I just came across an interesting article about "Address Poisoning Attack" and I thought it was worth sharing.

These types of scams can definitely be tricky, so it is very important to stay informed to keep our funds safe.

https://cointelegraph.com/news/address-poisoning-attacks-in-crypto

Thank you so much for sharing this kind of scam! It really helps everyone in keeping abreast the attitude whenever we come across suspicious links and scams in this day and age.

Given that scammers have been developing and innovating their methods just to scam people, it is definitely helpful if everyone would share all the possible scam methods that they use so that we can exercise extreme caution whenever we encounter these activities.

The fact that they are now targeting our address makes it scarier for us to transact and make public our address to anyone we transact.
Scammers are smart enough, but we can always outsmart them if we are always updated and kept being informed of its latest tricks that would deceive us and easily fall on their traps. That’s why it pays to be always informed, and by sharing this information will help us not only to be aware but to be prepared as well whenever we’ll face the same kind of scam. Scammers are wise, but we are more than wiser than them.

You are right staying inform will always help us prevent being scammed and those that share information about scammers latest update are really helping a lot of people, I will advise everyone if you come across information about scam activity please try and read it because it can prevent you from getting scammed.
Some time ago someone in my local board shared an incident that happened to him where a trader in Bybit P2P wanted to scam him by sending him money lower than the cost of his USDT and he quickly identified it and the trader had no option but to him his complete money, after reading the story I became more conscious when trading in Bybit P2P and one day that same thing happened to me and I just followed or did Same thing I read in that story and I got my full money so all this information about scam experience always help other people and one needs to always stay updated by reading story's about scam experience.

One of the ways to stay safe from scams like address poisoning attacks is to educate oneself because there are so many people who don't understand this and how it works. One needs to be very conscious of verifying every address before proceeding with the transaction.

This is no longer new information. No need to copy anything from the explorer blockchain. You always need to be careful and use hardware wallets where you can check the sender's address. From viruses on a PC, this is a very good protection.
Aren't hardware wallets exposed too once they're connected to the internet? I'm thinking we can't check sender's address if a wallet isn't connected to the internet, right?

That's why it should be an habit to confirm the words not just the first but mid and last.
That's the way I run through mine too whenever I'm sending to a fresh address. If it's an address I'm used to sending, I just save it on the wallet app with what I will remember it with. So, whenever I'm sending I only need to type the first two letters and everything pops up. It's very convenient for me and I haven't had any issues doing it that way ever. On some occasions my eyes still run through the addresses despite saving them. I'm very paranoid and meticulous when it comes to finances. I'm never in a rush while on it.

It is very important to understand and learn how to work with addresses properly. This will help avoid many mistakes that can be very costly. In the world of digital assets, a moment of carelessness can cost you your entire wallet balance. Phishing addresses are usually designed to exploit human inattention, you copy a wrong address, and suddenly your funds are sent to someone else. That’s why it is crucial to develop a clear and consistent routine for every transaction. Repeatedly verifying addresses, network security, and wallet interface can protect you from silly and, unfortunately, very expensive mistakes.

You are right even though blockchain technology offers high level security but this fraud is different, yes they take advantage of the negligence of the wallet owner and one of the best solutions to avoid this attack is to educate yourself simply we have to double check the address carefully before making a transaction, it's okay to waste quite a lot of time as long as our assets are safe besides avoid copying addresses from transaction history. Although this attack is not new and there have been many topics discussing this, hopefully this topic will be a reminder for us.

I think it has been shared many times, but it's good to have these threads popped for the others to see them at the top list. It's a refresher for those who have no idea what address poisoning attacks are.

These scammers are trying hard, but sadly, there are victims who are not aware of this scam tactic that still terrorize them. Fraudsters will never stop and as long as there are victims falling on this trick.

They're not going to stop from doing this and so, always check your transactions before proceeding.

The address poisoning attack is a really dangerous method of fraud! It infuriates me that hackers are constantly coming up with new ways to cheat. But you shouldn't panic — it's important to be on your guard. Recommend:

- Always check the wallet addresses manually, even if you copied them from a "secure" source.

- Use whitelists and confirmation of transactions.

- Update the software — new versions often protect against such attacks.

Wallet poisoning attack only happen on crypto multi wallets, anyone is free to correct me if I am wrong, I've never seen where fake Bitcoin is been sent to any Bitcoin wallet before, it's always those useless tokens and shit coins.
The software or hardware wallet isn't the main issue here. Poisoning scams usually happen on blockchains that have cheap transaction fees. Those include Polygon, Binance Smart Chain, Ethereum and its L2s, Tron, etc. These networks also allow zero or near-zero transactions. Bitcoin has dust limits and transaction fees are somewhat higher. I guess it's also more difficult and time-consuming to generate vanity addresses that resemble those of the target victims as much as possible.

Those are some of the reasons you don't see this scheme on the Bitcoin blockchain. It's not because of single-coin or multi-coin wallets. The idea is to get the wrong address at the top of the victim's transaction history so they will copy it and send crypto to it.

Aren't hardware wallets exposed too once they're connected to the internet? I'm thinking we can't check sender's address if a wallet isn't connected to the internet, right?
A hardware wallet doesn't need internet connection to generate addresses. Airgapped hardware wallets like Passport, Jade, Seedsigner, etc. work completely offline. The signing takes place offline but the broadcasting of transactions is done via a hot wallet. The software on the internet-connected computer might be affected by a virus but not what is displayed on the screen of your hardware wallet. That's why people verify the information on screen to what the software wallet shows before broadcasting.

We are lucky to be in a forum where we can help ourselves stay ahead. There are investors in Bitcoin who don't have the same opportunity, they are at greater risk of being victims just as newbies.

I just came across an interesting article about "Address Poisoning Attack" and I thought it was worth sharing.

These types of scams can definitely be tricky, so it is very important to stay informed to keep our funds safe.

https://cointelegraph.com/news/address-poisoning-attacks-in-crypto

Note; Address Poisoning attack invole tampering with cryptocurrency address, exploiting human error rather than vulnerabilities in blockchain security.
It is obvious that there is no blockchain weakness. Attackers are just trying to copy or redirect the address to their own address and unfortunately they have stolen the assets of many individual users with this method. The best way to protect yourself from this attack is to send a very small amount to the address you will send to test it in my opinion.

I always do this just to be sure and although I spend a little time and a small fee, I know it is worth it.

I’m most cases, this attack is also similar with the clipboard attack and this attacks are mostly carried out on people who think copying their wallet address from their wallet directly is a waste of time when they can simply just copy it from their clipboard and trust me, it’s always very expensive to copy address from clipboard and taking out just few minutes to copy them from the wallet itself.

I always take out time to appreciate post like this that create awareness about scammers and their always improved techniques and this is a great one and I hope people try to do the right things not to fall victims of those heartless scammers.

That's right, if a person wants to be saved from the scamer, then he needs to be careful.  What I have learned from this forum in the last 3-5 years is a very important part of my life. I have learned how to protect myself from being deceived.

Any scamer can send a variety of documents to cheat, such as email. First, we need to have a complete idea about these phishing messages. Because the number of scammers has been very high in the present. And those who have extra greed and they are the most victimized. Because scamer greedy I see some fund transaction and they send doller and are deceived. So it should always be aware.

The only solution to scams is awareness, which is important for every crypto investor to be exposed to and to be very careful at all times.

Scammers always take advantage of all weaknesses. When we have been vigilant and careful it is a complex issue. Because scammers can always take advantage of situations when we make mistakes. Then we always update ourselves with new knowledge about scams and their methods. So that we can take precautions so that we do not become the next victim.

It is obvious that there is no blockchain weakness.
It's not a weakness but a feature which allows people to send (near) zero-value transactions. That makes poisoning scams cheap to carry out.

Attackers are just trying to copy or redirect the address to their own address and unfortunately they have stolen the assets of many individual users with this method. The best way to protect yourself from this attack is to send a very small amount to the address you will send to test it in my opinion.
There is no need to make test transactions as long as you take the time to verify that the destination address you are sending to is correct. And that's not a difficult thing to do. If you are sending the money to yourself, the address most be part of your wallet and not something you copied from transaction histories or blockchain explorers. If you are sending crypto to someone else, that person sent you their address in some way. Compare that source to what your wallet shows before finalizing the transaction.

Yep. It's a question of adaptation to the situation and not to fall where the others may of fell for it already (if possible, to be prepared and to understand such cases in more detail).

Thanks for sharing because this kind of scam can be very tricky. It involves mistakingly sending funds to a wrong address that looks similar. That's why it is advisable to often change wallet addresses. There is also a need to always crosscheck an address carefully before any transaction.

If we value security and safety of our asset to a very high esteem and as a watch dog, honestly there will never be any room to make any forms of assumptions, most people assume without validation as a result of how long they have been making use of a regular wallet address and ignore the need to always recheck, recking is very essential and not even to be done in a hurry but always in a convenient, we are human with vulnerability of making mistakes at one point or the other, I try as much as possible never to be a victim of such mistake because I know how painful it could be, I had a friend who has made such mistake of sending to an intended wallet address, till date he keeps making references to the mistake and of course I have learnt a lesson from him too he was in a hurry and never had time to recheck.

It's great to learn from others more from your own mistakes, and should be done, ideally, in such a way.

Big or small, experienced or not so much - there is always much to learn to keep your funds safe and sound.

So this is something new:

Address poisoning involves sending small transactions from wallet addresses that closely resemble a legitimate one, tricking users into copying the wrong address when making future transactions.

Trying out to send those wallets that having that almost identical with having that 1-2 digit or just like look the same for the real user will be trying out to copy that recent transaction?
Im surprised that it work considering on how many have been victimized on this, but the main question on my mind is on how the heck will someone copy out the address from history of transactions? rather than on
copying directly with that main address written above?  Huh Huh
This scam is not new and has claimed many victims. The scammers deliberately send fake coins with almost the same address to a random address, these scammers are indeed targeting those who don't want to bother and are careless who only copy the address from the transaction history, the victims consider this more practical even though the risk is very high if you copy the address through the transaction. I have participated in several airdrops and of course I use a new and different address but I am confused to see my new address receiving unclear coins, maybe the method is the same as the victim's experience as told by the OP.

The lesson we can learn from this case is to never take shortcuts in copying addresses through transaction history. It is better to copy your address from your wallet and then save it in notes so that when you want to make a transaction you can copy it from the notes, this method is more practical than copying through the transaction history. Keep in mind that scammers are getting more sophisticated every day, so you need to be careful in securing your assets and must always be vigilant because crypto is very vulnerable to hackers, fraud and so on which can cause us to lose assets.

Current age just implies and does it so people become more and more lazy - and it plays to the hands of said scammers, because who would double check everything? Eventually, people will slip, and that's enough for them (unfortunately).
