Hi everyone,In just over a decade, we've moved from niche internet money to headlines about ETFs, strategic reserves, and geopolitical debates involving Bitcoin. Countries are discussing adopting BTC as part of their reserves, major funds have exposure, and even old-school investors are taking it seriously. So here's a question:Are we still calling Bitcoin just "digital gold"? Or is it becoming something more — like a global macroeconomic tool? - Is Bitcoin's main role still store of value? - Can it evolve further into a mainstream payment network (with Lightning, etc)? - Will BTC ever be part of the traditional financial system (think 60/40 portfolios)? - Or maybe it's becoming a political asset too? I’d love to hear how everyone sees Bitcoin's role in 2025 and beyond. Is this the beginning of a new chapter — or just a stronger version of what it's always been? P.S. I sometimes publish: 👉 BTC-related thoughts and articles here

Some people are still referring to bitcoin as digital gold and it is acting like it in adoption. Bitcoin is not a global macroeconomic tool. A global macroeconomic tool refers to the strategies and instruments governments and central banks use to influence and stabilize the overall performance of a national economy. These tools aim to manage factors like economic growth, inflation, unemployment, and exchange rates, both domestically and in relation to other countries. Examples of global macroeconomic tools are central bank policies, international trade agreements currency exchange rate policies and many others. Bitcoin is a store of value I do not know if it can evolve further as mainstream payment network but it can be used at anytime at anywhere there is internet which is what that is important. Bitcoin is part of many people's portfolio already Yes it is a political asset already.

Bitcoin is a superior and neutral store of value. That is all it ever has to be IMO. It runs on the most secure and powerful computer network in the world.
Bitcoin doesn't need "smart contracts" or any defi nonsense. Introducing needless complexity will only compromise its security which would attract the horde of hackers and scammers (ie: memecoins, NFTs, staking, rugpulls, etc) like flies to shit. Bitcoin is not ethereum or solana.
Bitcoin can be a payment method, but that is not its primary function. It's simplicity is what makes bitcoin incredibly secure and why millions of people around the world trust it to store their life savings.

Don't you think to go further, BTC would need to adapt and become something that would be used more in the transactions, other than just hodling it all the time?

Do you realize the ability to make payments with bitcoin has existed for over ten years? Even Visa and Mastercard have debit cards that allow you to pay with bitcoin. Governments can accept bitcoin as a store of value, but they may not like to see bitcoin becoming widely adopted as a payment method and competing directly with their own currencies. That can be a potential problem. Gold is never used as a form of payment anymore but is still widely adopted as a store of value.

Bitcoin indeed still is and had the option to be a payment option - however, as for now, it is mainly used for bigger transactions, not the ones that you make daily via fiat. And what would be the endpoint for BTC adoption, in that case? Everybody accepting it as an ultimate store of value? I see more options there As BTC, first and foremost, was intended as an alternative to the traditional systems.

Bitcoin is now more than just an asset, so it's safe to say that a new chapter has already begun. Bitcoin can already be used for payments, and nations are creating reserve Bitcoin funds. It can still be called "digital gold" — decentralization, inflation protection, and other features continue to preserve its core qualities as digital gold.

My biased point of view. Are we still calling Bitcoin just "digital gold"?
Bitcoin is more than been a digital gold since it covers more than gold like scarcity or an hedge during crisis. It is a decentralized payment method and a proof that financial sovereignty is possible. Not excluding it's flaws Or is it becoming something more — like a global macroeconomic tool? Indirectly but it's still Young not to mention has no central head. Is Bitcoin's main role still store of value? Bitcoin is first a decentralized P2P payment method. Store of value is just a side effect of its potential and hedge towards inflation. - Can it evolve further into a mainstream payment network (with Lightning, etc)? Yes. One thing that has never seized in Bitcoin is continuous development to cover it's flaws. No system is perfect. And what would be the endpoint for BTC adoption, in that case? Everybody accepting it as an ultimate store of value?
No endpoint to its adoption is people finally accepting financial freedom. I see more options there As BTC, first and foremost, was intended as an alternative to the traditional systems. And it still is. Can you tell me an alternative to traditional system if it's not Bitcoin? There was gap in the market for those that wanted self custody and Bitcoin was a solution And still is.

Bitcoin is not just "digital gold." It is certainly much more than that. It is a comprehensive global economic system. Bitcoin has changed humanity's view of the traditional financial system that has prevailed for decades.
Yes, Bitcoin's primary role currently is as a store of value, but as we see it, it will soon become a strategic reserve for governments, which means it will become a political asset.
As for payments, we are currently far from Bitcoin becoming a major payment network. However, I am optimistic that it will one day become part of the global financial system, or perhaps even go further, and Bitcoin will become the main global financial system.

For me Bitcoin is digital gold, although surely many people disagree, but from what I get today from Bitcoin is a tool to withstand money inflation in my country and become an asset to add the value of money that I have saved in it, Bitcoin even though it can be considered more than investment assets, but I treat it like gold, which is to save in the long run and be a store of value.

It depends on the way you see bitcoin and make it applicable for your own use, but just as we all have the way bitcoin is made available for use to use, we see it as a profitable digital currency, an investment asset and many other relevant applications for it use, for sure, some believe that bitcoin is the digital gold we have in this modern era, we can see more about how it has been adopted and increases in value, which makes it more of a necessity for use as both a digital asset and investment in the financial economy.

You can consider them as gold, physical gold and digital gold, and as store of value, hedge against inflation, but Bitcoin ourperforms gold since 2009. The ROI chart shows you this fact about gold and Bitcoin performances. https://casebitcoin.com/charts#roi_chartBitcoin has limited supply, gold is not. Bitcoin is fungible, gold is not. Bitcoin is decentralized and it's harder for governments to seize your bitcoin if you store in self-custodial, not on centralized exchanges. Generally Bitcoin has many advantages against Gold.

Whether it's digital gold, currency, global asset, or anything else.
The good thing is, bitcoin is an asset that outperforms almost all of the asset out there, at this point I don't really care about what people are calling bitcoin, because bitcoin is actually really good at all those.
It can be used for remittance, store of value, hedge against inflation, and much much more, you can imagine how versatile it is.
I'm sure in the future it will become mainstream too, we're currently transitioning to cashless society and bitcoin relevancy will sky rocket.

I think Bitcoin can still become store value besides of gold. But in the future, Bitcoin can be used for payment network transactions globally because that needs an agreement from all governments. But now, some countries already use Bitcoin as their strategic reserve and also store of value.
This is the beginning of a new chapter and will stronger than we were before. So Bitcoin for some people will be their digital gold because the value can give them the profit like they invested in gold.

Interesting example of how Bitcoin is superior to gold as a settlement method. VanEck Confirms China and Russia Settling Energy Trades in Bitcoin — A Major Step in De-DollarizationGold is great as a neutral reserve asset, but is very cumbersome to physically store, secure and ship large quantities long distances. That is where Bitcoin comes in; it has the properties of gold as a neutral asset, but you can send it anywhere in the world within minutes. Two of the biggest countries in the world beginning to settle trade in bitcoin? That is huge and signals a future trend for bitcoin nation state adoption.

I don't think it would be used for payments as of now or in the years to come , because it's not suited for that kind of activity. But who knows, maybe eventually we will be there.

1. i'm still calling bitcoin as a digital gold, but others might differ. 2. Bitcoin's main role to be an asset that can save you from the inflation and economic crisis, but not yet proven so far. I can't really say it's good store of value, and rather call it as a speculative asset like stock. my 2 cent 3. Bitcoin is already mainstream payment network and keep growing. It's already happened. 4. You meant a part of institutional investor portfolios? 5. It's hard to say whether it was not a political asset considering Trump got a lot of influence on his election by selling Bitcoin's name.

Are we still calling Bitcoin just "digital gold"? Or is it becoming something more — like a global macroeconomic tool?
Bitcoin is scarce, a store of value, not issued by the government, an hedge against inflation and many more. These qualities are almost thesame with that of actual gold. I still think Bitcoin is a digital gold which will soon evolve into a macroeconomic tool. - Is Bitcoin's main role still store of value? - Can it evolve further into a mainstream payment network (with Lightning, etc)? - Will BTC ever be part of the traditional financial system (think 60/40 portfolios)? - Or maybe it's becoming a political asset too?
- Although Bitcoin's main role was to serve as a means of payment, the obvious truth is that people prefer it more as an investment or asset since its value appreciates.
- Nothing is impossible with Bitcoin, so it can.
- 60/40%?, this i can't really tell
- Using the US government as a case study, i would say yes, it is becoming a political tool.

Who is calling bitcoin just digital gold? It is easy to compare bitcoin to digital gold but it is not digital gold and I am pretty sure a lot of people here in forum certainly do not think that way. To me bitcoin is bitcoin. And I do not think bitcoin will be part of the traditional financial system. It will always be an alternative to fiat no matter how mainstream it gets. This does not imply bad things but rather just things staying the way they are.

Yes you are right with all that and I also know it, we can also see the data from any side indeed Bitcoin is superior therefore considering digital gold is not a bad thing as a claim for Bitcoin. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and we know the disadvantages highlighted are that there is no physical form and has a volatile market nature, but we like it.
