Blockstream Green to Become the Blockstream App

I don't think we have a dedicated thread for the Blockstream Green wallet on the forum. Since the company has announced that the software is getting a rebrand to become Blockstream App it's the perfect timing to create one.

Blockstream App is a non-custodial and open-source (so they say) bitcoin wallet that supports on-chain bitcoin, Liquid Network assets, and the Lightning Network. It's currently available for desktop and Android. An iOS app is coming soon.
It allows users to easily create wallets in seconds without backing up their seeds during the setup process. I am not a fan of that option and believe you should test the recovery of your wallet before funding it. But it's there for those who want it.

- Blockstream is partnered with third party exchanges, allowing users to buy and sell bitcoin.
- It's fully integrated and supports Blocksteam Jade and Jade Plus airgapped hardware wallets.
- Supports singlesig and multisig wallets.
- Users can connect through Tor or connect to their own node.

Term "Green" isn't exactly unique, but IMO it sounds better and easier to remember/recognize than term "App". So i find their decision to rebrand is really weird.

I think having 'Green' as part of the name was ok as well. In fact, this wallet has already seen a few rebrands in the past. I am not sure if Blockstream was always the party responsible for it and its development or if they bought the brand at some point. It used to be called GreenAddress wallet. It then became Green Wallet or Blockstream Green as we know it today. And now they are getting rid of the association with 'Green' entirely.

It's been too long since they acquired the brand so I think that move is to emphasize the "Blockstream" brand which is fairly popular IMO than the original "Green" from the old GreenAddress wallet name.

Blockstream has launched a campaign offering refunds in the form of Liquid BTC or Lightning BTC on your Blockstream wallet for any purchase made, up toU$50.

From what I understand, the promotion is only valid for the first 20 videos of up to 1 minute with good framing/lighting.



The conditions are as follows:

- Good lighting and framing as I mentioned (so that the video is clear, I believe).

- Payment in Liquid BTC or LN-BTC, from what I gathered, made from your Blockstream wallet.

- After a valid purchase, film the payment in your Blockstream wallet for up to 1min.

- Tag Blockstream on X when posting the video, saying where you purchased it, and leave your Liquid BTC address to receive the refund.

- If you are among the first 20 videos, you will be refunded.

Important note: I don't know if the limit of 20 videos has already been reached, so you only participate if you want to, at the risk of not being entered into the draw.

Interesting initiative from Blockstream. I am sure they will receive much more than 20 submissions because people can submit them anyway they want to. They didn't provide an X post where the submissions would have to be posted under the comments, for example and everyone would be able to see how many have been shared already. They will get plenty of free mentions and advertising with this campaign and only pay the first/best videos. 

This kind of campaign also pays off for those who like to record videos as they can get something for free. Not counting the work and effort of making the video of course.

Not really. I don't like the idea of having applications just be rebranded to "<Company> App", because it destroys branding number one, and two, because of that, people can no longer infer what the application really does unless they go a Google search to find its purpose.

I would've preferred the old name tbh.

These conditions are more like how to squeeze every last dollar out of $1000. There will be more than 20 videos, most participants will not get anything, activity will increase through payments, and the company will only pay $1000.

I am not a fan of name changes either, but the software was always Blockstream's and had the name of the company as an integral part of the brand. Blockstream Green. The 'Blockstream' part of the brand remains, they just changed 'Green' to 'App' for reasons known to them. Personally, I think 'Green' was way more recognizable.

A bit off topic: Ledger did the same recently with Ledger Live. It's now called 'Ledger Wallet.'

I also agree, I think there was no need to change the names. Besides, the app seems to have become more confusing to use and no longer supports the BIP39 passphrase, at least, I looked and couldn't find it.

I doubt they removed the option of entering a passphrase altogether. It's like cutting off one of your fingers for no reason. It wouldn't make any sense to do something like that because I am sure they have users who appreciate the extra layer of security that passphrases provide. If they changed or updated the user interface, they probably moved the passphrase option somewhere else and you have need to do something differently to activate it.

There is, it's just not intuitive enough to find with the usual fiddling and playing around the options.
So, you're right that it's confusing but their BIP39 passphrase option has been like that.

Reason is; their implementation of BIP39 passphrase works like a "hidden account" in certain hardware wallets.

So, once you've created a (dummy) wallet, close the app or close your wallet.
After opening it again, instead of typing the PIN/fingerprint, click the options menu (dots) and you'll find an option to type your passphrase there.
The wallet instance that's derived with the passphrase isn't persistent and will only show by doing that.
