Social media has exposed so many corruption in some  governments sector, which it would have be hard for people to discover that such thing is happening in those administrations but through social media they have been exposed for the countries to develop. There are some people that make their genuine money through social media by learning crypto trading and other decentralized digital currency that made them to invest money that generate the wealth they are enjoying today.

I have experienced both the good and bad from social media, the good one is that, it hard for scammers to play me these days because I have learned lesson from those people that fall victim to scammers to reduced them to zero level in the society.

I would say most people have a love/hate relationship with social media.

Personally I have a very limited exposure to it in general ATM. I rarely use X and Instagram,
I dont have TikTok and I only use Facebook to connect with groups for some projects
which I have ongoing ATM, when those projects are complete I will no longer be using Facebook.

I have all notifications disabled, If I need to find out something or check something I will log on,
I dont heed a notification for something which is not urgent.

Social media is a blessing to this generation, despite the negativities that also comes from it, most people are getting far more benefits through it. The two most important tools on social media for me are the educative ones being Google and YouTube, you can get almost every information you need on their sites. You can connect directly with family, friends, your community and the whole world through different social media platforms and many people are making money there by creating contents.

Is Google classed as "Social media" or more a search engine?

YouTube I do use, I only take news through YouTube from established news outlets not from
just anybody, everyone has an opinion and I dont succumb to theories and conspiracies and I
dont follow or let "Influencers" affect me.

Honestly I don't really care much about social media news or informations being shared on it, I know that most of it are fake or just made to gain attention.
The negative effects that I've seen on social media is that some people became so gullible, they would believe some shared post instantly without verifying if it is true or not, we shouldn't also avoid the fact that social media eats out most of people's time, spending more time on their social media account rather than their family.

IMO, I think the social media is already balanced.
For everything that exist, there's an advantage and disadvantage to it, and social media is not left out. But one thing I have come to realize is that these platforms go extra mile to keep their users on it for as long as possible, which almost sound like a way of trapping someone addictively. They work with good algorithm that tracks what you like(I.e content that suits you), and keep pouring it to your face, just to keep you as long as possible, which to me is probably one of the highest disadvantage.

But that doesn't mean that we don't have those who get good contents only. In as much as entertainment seem to be the major way to keep a user, there are still few users that have sharp minds, and can dictate what they want on their own.

And as for the aspect of people's opinion, well, everyone can never think the same, so a user has the right to filter what's good and what's bad even though some of these social platforms fails to do it. I can agree to the fact that some people can be very toxic, probably bringing their real life anger and problems to the media, just to make themselves feel better. Well, like some users on this forum would say, "Grow a thick skin". But unfortunately, not everyone has that mental capability to do so.

And as for the question, well, not all news though.
News that sometime concerns me are Crypto related and natural disasters.
Of course, when Bitcoin dumps, you don't expect me to start smiling about it, even though it's still going to recover. And, you also don't expect me to start smiling when I hear people dying from natural disasters that was never their cause.

In my own way it's best if we keep social off from growing children firstly because it easily affect your generations nowadays social media has eaten the brains of young youths in our society by what they see. It makes them want to be like what they see and do what they see on social media. Example how can well train young boy or girl from a godly home start picking up some kind of dirty habit of smoking, funicating, and all other kind of bad habit. Well, I mean belief system that social made was really risky, in my country it was really hard to explain which news or information was true for old people as my parents are. in the last couple of years they used to do a thing with social media as a daily , watched and shared any content without knowing the truth. And yes it was affect me when my friends knew that was shared from them . I need to explaine my parents what they should do every single time before they want to share anything.

Balancing it is not necessary because it would eliminate the initial purpose of social media. The only possible way to balance the positive and negative aspects of social media is by enforcing restrictions. Attempts to restrict social media is an attempt to deprive freedom of speech and expression which go against principles of democracy. Korea for instance where media is restricted and only broadcast what the government is interested in and keep the negative ones hidden doesn't make things balance. Their practice is one sided and doesn't alloww the citizens to enjoy the privilege of social media. Imo, social media should be allowed to operate fully and you are allowed to believe whatever you choose to believe from what you are seeing in the media.

Social media is trashing my mind and memory with useless information. Small portion of information became so addictive, that it is hard to stop scrolling down, because we are already used to receiving new information and content. A wish to find out what is next in search for something interesting kills our ability to focus or memorize things. I have noticed many times, that while scrolling social media, I make marks that "I have to check that for more information", but continue scrolling down, forget about what I wanted to look for more info, and scroll back... And that is all in addition to social media often makes us believe in false information and manipulate our mind.

On the one hand, social media affects people's lives, on the other hand, social media also pushes people's lives towards disaster. This social media has brought the whole world to the people. Without social media, today we would not be able to exchange and know different messages about the news of the whole world. Today, because of this social media, we can easily know all these messages and spread them to people. However, as the way fake news is being created is progressing, if we do not believe fake news and understand it, then we will not have any problem in that case because if we see fake news, it is understood that it is being spread falsely. if you run a survey on your usage of social media and how many hours you spend off it, the average person spends at least 50% of his daily free time on social media and the rest of the time reminiscing on the things he has consumed on the media space. even with a lot of it good side, a lot of us have gotten ourselves addicted to it and rarely talk about it addictive nature because it is what everybody is doing. it can even be safe to say that we are all addicted to social media and that it has affected and ruined physical connectivity to a very large extent.

the false information, propaganda, self disbelieve and undue comparison, ease of access to nudity most especially for the young ones and distraction that comes with it makes it a must to regulate it usage. in some countries, monetization has shifted attention from youth being really creative in positive things to just looking how to get views and get paid via it, the entertainment sector that benefits from social media might be booming in such area but the real sectors that drives life like Engineering and medicine are gradually running loss of interested persons because it is not well projected as a profession that is decent enough to be studied.
