University degree is still worth a lot in our time despite the fact that one need to go beyond a degree to be productive and competitive in thus tech age. The conventional job system still adore university degree as the gateway to your dreams. In other words, you need the degree to be eligible to showcase what you can offer. It's only in some instances and specialised types of jobs that they look at your relevant skills and not the degrees.

Is university still worth it today? Are “extra skills” and certificates just another money-making trick? Has anyone here found success without a degree, or by learning something new outside of school? Is this the start of a new way of working, or just a big mess?

Yes, university degree seems like what does not worth it nowadays if we look at the rate of graduates who are unemployed. However, if we look at the other side, despite the high rate of unemployment in almost every country with degree, there are still professionals where are high demand, especially in fields like healthcare.

It used to be very hard for someone to study medicine and surgery, nursing, dentistry, and so on. Now without no job opportunity for them unless them don't want to take the offer base salary skale or something. there are also graduates in fields computer science like programmers and cybersecurity. The fact is that even skill aspect it depends on types of skill someone learn. If someone chooses to learn a skill that is not in high demand, they may struggle to find a job.One thing about education is that it helps to develop a higher level of thinking, which often sets educated individuals apart from those who haven’t had that experience, like those who didn’t attend university.

I was without a degree until my 40s. When I eventually took one, did really well but discovered it is really more about effort than brains or anything else. And I suppose, a bit of a test of how far you're willing to go (using the rigours of scientific methods to approach a subject, for example). Which are all quite useful things to excel at a job.

Then again, I did my jobs without all that, while degree holder colleagues weren't particularly any better or more willing. It's not a dealbreaker for me at all when I'm hiring, but I daresay the Bitcoin devs were all highly educated...

Meanwhile, graduates are stuck with debt and stress. Many young people feel lost, frustrated, and even angry, like society promised them something it can’t deliver. In the past, too many frustrated young people has led to big changes. Sometimes for the better, sometimes not. Do you think the old way of working (one job, one company, climbing step by step) is over? Now, I see many young people having several jobs, working on short projects, or even starting small businesses on the side. In a recent report, more than half of workers noticed more people working two or more jobs
The world is increasingly developing with the process of creating technology so that anyone has the opportunity to work in any sector and now there are many young people who can make money just by sitting at home holding a computer. Some people think it is more comfortable to work in an office because they can earn money every month with a certain capacity and generally people like this do not like to take challenges in life. Some others try their luck by building a small-scale business first and they struggle to make the business grow more so that it becomes bigger slowly.

There are many types of people in this world, some like challenges and prefer to struggle to develop a business or investment. Others hope to work in an office with a standard salary every month and they will fight to get promoted so that their salary is bigger. But people's awareness to grow their finances to be better will be realized if they have a far-sighted view in any way available today.

Is university still worth it today? Are “extra skills” and certificates just another money-making trick? Has anyone here found success without a degree, or by learning something new outside of school? Is this the start of a new way of working, or just a big mess?
I have a bachelor's degree but I don't work according to the knowledge I got in college. If asked whether education is important, the answer is important but does not determine a person's steps to success in making money. On the contrary, skills can make someone achieve financial freedom better than most graduates. How do you use technology to make money and vice versa the opportunities that everyone has.

Sorry guys, too many replies and I cannot answer everything  Embarrassed

Depends. Healthcare is always high in demand. Dentists, nurses, medical doctors will have no problems with getting a job no matter what happens. Even AI cannot take their jobs away.

The others? They seem dead unless you highly specialize in a field but then you need to be able to sustain yourself till you reach that stage and that’s why it seems it is not worth the wait.

If you ever want to get a job just because you finished college, go get a license that’s related to healthcare. Otherwise get ready to work way way harder just to land on a job.
Healthcare jobs are perceived by people as "future-proof" due to the increase in population and aging. Not many AI or robots will be fixing your teeth or drawing your blood in the near future! So for a lot of families, healthcare is the safe bet

However, I question even within the healthcare industry, are all the jobs as safe as we believe? I have friends who are pharmacists or medical lab techs and they are still afraid of automation or hospital budget cuts. And, medical school or nursing programs are super competitive and costly to enter. It takes years and a great deal of money to get in. What happens to those who do not make it?

Not all people can afford to grind through years of training, unpaid internships, or loans. That is what is so difficult to people in other professions. They end up in a kind of limbo, feeling left behind because the rules changed so fast

Depends on where you live.

If the jobs vacancy require degree, pretty sure university degree is important.

If you live in a country who choose experience over degree and other theory thing, university degree isn't important anymore.

Many people that I met usually say this to me "the most important thing of school is you can make friends and relationship, they will help you in the future". So, I think university is important for the social benefit than the thing you learn since you can learn in work.
The rules to get a job differs everywhere. In some places, they will look at your degree first regardless of the skills you possess. In other places, it is all what you can do or who you know. Ihear more and more people say that the network is what university is really all about, not the classes. It is insane how a person you met in school can assist you in getting a job five years down the line. Sometimes it feels like “who you know” is half the battle, maybe more

But do not you think it is a bit unfair? Those who cannot afford university (or have to work constantly) do not have those connections, and are therefore always trying to catch up? I am curious whether there is a possibility to obtain the same social capital at a not insane price. And at certain locations, the social side is nearly turning into the only reason to go. Does that mean that the real education system is failing? Or maybe it just means we need to rethink what university is for

Usually in my country there is a common slogans that keeps spreading around that "School is a scam", I must say the truth, university degree aren't scam and sincerely they are worth it. Why because school today are one way of giving people formal education which involves all part of our life, and of course not everyone who must work in a white scholar job rather some people over there are meant to be an employer of Labor.

Meaning after graduation they can become self employed and also keep employing other people to work under them than entirely depending on government or company around their country, yes those companies are being owned by graduate who gained university degree from all part of the school around the world and they now became established and owned companies around the world.

So, to me it's always better for every graduate to acquire special skills for themselves as most of the companies do ask of working experience over the years and if they weren't able to provide it then it's assumed that they aren't suitable for that task, hence there should be a formal skill acquired before seeking for an employment.
There’s always that slot talk online. But like you said, it is not the full picture. Formal education still opens a lot of doors, especially for people who want to build something bigger or start their own business. Many founders and company owners around the world actually do have degrees, and a lot of what they learned (about discipline, teamwork, or just sticking through a tough curriculum) translates to real life and work

And yes, not everyone needing a “white-collar” job. University can give you a foundation to become an employer, not just an employee. I think people sometimes forget that. In fact, in tough economies, many grads create their own jobs out of necessity by turning side skills into real businesses

Yes it must be admitted that this is a very necessary thing and if we cannot achieve it by studying, then our studies will be meaningless. It depends on our life, who we are studying and how successful we want to be. That is why the reason for study is becoming more and more in every era. Our teacher has taught us that if we do not have a degree, we will not be capable of anything. This is true to some extent because many people prefer jobs which is why this is complete true. For this our hard work tells us how well we have studied and obtained a degree.

It is worth it, because people aren't supposed to attend to an university only for money making reasons. It's a long lasting process of about 4-5 years which will guarantee access to new knowledges and learnships, which can be a life changer, as there is potential to open your horizons to new ideas, concepts and goals. However, if the individual's interest is just a certificate, so he can make money later somehow, I guess he is adopting the wrong approach towards university.

When there isn't a genuine interest for learning and discovering new things, then there is a concerning scenario ahead, as what is the meaning of life for this person, then? Young generation is lost and frustrated because of that. They don't want to work or to learn. They just want to access the pleasures of life, as if they were simply entitled to, because that is what they have been hearing from the media, family and government since childhood.

In reality, however, that is not how things work.

A university degree is definitely necessary. Without a university degree, you cannot do the highest jobs in your country. You must be qualified for the highest-level jobs and hold a university degree. If you do not have a university degree, no matter how talented and experienced you are, it will be of no use. You must be experienced a university degree is required.

In the modern world's rapid progress, many people argue that a university degree is no longer necessary. Now, many people are earning a high amount of money without a university degree, but this is not entirely accurate. You must be educated, stand tall in front of society, and work for the country and the nation by continually educating yourself. In some cases, they do not consider your educational qualifications, but rather your experience, and assess whether you can perform the job efficiently.

Despite many people said university is useless, don't hear them.

If you're young or have no prospect about your career, better to get a degree. If you know what you should do next or you have a good business inherited by your parent, it's okay if you don't want to school.

What I know, most people regret for not school, while less people regret for school.

Has anyone else noticed that these days, having a university degree does not seem to guarantee a good job anymore? In the US, more than 40% of new graduates are working in jobs that don’t even need a degree! In the UK and Canada, youth unemployment is even higher, and entry-level jobs are much harder to get. Now, for each job, there are more than 100 people applying

A lot of people blame technology (especially AI, robots and automation) for stealing jobs. But the truth is more complicated. Companies are using AI to get rid of simple tasks, yes, but they’re also sending jobs to cheaper countries. And when there are jobs, many companies do not care about your university name anymore. They want to see if you really have the skills or special training for that job. That means people have to pay even more to get extra “certificates” after graduating

Even how bad you would be ending up on being unemployed after finishing college but still it would be that recommended that you should be that finishing up college or having a degree because this would be your primary approach or thing that you would do at the time that you would be finishing it out on which you would be finding to land a job after you have finished it out on which we know that it would never been that so simple. Yes, there are tons of new graduates that havent been able to get a job after than but it doesnt mean that you shouldnt be finishing up your studies just because you have seen someone who do become succesful despite on having not be able to finish it out. We do know that there are different factors on which it would be affecting overall success on which simply means that you cant be able to rely with it alone and assuming that you would be able to achieve or commit on the same thing. You should be still that thriving to finish up college because just like been said that nothing beats out if you do have that a degree on which it isnt talking about job opportunity chances but also you do have that knowledge and skills on which other people who doesnt been able fo finish up but actually it all matters or depends on how you would be handling yourself.

There's something I will like everyone to understand which is university degree will never determine your success or you being successful, you can use your university degree and get a job but in other to advance your self you need person skills and determination, this days now companies even prefer to employ people with skill than people with just university degree, but that those not mean companies don't employ people with university degree they do but having a university degree and skill will give you more advantage in being successful and getting a good job.
We can't say university degree those not worth anything it do, without university degree there are some level in politics and companies you won't reach, the knowledge you get from university is still very much needed for you to function very well in the society, so university degree is very important, but having a university degree is not a grantee that you will succeed in life, so it is important that as you are going to the university to get the degree you also try as much as possible to get a skill.

While the number of university graduates is rapidly increasing, qualified job opportunities are not growing at the same rate. Graduates are not preferred because they are not qualified, they have difficulty finding jobs, this is the case in our country and in the world. Artificial intelligence and automation are reducing routine work while increasing the demand for creative and technical skills.

This also questions the value of university education when it is not supported by practical skills. Although the value of a university degree in Turkey and the world has decreased compared to the past, it is not completely worthless. The value depends on which university and department you graduate from and how you develop yourself.

Regardless of the unemployment level that keeps growing in different countries, university degree really means a lot in our society today. Perhaps the degree is not just an empty sheet of paper, people are the evidence of that degree and what ever degree a person has, you  can not compare to someone else's that doesn't have a degree because the level of wisdom and knowledge you will possess can never be the same with someone that didn't attend university. Even as a graduate, you decide to run a business or become and entrepreneur, you level of performance might never be the same with an illiterate.

Once more, there's always hope of a better job for a degree holder, even if the person is not yet sure of the job, it's better to be prepared while waiting for an opportunity than waiting for the opportunity to come before you start preparing. Acquiring a degree doesn't take a day or two, in my country it takes about 2-6 years depending on the course, meanwhile an opportunity can just come u today and pass you by when you are not prepared.

Is university still worth it today? Are “extra skills” and certificates just another money-making trick? Has anyone here found success without a degree, or by learning something new outside of school? Is this the start of a new way of working, or just a big mess?
What do you want to become? You can't become a doctor without a medical degree, so you need a university degree to get a license to work as a doctor. I think that one of the biggest waste of time is getting a business degree when you are not from a rich family or when you don't know the right people because I know many people in my university who were getting A degrees and some of them work in Dunkin Donats, KFC, Supermarkets and etc while I used the moment and decided to pursue career in UI/UX design and earn more than them. My parents were always telling me that I am nothing without a degree but I have a degree which I don't use and work as an UI/UX designer, where I got without a degree and earn way more than 90% of employees.

The world of technology is moving forward and it is unstoppable. Some jobs have shifted to robots or AI especially in certain areas - but this is not the reason why we actually find a lot of unemployment. The scarcity of job vacancies is one of the reasons why there is a lot of unemployment in developed countries - while the regeneration of workers or employees is not too much. Some graduates from certain degrees are no longer needed much - even in today's job world, skills and experience are more important than degrees.

Many people certainly complain about the difficulty of finding a job. Companies and governments do not open many job openings for the degrees they have - even if there are, the competition between job seekers is very disproportionate. If in developed countries we see 1:100 - then imagine that in third world countries.

I never thought that a degree guaranteed a job. In the past, it may have been a requirement. Today, the reality is completely different. The old manual no longer applies. Wherever there is demand, there will be jobs. There are many open positions and few qualified people to fill them.

There are professions in which a degree is essential and even mandatory, such as doctors and lawyers. In others, knowledge and proven experience in the field may be enough. It depends a lot on the culture of the company that wants to hire you. For some, a degree and diploma are important, for others, they are not.

Depends in the country where you live and the branch. I got a bachelor's degree more than ten years ago, but so far it has been worthless for me as I'm a developer. In my company, they care about the knowledge and the work experience I have, not my degree.
For example, if you are a doctor, your degree is important and basically you can't do anything without a degree from a university.
Still, I think work experience matters more than a degree.

A university degree is still worth it in my estimation. A university education teaches one how to think, make sense of the world, know social rules and have write well. There just many things that still makes a university degree worth it. The skills my not be taught in the university but a university degree teaches one how to go about getting that extra skill. It is the foundation that follows every other great thing which a person does.

For me, a university degree has always been an essential thing for a lifetime. Although a lot of earning opportunities have been coming in the market, but when it comes to stability and sustainability of earning potentials, there’s always a bigger advantage if you have completed your college degree.

If you're young or have no prospect about your career, better to get a degree. If you know what you should do next or you have a good business inherited by your parent, it's okay if you don't want to school.

Yes, if you do not have a good business and a good income sector inherited from your parents, then it is better to move forward with your education. Many people offer various kinds of advice, but education comes at a price and will continue to do so in the future. Universities are providing excellent education and are committed to developing the right individuals for the country and the nation. For this, I think a university degree is necessary. Without a university degree, you will not be able to achieve much.

Therefore, if you wish to develop yourself, a university degree is definitely necessary. If you have a university degree and study diligently, you will not have to rely on inheriting anything from your parents. You can achieve something worthwhile by utilizing your university degree and talents.
