new node struggle, weve all been there.. honestly back in the lightning beta days syncing felt like a win but no channels made it useless, i remember thinking cool its done but then you hit the wall of funding channels and managing liquidity.. current merit debate is just a repeat everyone focuses on sync not network health, syncing via voltage is easy now sure but until you open channels youre not contributing and wont see rewards..

using a phone fine for messing around but real node ops need uptime and bandwidth mobile doesnt give.. json proof thing is a moving target especially with protocols updating every few months forget ai stick to github or dev mailing lists where real updates happen.. we figured it out in cycles past but basics remain get your channels open or its all just hobbyist decoration.

I understand this, and I’m not against you making any necessary adjustments towards ensuring that the Quest continues.

I was simply tryna to correct the impression behind what user AakZaki said earlier, which is that opening a channel would show people who are serious about this quest because of the opening channel fee that they need to pay, which is a very wrong way to look at this. Syncing the full blockchain may be somewhat easy, but it did cost me more than 500gb of internet bundle, which is quite expensive in where I come from. That alone should be able to tell who’s intentional and serious about this quest and not necessarily who’s willing to pay a little miner’s fee…

they only use the prune version, so the 500 GB figure you are referring to here doesn't really work for running LND. Because most of them just use the prune version and then run LND, which is why I say it's too easy to sync Node.

I think the OP also has a hard time verifying, whether the LND really works or not. What if a cunning person only edits the data submitted here just to get merit?

I, as a user who until now is still running LND seriously, am actually willing to help OP to verify that the LND they are running is really running.
Just connect their peers to my LND peers, if it can connect to my peers, I will verify that the node is really runing.

Moreover, they can show peers connected in Thunderhub that it is much more verified in my opinion, and that is why I suggest the merit distribution shift to step 2 Prepare Thunderhub and step 3 Open Channels.

I don’t understand what you’re saying here, if you’re trying to say that folks who run a pruned node don’t need to download and sync the whole blockchain data (which I believe you are) then you’re wrong. Pruning doesn’t mean you don’t have to download the whole 500gb+ data, sure you will, the only difference is that you won’t keep all of the data permanently as the older data would be deleted from your computer while the newer ones are being downloaded. Pruning isn’t for users who are looking for a shortcut or tryna cut corners, it’s simply for those who don’t have enough storage (up to 500gb+) but still wanna run a node. So even if people are using a pruned node to set up their LND, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re doing the wrong thing or they didn’t spend as much internet bundle as those who ran a Full node.

That's actually very natural for anyone who wants to download Bitcoin Core, even if someone who doesn't want to run LN will also experience that.

But did you notice in this thread, notice the title is "LN Quest" not "Bitcoin Core Quest"
I totally understand OP's goal for someone to be encouraged to run LN Quest in full, but what someone who makes an application here does as if it's just like "Bitcoin Core Quest", after successfully running LND and then they stop running after getting 30 Merit, it's very easy isn't it?

In my experience running LN Quest I hardly experienced any errors in step 1 (Sync Node), I instead experienced repeated errors in step 2 (Prepare Thunderhub), even it took me longer to set it up until it finally worked as it should. That suggests that step 2 is more complicated than step 1, and that's why I suggest a shift in the merit distribution.

But it all depends on the OP, because he is the one who has the authority to change it. That's just my advice.

Yeah, anyone can participate but the requirement/rules states that you’ll need to have at least 20 merits and 100 activities. And with the look of things, you’ve acquired the minimum merit requirement but still need more activities to participate in the quest. So you’re not yet qualified to participate, not until you have 100 activities.

I don’t understand what you’re saying here, if you’re trying to say that folks who run a pruned node don’t need to download and sync the whole blockchain data (which I believe you are) then you’re wrong. Pruning doesn’t mean you don’t have to download the whole 500gb+ data, sure you will, the only difference is that you won’t keep all of the data permanently as the older data would be deleted from your computer while the newer ones are being downloaded. Pruning isn’t for users who are looking for a shortcut or tryna cut corners, it’s simply for those who don’t have enough storage (up to 500gb+) but still wanna run a node. So even if people are using a pruned node to set up their LND, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re doing the wrong thing or they didn’t spend as much internet bundle as those who ran a Full node.

That's actually very natural for anyone who wants to download Bitcoin Core, even if someone who doesn't want to run LN will also experience that.

But did you notice in this thread, notice the title is "LN Quest" not "Bitcoin Core Quest"
I totally understand OP's goal for someone to be encouraged to run LN Quest in full, but what someone who makes an application here does as if it's just like "Bitcoin Core Quest", after successfully running LND and then they stop running after getting 30 Merit, it's very easy isn't it?

In my experience running LN Quest I hardly experienced any errors in step 1 (Sync Node), I instead experienced repeated errors in step 2 (Prepare Thunderhub), even it took me longer to set it up until it finally worked as it should. That suggests that step 2 is more complicated than step 1, and that's why I suggest a shift in the merit distribution.

But it all depends on the OP, because he is the one who has the authority to change it. That's just my advice.

That’s a fair point. Personally, I was supposed to have started the next phase of the quest after completing the first phase, but I’m currently out of town, went to visit my family and I didn’t go with my computer since it’s a desktop, but I’m beginning to the quest as soon as I’m back.

But although I really do not blame the OP for his decision, because even if some would have valid reasons to why they’re yet to attempt the other phases of the quest, some people clearly don’t want to as they’re already satisfied with completing the first phase.

Downloading Bitcoin Core is a very easy process and before now running an LND node was also easier at the beginning, because even if Sync Graph showed False it was still acceptable. But after the rules were updated, it is no longer accepted unless Sync Graph shows True and the node is fully synced. Because of this, it has now become difficult for a fresher user. In many cases, it is seen that after running the node and taking 30 merit, they still do not create a channel. For those who already have knowledge about these things, the matter is quite easy but for people who do not have any knowledge about it, it is really very difficult.

I can see that you completed all the steps very well. I also completed Bitcoin Core properly and ran my LND node, but I have not created a channel yet, though I will do it very soon. Yesterday I checked the guidelines for creating a channel and they looked easy to me. However, it took me several days to finish the first step. After setting up a few peers, my sync graph finally showed true, I believe the second step will not take too much time to complete.

But it all depends on the OP, because he is the one who has the authority to change it. That's just my advice.

From my experience running the LND quest, the second step is more costly and difficult compared to the first step, so I feel the change in merit distribution is quite reasonable. Let us see what kind of update we will finally get from the OP.

You really changed that rule and it's cool, I think from yesterday you thought of that idea.
I see in the new regulations, you really appreciate the real contribution in the LN and I think in the distribution of merit in this new regulation it will not be in vain.

Because no one eats a grain of rice anymore is immediately full, but currently eating a plate is immediately fat. This is just an analogy.
