternally thankful to this politician for what he has been doing for the community, although they don't know the money to fund this entrepreneurship is coming from their own pockets...

well, according to religion and ethics..... wrong is wrong, stealing is stealing.
Islam says be clear for what is right and wrong....night cannot become day and day cannot become night.
Taking funds but not using for ownself rather spending in wellfare.....is like, trying to keep duniya and Akhirah both side by side.
it cant be done...none of any, neither worldy people is taking him respectfully nor even in eyes of Allah he is gaining any reward .
but obviously ,whatever your friend is doing...he is just trying to satisfying his own conscious.

Pray for you friend may Allah Subhanatallah give him haddaya ...and help him if he really want to walk on Sirat e mustaqeem!

Yea I agree, I think its very commendable that this guy has decided not to use those funds
which should go to either or both the running of the country or to fund various community
or charitable developments, like schools, health centres, public transport etc.

Instead this guy is redirecting the redirected public finances back to public causes, its like
he takes it on one hand and pays it forward on the other while those in need benefit.
He has moral ethics and is not letting the job corrupt him.

Some people say corruption is still corruption, and that is true but at least this corrupt money is being used by him for noble purposes instead of if he resigns then the money will flow into the pockets of other corrupt politicians. He made the right decision not to quit his job and continued to use that money to help the poor. Maybe his contributions will not be recognized by the government but at least he has helped a lot of people and that is what politicians should do instead of just focusing on fame and power. He is not a good politician in the eyes of the government but he is a good politician in the hearts of the people.

I honestly do not see the man's actions as stealing. OP has already stated that the money being shared by these corrupt politicians is meant for the development of their local governments and for the welfare of their people. If this upright politician decides to give back his share of the money to the people he is representing, then he is doing the right thing. The only wrong thing he is doing is working with corruption politicians and keeping quite about it.

From all OP has said, it is obvious that politics is indeed a dirty game in that country where the good ones are easily eliminated and replaced with the bad ones. It is easy for those who are not in his shoes to advice that he speaks up or resigns when they don't know anything about such a political environment.

If I am to be in such a position, I will not resign because my resignation will not end corruption.

In this regards he did not steal the money. He is not of the opinion to misappropriate public funds but it was a threat to his life and job for him to say no. Even if he rejects his own ration, others will take and also set him up.
He should just continue using the funds for social corporate responsibilities. Even if the law question him. He can proof that he used his own portion for government responsibilities (cateris paribus)

If you also agree with everything he does and if you were him, you would not resign and continue the job he is doing. I think he made almost no mistakes here.

If you don't continue your work, don't continue to pretend to cooperate with those corrupt politicians, where will he get the money to continue helping the poor? If he doesn't keep quiet, can his family maintain a peaceful life? What he did was sacrifice for his family, sacrifice for everyone so it cannot be said that he did anything wrong.

For me the person in question have done allot for investing the money to help the citizens which is in turn in main purpose of development or carrying out infrastructure in a society, in my opinion considering the nature of how politics is been played in our society it's clear that if you can't win them you joined , though it would have been better the leave the seat but in our politics you make yourself vulnerable for assassination the people will definitely come after you for they know you will leak their secret, the best is to help the society you find your self within your reached but keep on pushing vital information and build team that will aid you support to kick against the injustice or misappropriation of the fund .

Resigning such position may not even solve the problem instead create more room for embezzlement to double itself because if there are some opposition you do put forward where there is no it make everything easy for them to make their way.
The saying fighting corruption need different tools and strategies is very correct because if you fight it without good preparation it will banced back pulling you with greater force.
The reason different positions exist in our government is to bringing the required development down to the root that is why we even have councilor for example a councilor at local government is meant to meet the need of it's people through what comes out in the government weather legal or illegally any how they share the fund do well to satisfied the purpose your people put you there.

My opinion in this accept is good to collect it from them whenever he is been given the money, without having any fear or doubt, but if only his clear within himself that the allocated money given to him is not going to use it for his personal gain, and whenever his call upon by the law he can account for it, because whenever they give him and he alone refuses to collect they can turn everything against him and will all see him as a spy among there midst. By the way his using the money for a good deeds but from a bad source, there is a Qur'anic verse that stated taking from public funds without a rightful claim is one of the gravest prohibitions, as it constitutes a form of misappropriation.

the truth still remains that a thief is a thief.what is stealing? it is the act of taking what doesn't belong to you for yourself.it doesn't matter what you did with stolen money because the money was never yours in the first place to begin with so you had no right to even do anything with it.some people steal from wealthy people who have made legitimate money and then try to justify it by saying they want to give it to the poor without even considering that the money they stole is someone's hard earned money.if you cared so much about the poor then you should make your own money and then help the poor with it and not using another persons money for good deeds when you know money is difficult to make.

OP, ask your friend to try to be polite only from the posts she's on.  Society will not stop being corrupted until all the ranks of an administration from the highest to the lowest are freed from corruption. Your friend may not be able to change those above him but those below him will surely respect him and think twice about wrongdoing.  If you try to be fair and honest in your position instead of helping the people of the society with unjustly stolen money, you will give something to the society in real sense.  There will be many obstacles in this work, but if it is won, humanity will win.

From my understanding of this. Your story is that your friend is a good person and he will be well known as a good politician but that doesn't give the excuse that when they are talking about people who spend public funds he shouldn't be mention, as far as you are a politician you will be counted among the one that spent public funds, I don't blame your friend for saying he is not collecting the money giving to him but if it was me I will collect it and even ask for more, I will never reject money and no one will come to me and said that I'm spending public funds.

Your friend makes a good decision because he can use that to make a good name for himself and still get a vote when he wants another post, building schools and helping the poor is also a good thing that everyone capable can do, especially politicians, but as he doesn't want to take the money from the beginning I think he never know anything about Politics and when they want to judge them he will also be among those that spend public funds, so he should take it.
