Hi all looking at setting up the safest option of the two I am looking at purchasing a jade and would like to know if the safest option it to set it up with QR code I’ve watched this video from bitcoin university https://youtu.be/Q4gpVF-ATAg?si=ckDnZG5d7uiPmOMfHe does use the jade air gapped he plugs it in to the computer, I had a look at the blue wallet but it seems when you make a blue wallet wallet it generated the seed phrase for you I thought that was not safe to have a seed phrase shown on your mobile also blue wallet seems to be a hot wallet not a cold wallet ? So would I be safer setting up sparrow wallet airgaped with a watch wallet or is blue wallet safe to use thanks all

Blue Wallet is a good Bitcoin wallet for storing assets, but not in large quantities. Large amount of asset storage wallet is better cold wallet that is not connected to the internet directly. Between Sparrow Wallet with Blue Wallet, I might choose Blue Wallet because I have never tried to use Sparrow Wallet even though searching, I have read and studied the features and advantages of Sparrow.

I recommend using the Jade wallet in air-gapped mode with Sparrow Wallet for maximum security. Avoid storing large amounts of cryptocurrencies in a hot wallet like Blue Wallet.

According to the Blockstream website, the Jade Wallet is only compatible with BlueWallet if you are using QR code. If you connected it with USB and it showed your seed on BlueWallet, then you were just creating a new hot wallet that is not secured by your Jade. Both Sparrow and BlueWallet are hot wallets if you use them without a hardware device. If you are using Jade, they are both safe to use as long as you set it up properly and generate the seed on the Jade.

The safest wallets are open-source, self-custody air gapped wallet, because they are never connected to the internet making it difficult for anyone to access your bitcoin, and they are good to store large amounts of funds. Jade wallet is a hardware wallet which is good because it is open source, self-custody and cold storage. However, blue wallet is a mobile hot wallet and is easy to use but it is only good to store small amount of bitcoin for your daily use. Sparrow is a desktop wallet and is good, I prefer using it to blue wallet since I use desktop most times. It's up to you to know what you want.

Both Bluewallet and Sparrow are both online or hot wallets, but you can be able to use Sparrow on an airgapped device which can make you keep the seed phrase to remain offline and using watch-only wallet for tracking transaction and transaction broadcast. But you will need the offline wallet for transaction signing. The device does not need to connect online. We have discussed something similar yesterday on a separate thread that you created. If you use Sparrow on an airgapped device, it is safer than Bluewallet that you generate its seed phrase online just as you explained.

You can't really compared Blue wallet with Sparrow wallet. One is used only for mobile devices and other one for desktop computer devices. Both can be safe if you use them correctly but I prefer using airgapped devices for safety so Sparrow would be a better option. Sparrow is amazing if you want to connect it with hardware wallets and other signing devices, they have the best support from all software wallets.

However, if your choice is between Blue Wallet and Sparrow (for desktop computers), I tend to recommend Sparrow. Meanwhile, for mobile purposes via smartphone, I recommend using Blockstream Green for the Jade hardware wallet.

I would say it depends on how you actually handle your wallets although interms of use with maybe hardware’s ability wallets sparrow edges above it, BlueWallet has its desktop version in each of the operating systems you want and as such with a desktop version you can easily use it as a cold storage or cold wallet like the other wallets. I don’t think there is more distinct difference between any of them basically it is the user who protects its and safeguard his funds and not the wallet. A proper set up airgapped Device for cold storage is my preferred option over hardware wallet though

You are right. This link is more specific about it https://help.blockstream.com/hc/en-us/articles/9601453403801-Download-a-companion-app-for-JadeAlso Bluewallet mentioned how it supports some hardware wallet. It supports hardware wallets that support PSBT. I mean those airgapped hardware wallet, and Jade is one of them. However, if your choice is between Blue Wallet and Sparrow (for desktop computers), I tend to recommend Sparrow. Meanwhile, for mobile purposes via smartphone, I recommend using Blockstream Green for the Jade hardware wallet.
I will prefer those that support QR code

Just acquire Jade and use it to generate your SEED phrase (the step-by-step procedure to do this is here) . Then launch the software client, ( may be Sparrow or BlueWallet, I'm a Sparrow + Passport2 guy), and pair this client with Jade. (In the course of pairing, xpub (relevant to Jade) will be transferred to your software wallet, created for you by the client (but this will not touch your secret stuff relevant to Jade, neither private keys nor SEED). The software wallet with imported xpub will serve you as watch-only wallet (i.e. it will watch for your UTXO but will not be able to sign them itself (i.e when Jade is not paired) when making transactions.

For desktop, probably Electrum is superior. Correct me if I'm wrong.

For desktop electrum is most preferred by many although for bitcoin node runner some prefers the sparrow wallet simply because it can be easily use to connect to your own bitcoin node other than having to have an electrum server for electrum before you get to connect to a node other than there is nothing else that is too serious to differentiate the three wallets as they ok.

Bluewallet is not having Windows and Linux versions but it is having macOS version which is a desktop. Charles-Tim is right. BlueWallet is not only available for mobile devices (iOS-Android smartphones and Apple Watch https://bluewallet.io/watch-app/) but also for the desktop version of macOS: https://bluewallet.io/desktop-bitcoin-wallet/. I once used BlueWallet to test transactions using the Lightning Network.

Okay. So that's what we mean. At least the OP can get the right answer to what is meant. BlueWallet, Sparrow and Electrum are good Bitcoin storage wallets that can be recommended. As for which one to choose, it depends on each user. If one is easy to use, use it. Discussions like this can always bring useful points even though the sheets are not as many as other topics. Some of the wallets you mentioned above have their respective advantages and disadvantages. It would be more obvious to try them ourselves directly. I myself have attempted to wallets (desktop versions) Sparrow, BlueWalet, and Electrum.
I admit. I also learn a lot from you by following the discussions and reading the useful topics you create.

Don't confuse Sparrow and Blue Wallet as standalone hot wallets and as companion apps for the Jade hardware wallet. If you pair those software wallets with your Jade, your seed and private keys won't touch them. You will generate your seed on the Jade. It will either be stored in its memory or you can use it in stateless mode where the seed will be wiped each time you turn off your Jade.
Blue Wallet and/or Sparrow Wallet is only supposed to store your master public key if you aim for airgapped use. A Jade and Sparrow combo doesn't work that good. Sparrow struggles to scan SeedQR codes, making it difficult to broadcast transactions. I would suggest you pair your Jade with Blue Wallet. It's better and easier.
