I'm considering a career in blockchain engineering.

What training options are available?
Too many aspects of career that you can go to in blockchain engineering. What path you like? because there's the developer type and that's the common into this space. And from there, you can easily search the training that's available to your liked path.

Are there courses online that can help me?
There are courses through udemy and coursera[1] that you can take. I've also made a thread about being Certified Bitcoin Professional but that's not really a thing and it only adds a sense of accomplishment once you finish it.

[1] Find the Best Blockchain Course for Your Goals

What basic skills do I need besides mathematical?
Analytical, logical and understanding. But it's best to hear this out from an actual industry practitioner.

How long does it typically take to become proficient as a blockchain developer?
6 months likely as an associate. A year and more to become better and going to senior.

Must I get a computer-based degree?
It helps but maybe there are real practitioners that didn't study computer courses and just did a self study.

YouTube will give you some of the best ideas on how to go about it. Many people there are sharing their stories on how they became blockchain developers and how they will do it in 2025 if they have to do it again. Very useful stuff.

Also, you will need to take some computer-related courses, but you do not need a computer degree. These courses are Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

And it takes some time to become competent in it. It is a patience game, a long one, and you must be willing to commit to it.

The best i could give for now is for you to be determined for what you want and setting goals  in pursuit of the same thing, to have a career in a specific profession is not a bad idea, but we must also know about what is required of us to do in other to achieve our goal in learning, take the online opportunity seriously on platforms like Github and bitcointalk here where you are, there are specific boards like beginner and help and the technical sections where you could learn more about blockchain technology, also form other sources online, articles and so on, if you can give the necessary time and effort, then you could achieve it.

Hey!
1. It depends on whether you have a basic knowledge of engineering. If yes, there are fewer blockchain courses, but they exist. If you are only diving in, it will be easier to find something entry-level. With a decent knowledge of engineering, you may try to apply for different scholarships as well. Or, if there are any online bootcamps in your area.

2. Yep, check Coursera first, but outline the best one. Try to notice which ones offer certificates and which ones do not. In addition, it's always a great thing to start educating yourself via YouTube. I always recommend creating a LinkedIn profile, as many devs use it to share thoughts, present ideas, hire, etc...

3. Programming, blockchain fundamentals (I mean even the super basic things), smart contract development, familiarity with tools, and fields.

4. As I understood, you're only at the beginning of your path. I think at least 6 months to get used to everything. After? All the time. There is always something to learn about.
But if you're already a dev, much less, as you only need to dive into the smart contract development.

5. Nope, it's the best part of working in this field. Of course, it's a plus. But there will be many more steps in your interviews, where exactly only the real skills/knowledge will be evaluated.

Focus on forums; try to collect some kind of base where blockchain developers share thoughts and communicate. There is always something to read here. I often open the dev section and try to answer the questions from the discussion. Just for myself. This way you can test yourself. Good luck!

P.S. I can already see many sources, which Bitcointalk users shared here. It's great.

Maybe you can try to follow a course on blockchain engineering, and you can search for the course offline and online, I don't know which country you are from, but like in my country there is a community that provides courses for that learning. Maybe the first thing you should do is find out what the roadmap is for you to learn, I found that there was a content creator who told the roadmap to becoming a Blockchain engineer or Blockchain developer, and you try to see here: Youtube - From Zero to Blockchain Developer in 10 Months: Complete Roadmap

Why not start with the DIY guides in different languages? Then understand how it works.

I have a good source where to start. Check this one: DIY Build Your Own Blockchain

Don't forget to scroll down for free books and other sources to learn more about blockchain. It's old source and was updated 2 years ago but all source are powerful to learn blockchain.

BTC is still bearish at the moment, but it is getting weak. The market might shift while the RSI is making a reversal pattern.

What basic skills do I need besides mathematical?

A proficient computer base user with the ability to solve complex issues and enhance networking peripherals using those mathematical terms in the logic. And also be a good researcher.

Jeeeesus f****ing christ. Really? You're looking into blockchain development and are asking these kind of questions. LoL
Man, i'm just so dumbfounded by this that i can't come to my sences. You sound like you've done literaly no research whatsover.
This forum is not meant for stupid questions (granted, there are soooo many) but to supplement some existing knowledge with experience of others in the same field

Must I get a computer-based degree?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you want to be officially recognized then go to school. Many universities have opened official education about blockchain. I think you will get knowledge that supports your life plan. Maybe you can open this link: https://www.id.educations.com/blockchain/di-kampus. There are several lists of schools related to the question you wrote. If you want to be self-taught, there are many social media that make knowledge about blockchain. But this self-taught ability you will not have official information. Only work that you can show to convince others.

It's good you asked the question on the forum, but you would get more details if you had done a search on Google and other search engines. I saw some universities that offer related blockchain engineering and other related courses. Princeton University, the University of Buffalo,  Northeastern University, and others offer such courses.

Almost all skills or courses can be done online.

Having a good background in mathematics will be an advantage, but you don't necessarily need to be a guru in maths.

The duration of the course will be based on the institution you choose and the type of certificate you want to acquire at the end of the programme.  A BSc would take more time than a certificate course
