The "cut off" happens in Christianity too, but not done in hate. You could consider it an act of love especially for the healthy ones who are uninfected by evil from infected person.
The cut off is like isolating an infected person from the rest, but the isolated person isn't allowed to rot away. He/she is isolated to heal while being voluntarily "reeducated" with the holy Bible.

I think this is absolutely different from the Christian way of cutting off from ungodly persons who have by their consistent character sworn not to change from their devilish way of living. The political cut-off in this case as narrated in the op is more of one driven by a personal interest motivated by the  desperation for power, and as such anyone who doesn't buy into the way is considered an enemy.

What makes democracy beautiful from all other forms of government is about the freedom it wields to people to make their own choices and respected by others that way in as much as it doesn't cause harm to next person. But in today's politics, power tussle has go so extreme that value for family and relationships is threatened. In my town a similar subject took place years back where a father shot his own son because he was on the other side of the divide in the state politics against his political ambition.

I'm quite surprised that something like this can happen in USA, I thought that they are the land of the free and people there are free to make their own choices. Political ideologies is not supposed to divide any family, especially in a supposedly "civilized" society like America.

If you pay attention to mainstream media and the way they show their news to the people of the country, then you may realize the division of the country is something which is done quite on purpose, probably to keep the duopoly of the power between the democrat party and the Republican party. There is almost no independent media with a huge audience in the USA and hence, you are being said 24/7 that republicans are evil or otherwise you are being said 24/7 democrats are evil. Inevitably, it will lead to people to confront one another and families to break apart because of politics.
There are already many examples of young people who have being disowned by their republicans parents, because of the extremely liberal thoughts and ideas.

Also, there is the classical example of Republican parents kicking out their house their son because he came out as an homosexual person.

Best thing to do is keep money, religion & politics discussions to a minimum. Say nothing if possible, keep them as  private opinions. Sometimes it’s good to say nothing about such sensitive subjects to risk upsetting family & friends. It’s probably not worth falling out with people over political beliefs.

Nobody has to accept getting along with people who have completely different views about essential matters, like family, life and individual rights. Personally, many of the views and opinions from leftists are offensive to the lifestyle concept I consider to be the most productive and uplifting. During family's meetings, they only talk about ideological matters, under the optics YOU are guilty for the someone else's misfortune.

They completely remove personal responsabilities over the shoulders of people they consider to be victims of society, labelling everyone accordingly to their ethnicity and monthly income. For an example: if someone is poor, all his problems are originated from the abuses practiced by the middle class along the decades (leftists hate the middle class more than the wealthy ones).

By their sayings, it remains the impression that personal effort and work aren't valued. You are guilty if you thrive. I feel a heavy energy when they start talking, directly attached to frustration and envy. The ideology they adopted is the mean they found to manifest it in a "virtuous" way, as they say to be fighting for the oppressed ones.

Nobody should live together with people who make them feel sad, even if it's a family member.

It seems to me this is the bedrock measure of a cult. You have a system of belief, and if you are a disbeliever, you are cut off, whether family or not. It is clearly and obviously intolerant, but the deluded author Salon merely put intolerance in quotes as to not agree with the intolerance of it.

There is nothing that has helped my life more, especially during trying times, than the unconditional love of the people in my life. The shining gem of western conservatism is the unconditional love that seems to specifically originate from Christianity.

Involvement in things like politics often bring about dispute especially when there are 2 differing opinions about a particular situation even amongst family members, colleagues at work and peers but I believe that everyone has the right to different opinions without discrimination.

this sort of cut off especially in the religious sense sometimes pose the question on what true family is all about because in some religion, it even gets to the point where a father can kill his child or even watch his child being killed just because he believes in another religion. truth is that it is hard to watch someone that is close to you join in a contrary part that is against all the things you stand for but completely isolating the individual or even causing harm to the person is on the extreme.

politics is not a cult and often times, what a political party believes in officially doesn't reflect in what every member of the party believes in. today, a democrat might be a core supporter of his party and tomorrow he might just change and join he republican party. there is better way of selling the idea of your party to a brother or a family member other than making him feel like a stranger just because he doesn't align with your party system. in the typical Nigerian society were the people's democratic party and all progressive congress are the two main parties that most persons belong to, there is always a fine line between politics and every other form of relationship. when it it times for politics you play politics and when the season is over you go back to your normal activity and leave out all the sentiment.

But when people at the wrong side are isolating you, instead of you isolating them, it could be considered a self isolation which they do ignorantly for your good. Besides, humans or animals with dissimilar behavior naturally "isolate" themselves. And that could help keep things be more peaceful, prevent the whole from getting spoiled or let people with similar abilities come together to solve problems they are uniquely equipped to solve

even if you are on the right side of the divide, the fact that you can't relate well with your homies just because of different ideology is going to cause you some psychological issue that might progress into natural hatred with time.

If the country is being ruled by an authoritarian regime where people are oppressed if they don't support an oppressive government, that I can relate with it. This goes to show that even in strong democratic countries like America, where everybody has a right to belong to a political party of their choices, we can't expect everybody to be truly democratic.

American politics is considered the most polarized and fierce in the world, and politicians are willing to do anything to achieve their goals. Just like in the last election, they are willing to assassinate each other, seek to imprison each other regardless of how this will bring bad reputation to the United States in the international arena. So you shouldn't be surprised that they also created such a country because political parties need enthusiastic support and cult-like worship to survive.

Not only in the US, I believe these things happen in many other countries too, we just never hear about them. That's why a lot of people don't care about voting, don't care about politics, and they think that if we support politicians, it means we're becoming their puppets .
