Warning about Wasabi (cloud storage)

Wasabi is an alternative to Amazon's S3 system - they do not charge for egress of data.  But they have a minimum three month retention policy.

I had a small RAID array that was about to fail.  Since I have fibre, I figured I'd send the 7TB to Wasabi and back to my system.  Ended up costing me almost $300US.

Considering how fast drive prices are falling I don't get why people are not just storing stuff locally.

Considering how fast drive prices are falling I don't get why people are not just storing stuff locally.

1. I did not have space locally and my RAID was failing.
2. BPIP used to run locally, until a Y2K type bug destroyed all my HP hard drives
3. ISPs have clauses preventing hosting large amounts of data (imagine LoyceV's ISP lol)
4. Local internet outages do not affect cloud storage
5. Fire or flood can destroy all local data

Maybe you were talking about personal data, and not hosted data - since my example was personal.

I don't know much about Amazon S3 and similar products but as I understood, you are looking for cloud storage, right? In that case, I suggest you to have a look at Hetzner.com's Object Storage, they have servers in the USA too. Their prices and the quality is unbeatable to my mind. It's very cheap but quality is superb.

That's true too, drive prices are very cheap, especially in the USA.

Yes you were talking about local data so I just figured that was what you were moving.

As for caps, at least here in NY there are no caps on 'business' internet. I have business in quotes since it's the same as home just with a slightly higher price.

Around here you can get 1G symmetrical + 5 static IPs for about $130 a month.
300Mb symmetrical for about $90

No use max for data use.

I just shrug about outages, Amazon S3 has been down for hours now and then, Microsoft has had their issues, it happens

Prices are insane.  I remember purchasing my first 40MB drive for $400CAD.    I also used to run a Drobo.

I am looking to buy a fast network RAID for hoarding all the data I have.  I want one that is expandable, but everything I see if fixed at a number of bays.

For what it's worth: RamNode Cloud charges $0.096/hr for 4 TB storage and 15 TB (ignore the typo on that page) bandwidth per month. I'm not sure how they calculate the bandwidth cost if you push 4 TB in a day, but even if you'd have to pay for 2 weeks to cover the bandwidth usage, it costs only $32.

When i write this reply, 300 CAD is about 211 USD. So it's still far higher than Wasabi's pricing page. Anyway, do you get breakdown/detailed explanation why they charged you 300 CAD?

i cancelled my account.   i probably overestimated the amount - was probably closer to $200US.   But the warning still stands - they will charge you a minimum of three months storage, even if you only have the data on there for a couple days.
