I may not know in other African countries but you see in Nigeria we have lots of gamblers. No joke, the numbers are increasing every single day both in online casinos and in local betting shop.

I can also see United Kingdom, Germany, France and Spain among which are all from Europe. Although, United Kingdom is not part of European Union which is an organization but it is still part of European countries.

About the reason Nigeria is not among, stompix is correct. But people in South Nigeria are gambling if population is used. Many parts of the Norths are Muslims which will make gambling activities to reduce in that part of the country, unlike the South.

I’m interested to see a ranking based on the number of people that gambling per country and what’s their percentage to their country population.

Japan surprised me on this list since I thought Gambling is completely ban on this country while only pachinko is the only gambling allowed.
It’s under the criminal code chapter 23 so I’m not sure why Japan is on the top spot with limited gambling games allowed for them to play.

They have a huge population and a pretty wealthy one, also the pachinko industry is nuts there, it even dwarfs some entire countries GDP.
Also, horse racing, I don't usually bet on Japanese races since the timezone is completely opposite to mine but they have a ton of grade one races and huge volumes on every single bet when a festival is on.

Maybe this is for another different conversation but I wonder but which one drives people to gambling more. Lack of money or abundance of money? There are countries like USA that are doing well as they are visited by tourists because these tourists are wanting to play in casinos and their citizens are doing well enough to gamble. But there are also countries where the citizens are so poor they have no other choice but to rely on luck and hope they get rich through that. Right now it seems like economic prosperity is what drives people to gamble more.

But Italy did not strike me as a country where people specifically visit to gamble in.

Most of the countries listed are big countries honestly speaking, and what surprised me was that I didn't think Australia was included, because most of this country is in the middle class level of life there.

I just have no idea which place in Australia has the most casinos built, because in China it's Macau, and in the US it's Las Vegas that's also the place where gamblers are. So thanks again for this information.

It surprises me that relatively small countries are in the top 10, which means that not only economic power is a factor, but also something strongly cultural.

Being a Spaniard myself seeing my country there doesn't shock me especially, because I know that we have a great tradition of gambling although there are not many famous casinos in here (EuroVegas project failed before even starting), so I think that for many people it can be counterintuitive. Just like a few more in that list, but the most obvious ones are also there, so it must be right.

How could you break records in money spent on gambling with people who have no money? 
Australia is there because they gamble and have huge wages, even if a country would have the same percentage of population gambling when they earn 50 times less how could they compete for that place? Also, let's be a bit real here, all the countries there are G20 countries, counting out China that makes up with popualtion they are also in the top 20 higest wage in the world.

The abundance of money may tempt you to gamble, but if you are poor, you will want to gamble. Even though these two tendencies are opposite, you will continue to pressure yourself to gamble. For example, if you have abundance of wealth, you will go to the casino to enjoy your time and to have fun or earn extra money with your money. The poor tend to earn more in a short time by gambling, and getting money will be considered entertainment for them.

Getting high profits without hard work and in a short time, even getting rich quickly by participating in betting. Everyone has expectations when it comes to winning. Rich people may be able to participate in betting more, but poor gamblers have to set a budget according to their own means and bet. You gave the example of a country like America. If I give the example of a country like Thailand, the citizens of that country are using casinos and various means of betting to earn money from tourists. Even though the people of their country are not in economic prosperity, they themselves are not that addicted to gambling.

I will be surprised if the US and China are not on the list. The world is aware that these two countries have cities with physical casinos and online and offline sports betting platforms, and the Chinese are particularly fond of gambling, as many popular casinos have Chinese owners or partners.

United States are known for gambling, the highest amount of losses comes from the US and it keeps on increasing on a daily basis. Everyone knows that Las Vegas is the center of every gambling activity. This country has more addicts, and I will it's this way because of how easy it is to get money there. Even though people struggle it's not like a third world country that I live where getting a job is a problem.

United States unapologetically also has the highest gambling records alongside owning the large sized slot machines,table games and lucrative casino halls.Checking from gambling data, I've also realized that United States leads in the total gambling revenues.
On the other side,US economy is likely reliant on gambling and gaming industry which is the intriguing force to gamble more and more.

There are many great offline casinos in Sydney and Melbourne. I was in Sydney and visited The Star Sydney Casino.

It is a very good casino, I liked it very much, but the taxi driver told me that there are many big casinos in Sydney, which are even bigger than The Star Sydney Casino (and Australians are incredibly gambling people). Australians save up their money and then check into a hotel next to the casino. Then they play roulette or slot machines for a few days. In the end, they either lose all their money or leave the casino in a brand new, very expensive car.

The rating makes logical but Italy being in the top five is shocking.  I always thought of it more for history and food than gaming.  Given pokies are so common in Australia, I find it not surprising either. Although I would prefer travel for the experience than gambling, if I had to choose anywhere Macau over Vegas.

And with the US gamling industry being nearly $250 billion, that's close to the entire GDP of Nigeria, basically everyone there would need to gamble it's entire wage to come close to those numbers. Nigeria barely has 3 billion in the gambling industry,  it's peanuts compared to the big guys.

That is enough as an explanation. If I see something not correct about it, I would have quoted it in a post.

I am not comparing anything but just an additional information that Northern parts of the country in Nigeria are not gambling like the Southern part.

China has the most gambling addicts in the world. Close to 60 million Chinese are gambling addicts, or 4% of the Chinese population.

Italy's population is 59 million, Australia's 27 million...

The Chinese have almost 20 times more addicted gamblers than the entire population of my country. The US and China have been on the top of this list for years I think, and I doubt that anything will change about that... Both are crazy big countries with so many very rich people.

But I think the list would be different if it showed the number of gamblers and gambling addicts in relation to the population. It is unlikely that such a list exists, and even if it did, I would question its reliability... Many countries do not have such surveys, and even if they do, I doubt that the sample they use is large.

You are right if we look at it from the angle of the cash inflow for these countries because US must definitely beat every other country as they have far more access to capital and various credit facilities. Furthermore,  Per capital income of citizens of these countries are far higher than that of Nigerians and even if Nigeria have more gamblers by head count, they may not be able to measure with the countries listed . In other words, what an average American can bet with will likely be what the average Nigerian may be aiming to win. Therefore, I agree with the rating on the basis of volume.

I didn't say you're not correct, I was just highlighting why these approaches are bad, population or percentages.
Counting the number of people in a country that gamble is not really an indicator of anything, a percentage-wise would be closer, but again, then we have the problem of how much those gamble, cause you have gamblers and gamblers...you mentioned that there is a difference between Northern and Southern Nigeria.

I could see only two statistics that would really make sense:
- the number of addicts percentage wise
- the number of people that make money out of gambling
I doubt anyone could figure out those two without huge errors.

The people in southern Nigeria are more diverse Christians and their gambling population is also increasing with a large population,
but even then, a small income will also have an effect on how much they gamble.

But it's not about religion or anything that affects their lack of interest in gambling,
some people will never think about religion if they want to gamble, just how the regulations are enforced in the country.

In my country, Indonesia is predominantly Muslim with an income that is also not very large,
but there are more gamblers playing in illegal casinos, and even more new casinos are constantly popping up.
